In Governor Jennifer Granholm’s letter to DCEA friends, she stated “It is a privilege to welcome you to the Detroit Chinese Engineers Association’s 25th Anniversary Gala. The contributions you have made to the development of Michigan’s auto industry are indeed significant. The Detroit Chinese Engineers Association is in a truly unique position to nurture further development of technology in America while leading in the manufacture of new technologies on a global basis. Again, congratulations on 25 years of excellence in Michigan; and my very best wishes for your continued success.” Senator Carl Levin wrote to DCEA friends: ”I am pleased to offer my best wishes as you gather to celebrate the 25th anniversary gala. You can be proud of your history of supporting your members in professional and career development, while strengthening your 25th Anniversary Gala Event Detroit Chinese Engineers Association (DCEA) was celebrating its 25th Anniversary with a very successful event on Friday, October 28, 2005. The event started at 5:30 p.m. in the GM Heritage Center at 6400, Center Drive, Sterling Heights, Michiagn. There were about 200 people attended the event. They include DCEA members, guests and leaders from other local Chinese organizations and industrial companies, as well as representatives from Governor Jennifer Granholm’s office, Senator Carl Levin’s office and Senator Debbie Stabenow’s office. Dr. Sook Wikinson, Chair of Advisory Council on Asian Pacific American Affairs, State of Michigan, also participated the event. During the reception, people toured an impressive display of classic vehicles and automotive technologies. Dr. Hua He, current DCEA President, made welcome remarks followed by Champagne toast and slide show of the DCEA’s history. After the dinner, Dr. Tai Chan, the event general Chairman and 2000 DCEA President, chaired the program. He read the congratulation letter from the U.S. President George W. Bush, followed by the remarks from the three representatives on behalf of Governor Granholm, Senators Levin and Stabenow. The event paid tribute to Dr. Litton Lee, the founder of DCEA. Dr. Lee passed away last year. Detroit Chinese Engineers Association Newsletter November 2005 His wife, Janilla Lee, and two daughters, Cynthia and Katrina, attended the event. Janilla Lee also served as DCEA President in 1990 (the first female DCEA president). The program was followed by the plenary speeches by six distinguished guests: Dr. Charles Chambers (President of LTU), Mr. Matt Tsien (Executive Director of GM), Garrick Hu (VP of ArvinMeritor), Mr. Richard Chow-Wah (VP of DCX), Ben Kuo (Director of Ford), and Dr. Frank Wu (Dean of Law School, Wayne State). Their inspiring remarks and comments on DCEA organization and its development, Chinese activities in great Detroit area, as well as China’s development attracted the attention of the whole audience and received numerous applauses. University, Ford Motor Company, General Motors and DaimlerChrysler. All of the people in DCEA are working toward the vision of “Together we advance in technology and career”. DCEA promotes technical excellence and innovations in science and engineering, provide a global network for technology, business, and cultural exchange, disseminate information on career and business opportunities, promote cultural awareness and the value of diversity in society. We welcome more people join DCEA and get more involved in DCEA activities. (By Yucong Wang) ☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺ The live entertainment organized by Dr. David Chang was another highlight in the event. His humorous Team Effort Made Gala Event Great Success jokes along with three professional artists’ singing and instrument performance gave audience a very happy We had a hit on October 28 - a great event by all means! ending. Everyone I met commented on how good they feel about our fun packed program. The site was just so perfectly The event was originally for 150 people due to matching to the occasion. Alan Luo commented that this space limit. Because of overwhelming response, a few event is a high point in the DCEA history, and I think that more tables were added. There were still some of the we all agree. people on the waiting list and could not be fit in. The DCEA board apologizes to these people. A great team effort led to this great result. Tai's ability to secure the facility marked a good start of the preparation a The event was a result of many hours of volunteering few months ago. The logo design by David Chang, the work by the organizing committee and other DCEA gifts ordered in China with the help from Lisa Wang (via members and friends. Specifically, we would like to Jane Liu) added unique touch to the memory. The thank the following people for their contributions: Tai program book looked so classy, when marching with Tai’s Chan (planning & coordination, greeting letters, plenary Champagne, the big cake, the balloon, the model cars and session), Shan Shih (fundraising), Hua He (VIP other details, set the classy tone for the event, as if all invitation), Yucong Wang (commemorative program whispering " this is not just another event". Thank you book & slide