                                                                          How to Customize Course Menu

Blackboard allows instructors to fully customize the course menu that students see when entering the course.
Instructors can have just 3 buttons, 30 buttons, or any number in between. It is also possible to isolate tools so that
they have their own unique button, rather than be buried down within another page. For instance, instead of having
a Communication button that takes students to the Communications Area, you could have a separate Email button
(or a Message button).

CREATING A NEW BUTTON ON THE BLACKBOARD COURSE MENU
    1. Click Control Panel.

    2. Click Manage Course Menu.

    3. Click one of the following:

 +Content Area -- adds a new content area for your course, allowing you to create customized areas
for you to store documents and other files relating to your course.

 +Tool Link -- creates a direct link to a variety of the tools available from the standard Tools area, as
well as from the Communication area. For instance, you can have a button directly connected to the
Email communication tool or a button to the Calendar.

 +Course Link -- create a direct link to another area of your Blackboard course. For instance, you can
create a direct link to a specific subfolder contained within your Assignments content area. You cannot
create a direct link to a specific file, only the folder in which that file is contained.

         +External Link -- create a link to a URL outside of Blackboard (e.g. http://edtech.mst.edu). This is
useful for directing student to external web content relevant to your course.

   4. Depending on which option you selected above, you will have slightly different options for adding the new
      button.

        +Content Area:

           a. Choose a name from the drop-down list or type in a new name for the button.

           b. Select Available for Student/Participant users to allow your students to see the button. The
other options (Allow Guest access and Allow Observer access) will have no effect since those
options are disabled at the system level due to campus-wide policies.

           c. Click Submit when finished.

NOTES:

Your newly created item will show up at the bottom of the current list of item. To move the item to a different place
in the list, simply select the new position from the drop-down list next to the name of the item. The list will
automatically rearrange itself to reposition the item in the desired location. For instance, to move Announcements
to be number 2, simply select 2 from the drop-down list next to Announcements.

Click Modify next to an item if you want to change the name of the item and its availability to the students.

 Some Modify options will be different, depending on what type of item is being modified.

 For instance, modifying the Communications item (assuming its tied to the Communications area) will allow
you to set the availability for a number of different tools in addition to modifying the availability of the item
        as a whole.

To remove a item, simply click Remove next to the item.

 A dialog box will pop up saying, "Warning: this action will remove all content under this area. Continue?"

 Click OK to confirm the removal of the item or Cancel if you don't want to remove the item.

 IMPORTANT. Although the warning message says all content will be removed, this is NOT true. Instead,
the button will be removed, but the content associated with the item will still be there, even if the content is
not generally available to students in the course.

Now when you or your students access your Blackboard course, you and they will see the new button(s) you have
created for the course. They can click the button to go directly to designated areas within your course. Buttons are
available in both Quick View and Detail View.
