Utilization Policies for GSEHD’s Newly Redesigned ISC/RL (6/18/09) Instructional Services Center Preamble The primary purpose of the ISC is to provide a center for faculty to explore, be exposed to, and integrate technology into the GSEHD student and research experience. The lab will be used primarily as a classroom and for special meetings and events that require use of technology specific to the ISC. With a twenty (20) seat capacity, the lab can now host and support a variety of technology based activities such as video conferencing, educational training, comprehensive exams, research seminars, faculty search presentations, guest lecturers/ presentations, student presentations, and technology training sessions (such as CPAS). If the lab is not in use, faculty and adjunct faculty are welcome to use the ISC after obtaining access from a member of the technology services team. Due to security concerns and undetermined demand and use patterns for the newly technological enhanced lab, the lab is not targeted for general walk in use by students at this time. We will track use patterns during the Fall (2009) semester to determine if open lab hours are feasible. Students have short time designated access to two computer stations in the front lobby of 2134 G Street. An open computer lab is available for students at the following location and access hours: Gelman Library: Basement location. 24 hours a week access to computer lab. ‘Access requires G1 account; this account can be set up voluntarily at the computer lab by the student. A G1 account is simply an Academic Technologies (proprietors of the computer Lab) account which is linked to your e-mail and your GWID. These will be necessary to create your account’. ISC Access Policy Although the lab will be open to GSEHD faculty, adjunct professors, and research staff members during the day from 9:30 am – 4:30 PM for both walk-ins and reservations, individuals who would like to use the lab will need to obtain an access code from one of the Systems Specialists listed below. If a Professor or staff member has reserved the lab, they must bring their e-mail confirmation to the Receptionist (if the Receptionist is unavailable see one of the Systems Specialists in Room 102 or B10) to gain access to the lab. Reservations created using the Online System by Professors or Staff members supersede walk-in requests to utilize technology in the lab. Systems Specialist for Technology Services – Erik Johnson, 202.994.3607, erikj@gwu.edu Systems Specialist for Instructional Services – Leslie Ward, 202.994.4834, ljward@gwu.edu Systems Specialist for Web Services – David Taylor, 202.994.4831, djtaylor@gwu.edu Interested users should check the reservation status of the room PRIOR to submitting a room reservation. Room reservations can be viewed online at http://www.gwu.edu/~gsehdtec/Calendar or on the daily sheet of room reservations posted in the front lobby of GSEHD. To reserve the lab for a single event, you must submit a request using the GSEHD room reservation system. On-line requests will be approved by the Systems Specialist’s for Instructional Services or Technology Services. To reserve the ISC Lab for a semester long class, you must complete an ISC Class reservation form which requests rationale for hosting the class in the ISC Lab rather than using an alternate classroom or technology lab on campus. As a prerequisite to using the ISC faculty and staff will be required to participate in an orientation. Users have several options available: video demonstration, online instruction, or face to face orientation. Each department is responsible for coordinating orientation to the ISC with Systems Specialist Technology Services. ISC Printing Policy Computers in the lab will be set up to print to the Xerox printer in the basement. Faculty, adjunct faculty, staff, & RA/ GA’s will require a copy code from their department /program to print. All print jobs generated from the ISC should be picked up in the basement, Room B18. Since multiple users print to this device a cover page with the users name will print. Users are encouraged to email or save files that they would like to print on the network drive or a flash drive. If a user requires a flash drive they are available in room 102 (or at receptionist) for $15. Due to accounting issues for the XEROX machines, students will be required to print independently, unless they have acquired a printing code from a Faculty member. If a faculty member feels it is necessary to allow a student to print a document by the process described above, they should insert – not share their printing code and will assume the responsibility and cost of the student’s print job. ISC Usage Policy (Room 101) Users of the lab are required to observe the following rules and regulations: No food, drinks, cell phone discussions or excessive talking will be allowed in the lab. Please place phones in Vibrate or Silent mode. Installation of Third Party software without prior approval by the Technology Services Systems Specialist is not permitted. All items/ documents saved to the desktop or the hard drive will be erased. We encourage the use of flash drives to save your data after your session is complete. Access and use of the Sympodium system must be preceded by Mandatory Orientation. The user is responsible for any damage to any equipment located within the Instructional Services center. Printing is available only to those users that have been assigned a XEROX accounting ID. The print jobs will be pooled in the Basement Printer room at B18. All users are responsible for making sure that all windows are closed, the lights are turned off and the keypad secured door is closed prior to leaving. The new computer does not require that each machine is shut down, but users are asked to log off of the machine when they are finished. If there is a group using the lab, the receptionist will remind the group’s facilitator of the close down procedures. The ISC is monitored via Internet Security Camera and logs of activity are stored for periods of up to three months. Research Lab Policy (ROOM 102) Jim Burns, coordinator of the Research Lab will meet with students by appointment only (due to limited space and inability to handle multiple walk-ins simultaneously). When scheduling appointments, any group that is larger than the research lab can accommodate in Room 102, can potentially work in the ISC, Room 101. This is contingent upon the ISC not being reserved via the On-line system during that given time slot. Note: During this the initial phase of the ISC, computers are not yet equipped to accommodate research students due to the lack of available/installed research software. We expect installation of upgraded SPSS and Atlas TI by the beginning of the fall 2009 semester.
