Instructions for Death Template:

Please review the general transcription rules at
< http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/$Transcription.html >,
especially sections I.1, I.2, II and IV.

Instructions for deaths generally follow those for births.

* Microfilm # -

The microfilm number from LDS Family History Library,
a seven-digit number.
If the records have not been microfilmed, write "Not microfilmed" in this cell.

* Microfilm Item # -

The microfilm item number on the microfilm.
There are typically about a dozen items on each microfilm reel.
If these records have not been microfilmed, leave this cell blank.

* Frame # -

The "Frame Number" is an image number on a CD.
This number is written in the upper left of each image on the CD,
using black-on-white numbers, appended to the microfilm number, with leading zeros.
Transcribe this number without the leading zeros.

The "Frame Number" is not displayed in the final database;
it is for internal use only, and can be useful during the translation process.
If these records have not been microfilmed, leave this cell blank.

* Image # -

This is the number above the record on the LDS microfilm.
Some newer microfilmed records have this number; older records do not.
This number is written centered above the microfilmed page,
using a white-on-black digital font.

If there is no digital image number, you can use the Page Number written
in the original record.

This number can be helpful to the researcher, so that they can
go directly to the correct page or image on the microfilm.
If these numbers are missing, leave this cell blank.

* Place Recorded -

The town where the death record was written.
This will be the same town for every record in a particular book.
This town name is almost always on the title page(s) of the record book.

* Year Recorded -

The year that the death was registered.
This can be different from the year of death.
For example, deaths occurring in late December
might be recorded in January of the following year, etc.

This year should be taken either from a title page of the
registration book, or as mentioned on the separate pages at
the beginning of each year's section.

* Record # -

The record number of the death in the original books.
In the original books, there are two columns on each page:
one for males and one for females. The deaths are numbered
sequentially each year; one numerical sequence for males,
and a separate sequence for females.

The translator should copy this number, preceding it with
the letter "M" for males or the letter "F" for females.
For example: "M1", "F1", "F2", "F3", "M2", M3", "F4", etc.

This data will enable users looking for the original record
on the microfilm to locate the correct record.

* Surname -

The surname (last name, family name) of the deceased.

All surnames should be written in all CAPITAL LETTERS.
(Other proper names in other columns, such as given names and town names,
should have initial capital letters only).

If this record has no surname (i.e. patronymics only), then indicate this with
a dash ("-") character, rather than leaving the field blank or using any other indicator.

The name on the Russian side of the record might be
different from the name on the Hebrew side. If that is
the case, then write both names -- separated by spaces
and a slash, e.g. "KAGANSKI / KOHEN".

Transliteration guides for Russian (Cyrillic letters) into English (Latin letters)
can be found at: < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanization_of_Russian >, especially
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanization_of_Russian#Conventional_transcription_of_Russian_names
See the notes regarding missing/illegible data at
< http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/$Transcription.html#II >.

* Given Name -

The first name(s) of the deceased.

If the name on the Hebrew side of the record is different
from the name on the Russian side, they should both be written,
separated by a slash, e.g. "Yankel / Yaakov".

See the notes regarding missing/illegible data at
< http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/$Transcription.html#II >.

* Father -

The deceased's father's name(s).

If the name on the Hebrew side of the record is different than
the name on the Russian side, they should both be written,
as specified above under "Given Name".

Usually, only the father's Given Name(s) are included in the death record.
However, if the father's surname is included (and is different from the deceased's
surname, as in the case of a married woman), then the father's surname should
be included here, in all capital letters, and should also be added to the
"Other Surnames" column (see below).
If the father's patronymic (the deceased's paternal grandfather's given name)
is included, then that data should also be included in this column -- in the format
"Y Xovich" (Russian), or "Y ben X" (Hebrew), or "Y sin X" (Romanian), etc.

See the notes regarding missing/illegible data at
< http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/$Transcription.html#II >.

* Mother -

The deceased's mother's first name(s).

Similar instructions as for "Father's Given Name", above.

* Mother's Maiden Name -

The surname should be written in all CAPITAL LETTERS.

If the mother's maiden surname is not present in the record,
put a dash "-" in this cell.

See the notes regarding Hebrew/Russian differences
and missing/illegible data, under "Given Name", above.

* Spouse -

The deceased's spouse's first name(s).

If the name on the Hebrew side of the record is different
from the name on the Russian side, they should both be written,
as specified above under "Given Name".

If the spouse's patronymic (the deceased's father-in-law's given name)
is included, then that data should also be included in this column --
in the format "Y Xovich" or "Y Xovna" (Russian), or "Y ben X" or "Y bat X"
(Hebrew), or "Y sin X" (Romanian), etc.

