       Grant Number 79-124
PROVENANCE:

The genealogical information was compiled primarily from family bibles and other family records
by various founders of the Staten Island Institute, notably Charles Leng, Edward C. Delavan and
Mabel Abbott. Leng and Delavan compiled the information between 1900-1925, and Abbott
researched the material in the 1930’s and 1940’s. The material in the collection has been
consistently kept as genealogical information in the files of the Institute.

Note: the genealogies prepared by Mabel Abbott were taken from the Institute’s collection of
family bibles. After the families’ records were transcribed, the bibles were given to the Staten
Island Historical Society.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

The genealogy collection consists of material relating to the genealogy of Staten Island families.
The inclusive dates with which the papers deal are 495AD-1970, with the majority of the material
dealing with the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries.

ARRANGEMENT:

The collection is arranged alphabetically by major family name. Parentheses surrounding inclusive
dates denote the dates to which the documents refer. Many papers are handwritten copies of
family records. Dates without parentheses refer to the dates on which the papers were written or
published. The collection consists of two cubic feet and is open.

In spring 1981, this collection was indexed by family name as well as under the genealogy heading
in the finding aid to the Special Collections, housed in room 9.

RELATED MATERIAL:

Genealogies incorporated in other collections have been cross referenced by an “IAM” sheet. For
material relating to genealogies in other collections, consult Staten Island Families, 70.Sif and
Staten Island Wills, 80.Wila. A finding aid to be compiled in the future will be a comprehensive and
complete reference index related to the genealogical series.