shows), Yilu Zhang (publicity & Yucong and your team for making this program book look advertisement), Kingman Yee (finance), David Chang so nice. The food, the associated presentation and the (logo design & entertainment program), Alan Luo (food service as a whole package was excellent, and the cost was & beverage), Honglu Wang and Scarlet Yuan amazingly well controlled. Alan made several trips to both (registration & tickets), Shiny Qin (media contact), and the restaurant and the heritage center to plan everything Lisa Gray (souvenir). out, and a job well done. DCEA would like to thank the following organizations for their generous support which made the event a huge success: General Motors, ArvinMeritor, DaimlerChrysler and FUCHI EMC as Gold Sponsors, as well as Dynamax, ETA and Generalety as Silver Sponsors. DCEA also would like to acknowledge its Annual Corporate Sponsors: Lawrence Technological The ad runs and web updates were very timely done by Yilu which brought good awareness of the event in the community. Emails by all and the organization table purchase effort by Yucong, Honglu, Shengdong, Tai,, Shih, Hua, Alan etc helped to boost the attendance, to a point that all seats were taken a week before the event. This, together with some last minutes registration caused Tai Chan scrambled a little in finalizing the seating and Detroit Chinese Engineers Association Newsletter November 2005 All those tasks, if not well coordinated, would not have converged to the final good results as we see. As the gala general chair, Tai Chan established, updated and constantly tracked a spreadsheet that managed the tasks at all levels, Tai also set up a weekly telephone conference calls with participation of the committee chairs and send meeting notes out. This is a great process that enabled a very efficient and effective coordination. I have The plenary session is concise and yet powerful. Tai participated organizing large community events before, but and the team started invitation letters early and achieved this event is the most smoothest. Tai showed a strong a line-up of string of prominent plenary speakers. I have leadership as the event general chair, as the MC and as been to other events where I listened to speeches of well as in the execution of tasks. I don’t know how good a some of the speakers before, but it is quite a different professional event planner can be, but for our event, I sensation to have them all speak back-to-back. Plus, know for sure that Tai is the best. because of the short time allocated, their speeches were right to the point, and easily commanded the attention I have to stop here, and apologize if I miss anything. Wish from the audience. It’s also interesting to compare to see you all this Saturday. Let us exchange and review different views of the speakers. photo pictures and celebrate the event behind us and the great work we have done! The art performance was just sensational. David Chang’s own jokes, and introduction to the performers Hua He, DCEA President, 2005 brought waves of laughter non-stop. The songs and Oct. 31, 2005 Erhu performance deeply touched the audience. Thank also goes to David’s wonderful introduction during ☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺ tribute to Litton Lee. printing out the name cards (a good problem to have though). At the site many board members (Ming, Wei, Shengdong, Yucong, Kingman, Connie, Tai) showed up early for the setting up, Honglu brought her husband to help as well. At the gate, Scarlet and Connie did great job registering the guests. They underwent high stress at the peak time when many rushed in. New Board Membe rs & President, 2006 Elected All those great activities were not possible without a good fundraising. In fact we exceeded fundraising target. Shan Shih played an instrumental role in getting sponsorship from Arvinmeritor, ETC, FUCHI and Dynamax, Honglu Wang “twisted many arms” at DCX to get the golden sponsorship. We ended up using the GMHC facility with no charge as a goodwill from GM thanking to Tai’s work. Yucong worked out a way of printing the program book in China and bringing them back to the States with another goodwill support from GM through GM China. Meanwhile, Kingman worked actively behind the scene to balance our account. We should also recognize Scarlet and Honglu for their registration effort before the event. The DCEA board has approved the election of four new DCEA board members, starting 2006. They are Dr. Sam Guo (Yazaki), Dr. Honglu Wang (DCX), Dr. Jianping Sheng (TRW) and Chao Chen (Ford). Each of them has a three-year term. Dr. Yucong Wang has been elected as DCEA President, 2006. Let us congratulate them and support their work in the coming year. ☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺ Detroit Chinese Engineers Association Newsletter November 2005 DCEA Members Solute Past-Presidents and Board Members for Their Leadership and Support DCEA Past Presidents 李理同 1982 Lee, Litton Deceased 吴海 1983 Wu, Hai Retired from Ford, currently with China Motor (Taiwan) 罗文 1984 Lo, Wayne Deceased 陈庆涛 1985 Cheng, Chin-Tao Retired from Ford 罗时佑 1986 Lo, Robert Shih-Chi Retired from Ford 张振东 1987 Chang, David C.
