Staff Scientist conducts research, or provides essential research-related services to the OHSU, beyond the level of a postdoctoral fellow. Staff Scientists may also provide high-level research support to
other OHSU scientists, where the Staff Scientist’s salary is partially or completely provided by those scientists, or by the OHSU. Individuals in this category have a Ph.D. degree or equivalent (M.D.,
D.V.M.). Typically, they have substantial expertise in an area of technology required to conduct biomedical research at the OHSU. Exception to the requirement for terminal degree and postdoctoral
training may be requested by the Division Head, and authorized by the OHSU Director, in unique and exceptional circumstances. Due to the nature of their duties, Staff Scientists are not required to
have independent funding. Though Staff Scientists may be funded by, and performing research in, another scientist’s laboratory, for the purpose of applying for their own funding, Staff Scientists are
considered independent investigators and may apply for all research grants subject to OHSU procedures. **

Appointment of individuals to a Staff Scientist position will be proposed by their supervisor and by the department or unit Director. Promotion within the Staff Scientist ranks will be proposed by their
supervisor, and approved by the Division Head and Director’s office as above. For promotion of existing Staff Scientists to higher rank, input may be requested by the supervisor, Division Head or
Director’s office.