See the notes regarding missing/illegible data at
< http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/$Transcription.html#II >.

* Spouse's Surname -

The surname (last name, family name) of the spouse of the deceased.

All surnames should be written in all CAPITAL LETTERS.
(Other proper names in other columns, such as given names and town names,
should have initial capital letters only).

The name on the Russian side of the record might be
different from the name on the Hebrew side. If that is
the case, then write both names -- separated by spaces
and a slash, e.g. "KAGANSKI / KOHEN".

Transliteration guides for Russian (Cyrillic letters) into English (Latin letters)
can be found at: < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanization_of_Russian >, especially
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanization_of_Russian#Conventional_transcription_of_Russian_names

See the notes regarding missing/illegible data at
< http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/$Transcription.html#II >.

* Cause of Death -

List the cause of death and any comments about the death,
which are indicated in the original record.

* Age

Age of the deceased. This could be in days, weeks, months, years, or other units.
List exactly as is written in the original record. The default is years.
* Date of Death -

In the Czarist format vital records, dates are recorded in
both the Julian calendar (used by the Russian) and the
Hebrew calendar (used by the Jews).
Transcribe both dates, from either side of the record.

For the Julian date, transcribe the Day / Month / Year
each in separate fields.

For the Hebrew date, record the month and day in one field.
The names of the Hebrew months can be transliterated
directly (the spelling can vary).

* Town of Death -

The place of death, as indicated in each death record.
This is often the same place as the "Place Recorded"
(the town where the record book was written), but sometimes
a record book contains the deaths for more than one town.

Transliterate place names as accurately as possible --
Write the town name as it is written in the original record,
NOT a modern native name. The modern native name can
be written after the transliterated name, in square brackets --
See standard transcription rule I.2.b.:
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/$Transcription.html#I.2

* District -

The "uyezd" -- the district name of the place of death.

Some towns are mentioned without uyezd. In this case, the coordinator
should try to fill it in, using map references or other sources.
If the uyezd is not mentioned or cannot be determined, write a dash ("-").

* Gubernia -

The Guberniya (Russian province name) of the place of death.
The name of the bubernia is usually mentioned on the title pages
of the original record books.
(Title pages are on separate frames but they are not included
in the translation; they should be checked for reference only).

* Place of Residence -

The town where the deceased resided or was registered.
This can be a different town from the "Place Recorded" and "Place of Death".

* Other Towns -

The "Other Towns" column is a special hidden (non-displayed)
field, which is used only for database indexing purposes.

The towns in this column should be extracted from the
"Comments" column, if there are towns mentioned in that column
which are different from any of the towns in the "Place Recorded",
"Town of Death" and "Place of Residence" columns.

The places mentioned in the "Comments" column might be concerning
the deceased's title (meschanin or merchant), or a spouse's or parent's
or child's profession or place of registration/residence.

For more information on the "Other Towns" column, see:
< http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/$Transcription.html#V >.

* Other Surnames -

The "Other Surnames" column is a special hidden (non-displayed)
field, which is used only for database indexing purposes.

The surnames in this column should be extracted from the
"Comments" and "Father" column, if there are any surnames mentioned
in those columns which are different from the surnames in the
"Deceased's Surname", "Mother's Maiden Surname" and "Spouse's Surname".

The surnames mentioned in the "Comments" or "Father" column might be
the deceased's father's surname (i.e. the maiden surname of a married woman),
or the surname of a child or witness.

For more information on the "Other Surnames" column, see:
< http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/$Transcription.html#V >.

* Comments -

All other information which doesn't fit into any other column.

Information which may recorded might include:
 - Profession / title (mostly found on the Hebrew pages).
 - Information concerning the deceased, such as twins.
 - Any notes written in the original records concerning either
      parents or a deceased name changes. (This could have been done
      in several years after registration and is often written above
      the record).
 - If deceased is a soldier, notes about the soldier's regiment,
      notes concerning the deceased's status, etc.
- Translator's notes or observations. These should be placed in
   square brackets [ ], since they don't appear in the original record.
- Some death records will have other information written in Romanian
   on the left side during the time that Bessarabia was under Romanian rule.

* Archive/Fond -

The source of this record. The name of the archive can be abbreviated
(e.g. "NARM" for the National Archive of the Republic of Moldova),
together with the Fond / List / Item numbers provided by LDS with CD,
or other archival source.

* Image Pathname -

If a digital image of the record is available, enter the filename of the appropriate image
here.
Images should be in either .gif or .jpg formats only. If no image is available, leave this field blank.
If the image is already on the web, a URL may be entered here.

The characters used for the filenames should consist of only the 26 letters of the alphabet,
the ten digits, and the underscore character; do not use spaces, parentheses, commas,
or any other unusual characters.
