									Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
  acute respiratory distress syndrome caused by increased permeability of alveolar capillaries leading to
  fluid accumulation in alveoli i.e. non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema


Criteria (American-European Consensus Conference)

     acute onset
     bilateral infiltrates on CXR
     non-cardiogenic (pulmonary artery wedge pressure needed if doubt)
     pO2/FiO2 < 200 mmHg


Causes

     infection: sepsis, pneumonia
     massive blood transfusion
     trauma
     smoke inhalation
     pancreatitis
     cardio-pulmonary bypass
