The Adult Learning Center (ALC) at the San Mateo Adult School is an individualized, self-paced study center
where students can complete coursework toward the Adult School High School Diploma, or prepare for the GED.


   1. When will I be able to start the High School Diploma Program?
      You may start the program at any time during the year.

   2. What are the High School Diploma Program hours?
      The Adult Learning Center High School Diploma Program hours are Monday through Thursday 9:00 am –
      12:00 pm and 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Students schedule their own hours and welcome to attend both sessions.

   3. Do I have to attend every day?
      No, you do not have to attend every day, however, keep in mind that the more hours you spend the closer
      you will be to reaching your academic goal.

   4. Can I take work home? No, all work must be done and completed in the classroom. There are two
      teachers in the Adult Learning Center if a student needs assistance.

   5. How many credits do I need to get my High School Diploma at the Adult School?
      The San Mateo Adult School requires 200 total credits.

   6. What are the San Mateo Adult School High School Diploma course requirements?
            English               40 units
            Algebra               10 units
            Other Mathematics     20 units
            Science               20 units
            Social Science        30 units
            Health                 5 units
            Electives             75 units

   7. How do I earn credits toward a High School Diploma?
      a) Credits earned in other accredited high schools, adult schools, colleges, or technical schools.
      b) Credits earned in a foreign country
      c) Work achievement or military service
      d) Pre-approved job training classes
      e) Pre-approved work experience

   8. How do I enroll in the High School Diploma Program and is there a fee?
      a) Call the San Mateo Adult School (650) 558-2116 to schedule an enrollment appointment with an
         academic advisor.
      b) Bring your most recent high school transcript.
      c) The Adult School academic advisor will set up a contract so you will know exactly what course work
         must be completed to receive your diploma.
      d) The fee is $30.00 per semester

   9. How can I get a copy of my most recent high school transcript?
      Contact the registrar at your most recently attended high school to request an official transcript.

10. Are teachers available to assist me towards earning credits and reaching my academic goal?
    Yes, the San Mateo Adult School offers teacher-directed classes for adults and qualified high school
    seniors.
    a) Adults (ages 18 and over) have priority over high school seniors in all classes. Registration is held by
        appointment only please call 650/558-2116.
    b) High school seniors should contact their high school counselors to see if they qualify.

11. How do I get a copy of my San Mateo Adult School High School Transcript?
    Complete the High School Diploma Transcript Request Form found on our website www.smace.org or call
    (650) 558-2116

12. Do I have to take the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to get an Adult School High
    School Diploma?
    Yes, you still have to take and pass the CAHSEE test.

13. Can I take the CAHSEE without being enrolled in the San Mateo Adult School High School Diploma
    Program?
    No, you have to be enrolled here at the San Mateo Adult School in order to take the CAHSEE at the San
    Mateo Adult School.

14. Do I have to take and pass the CAHSEE before I enroll in the High School Diploma Program?
    No.

15. How can I prepare for the CAHSEE?
    The San Mateo Adult School offers CAHSEE preparation classes for both English and Math.

16. How can I find out when the next CAHSEE is?
    The CASHEE exams are given three (3) times a year; March, October, and December. Generally
    speaking, the High School Diploma teachers notify the students of the upcoming CAHSEE exam dates.
