MUSIC TEACHER We are seeking a good honours graduate and qualified teacher to join our music department from January 2010. Latymer has an outstanding musical tradition, and this position offers the opportunity for a committed and enthusiastic teacher to work with a large number of highly talented young musicians in a thriving department. The successful candidate is likely to teach students throughout the school at Key Stage 3, GCSE, AS and A2 levels. He or she will take a share of responsibility for various extra-curricular groups, the distribution of these groups changing from time to time, directing them in rehearsals and concert performances. He or she may accompany pupils as appropriate in music exams, and at various concerts during the year, as well as attending residential holiday courses and foreign tours organised by the Music Department. The successful candidate’s precise job description will be established with reference to the candidate’s strengths and those of the other members of the department. An interest in Music Technology would be an advantage to candidates applying for this position, as would experience in choral conducting.
MUSIC DEPARTMENT Music plays a central role in the life of Latymer. Many pupils are attracted to the school, not just because of the academic excellence, but also because of the considerable opportunities that exist in the arts, both in the curriculum and in ‘extra-curricular’ activity. The result is an enormous number of pupils involved in musical activity of one kind or another, and very high quality in all of that activity, culminating in the almost professional standards of many of the most able pupils. The Music Department is housed on the top floor of the Mills Building, a new Performing Arts Centre which was opened in February 2000. There are three main teaching rooms, one of which is equipped with 16 computers, and all of which have interactive white boards. There are 12 practice rooms, which are used for individual lessons, group work and private practice, and a Music Technology room with a further 5 computers. Both the Great Hall, which seats up to 1,000 people, and the Small Hall are used for concerts; and a newly converted performance studio is due to be opened early in 2010. All pupils study music as part of their Key Stage 3 National Curriculum. In Year 7 pupils are taught in whole class groups, having four lessons (two singles and a double), in each two-week cycle. In Years 8 and 9 pupils are taught in half-class groups, having a double lesson in each two-week cycle, and an additional music technology double lesson for half of the year in Year 9. Between 30 and 40 students study GCSE Music (Edexcel) each year, and these are divided into two groups in Year 10 and 11. Academic results are very strong both at GCSE and A-level. Since 2006, 65% of the 121 GCSE Music candidates were awarded A* (100% A*-C). The numbers studying music at AS and A2 level vary from year to year, but there are currently a total of 30 students studying music at AS or A2 level (Edexcel). Since 2006, 48 of our 61 A-level Music candidates were awarded an A grade (100% A-B). Many students continue their musical studies at conservatoire or university, including Oxford and Cambridge, some with choral or organ scholarships.

The extra-curricular life of the music department is very rich, providing many valuable opportunities for those studying music at all levels to experience the excitement of live performance. The aim of the department is to provide an opportunity for as many pupils as possible to perform in an ensemble of some kind appropriate to their ability. The School has 3 Symphony Orchestras, a Chamber Orchestra, a Wind Orchestra, Concert Band and Jazz Band. There are four large choral groups: Senior Choir (Year 9-13) and Chamber Choir (Year 10-13), as well as Junior Choir and Junior Singers for those in years 7 and 8 and a Year 9 choir. There are also a large number of smaller ensembles. These are directed by the three full-time members of the department and by the heads of woodwind, brass and strings. Recent repertoire for the Symphony Orchestra has included concertos by Brahms and Dvorak, John Adams’s The Chairman Dances and Shostakovich’s Symphony No.5. Choral groups have recently performed Bach’s Magnificat, Elgar’s Benedictus and Stephen Montague’s Dark Sun with orchestra. There are also sixth-form run Barbershop groups for boys and for girls. Each year there are collaborative projects between the Music and Drama departments, resulting in large-scale productions of musicals such as Les Misérables, South Pacific and The Pajama Game. There are many concerts at the school each year, and groups are frequently asked to perform outside school, including at the National Festival of Music for Youth and Schools’ Prom in London. In both 2000 and 2002 Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra won Highly Commended Awards in the finals of the National Festival of Music for Youth in London’s Royal Festival Hall, and in 2006 and 2008 Chamber Orchestra won the Outstanding Performance Award at Symphony Hall, Birmingham. Musicians from the school also travel abroad – each summer a group of some 45 young musicians undertake a European tour, most recently to the Czech Republic, Italy and Germany. The Chamber Choir and Orchestra will be giving concerts in Holland in July 2010. The Department is very well resourced. In addition to the computers in the department, each teaching room has CD and minidisk players as well as portable digital recorders and Internet access. There are 4 grand pianos, including a new Yamaha S20 in the Great Hall, 14 upright pianos, and a new 3manual drawstop Wyvern organ in the Great Hall which was installed in October 2003. The department owns a large number of orchestral instruments, including pedal timpani and other orchestral percussion, mixing desk and a multi-track recorder. The classrooms are equipped with a number of electronic keyboards, tuned and untuned percussion for used in class.
