Math Problem Solving Journal
The purpose of the Problem Solving Journal is to promote higher
order thinking skills by solving word problems and explaining the
thought processes behind getting the “right” answer. The students will
take home the Journal one night a week and return it the next day with
the problem completed. Only one problem a week will be assigned. Your
child has been assigned one of the following: Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday, or Thursday. The left page will contain a word problem
pasted on the page. The space at the bottom of the left page should be
left blank for Teacher Comments and a Score. The right page is for the
student to solve the problem and explain how they got their answer. It
is very important for them to explain fully in complete sentences how
the answer was derived. Their responses will be scored based on the
rubric listed
below. Students Categories Problem Possible

their Journal because it is intended to be a tool for learning. All
work should be in the students’ own words and handwriting.
