The President’s Monthly Message
The Holiday Social is but a wonderful memory. Those who attended had a great time with plenty of food, drink and friendship. Many thanks to all who helped put it together. The committee included: Sylvia Allen, Pat Hacker, Connie Wylie, Nikki Harris, Ann McBride, and Lynda Smith. Special thanks to the following husbands: Max Winnie and Dan Smith the parking attendants and bartenders Ken Hacker and Nikki’s husband Craig Spitzer. Frank Ruotolo did a fantastic job selling raffle tickets to support our chosen charity “Child Protective Services food boxes.” I also want to thank all who helped clean up after the party. We have really good news to report. We raised $520 during the Holiday Social and December coffee for the “Child Protective Services” food boxes! Thank you to everyone who donated to the cause. We will be shopping after the first of the year and assembling the boxes to be delivered the week of January 19th. You should all feel great about helping someone who is having a tough time. There are many out there. If there is anyone out there who wants to do more, call or e-mail Pat Hacker. We have some interesting guest speakers lined up for the January and February coffees, thanks to Pat Hacker. We have an artist for January and a hypnotherapist for February’s coffee. Lunch Bunch will be at Metro Lafayette. Upcoming Bay Area Excursions include one to Intel. Check out this newsletter for more information. Our featured member this month is Lynda Smith. She is our 3 rd Vice President in charge of coffees and just recently stepped into heading up the documentaries. I am constantly reminded how dedicated the women are in this club. We never seem to be short of those willing to help in any way they can. That’s what makes this club special in so many ways. We are continuing our growth with several new members signing on recently. Make sure when you see them that you make them feel welcome. If you have friends or neighbors that you think would enjoy our club, invite them to a few functions especially the coffees. We want to continue this growth. The more the merrier! Kathy Winnie, President

Bay Area Excursion:
Intel Museum, Santa Clara
Thursday, January 29th
9:15 AM Carpoolers meet at Heather Farms (4th driveway) 11:00 AM Docent Tour RSVP: Nikki Harris
nikkihar@aol.com / (Please indicate if you are willing to drive)
Nearly 80,000 people a year visit Intel’s 10,000 square foot museum, which celebrates 40 years of the Santa Clara chipmaker’s history through more than 30 interactive exhibits, educational programs and docent-led tours. Notable exhibit Item: A binary-code exhibit allows visitors to spell words using a combination of 0’s and 1’s in a computer’s binary, or two-part, language. Odd fact: The most common request by visitors is to visit an actual silicon chip fabrication facility, or fab, which cannot be accommodated because the facilities must be kept perfectly clean. The museum has created an exhibit that recreates what it is like to be inside a fab, and visitors can dress in technician ‘bunny’ suits.
We will have lunch at a popular Santa Clara restaurant. Please contact Nikki or Kathy with any suggestions near Intel, which is located at 2200 Mission College Blvd. Cost: Each passenger should plan on compensating car pool drivers $4 for gas and share in any parking expense. Lunch costs are based on individual selection.
Holiday Social and December Coffee Raffle
Our raffle to raise money to fill Food Boxes for Child Protective Services was a great success. As a result of your generosity, we have $520 to spend on food. This amount will be supplemented by some donated food and we are hoping to fill 15 boxes. If you, by chance, have a food donation contact, please let us know because that would increase our ability to help. The food to fill the boxes will be purchased in bulk by members of the Community Outreach Activity Group in early January. We will meet at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 to pack the boxes. Our packing location is the home of Andy Freedman, 2189 Ridgepointe Court, Walnut Creek. If you need directions call Andy. We invite everyone to participate. It will be fun to get together and see this project through to completion. Let Pat Hacker know if you will be helping pack (pla615@sbcglobal.net). Many thanks to everyone who bought raffle tickets. By the way, Sandy Kretsch was the lucky winner of the beautiful "Toast the Town" basket.

JANUARY 2009 COFFEE
Hostess: Where: When:
Paulette Chandler 1601 Geary Road, Walnut Creek, CA 94597 Wednesday, January 14th at 10:00 am (Board meets at 9:00 am) Nikki Harris, Pat Hacker, & Carolyn Priest The Art of Landscape Painting
Co-hostesses: Program:
We are delighted to announce that we will be brightening up our dreary January landscape by hosting a presentation about landscape painting by a young and accomplished Bay Area painter. Bryan Mark Taylor currently works out of his Bay Area studio and also teaches at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Since moving to California, West Coast landscape has become an exciting challenge for Bryan who previously spent much of his early career depicting both southern Italy and the Rocky Mountain region. He has connected with the plein air movement and has participated in many plein air events. Brian is a member of the Oil Painters of America and was juried in their 2005 National Exhibition. He was also juried into the San Luis Obispo Plein Air Show in 2004, 2005 and 2006, winning an award in 2005. Make sure you put this special event on your calendar! In fact, you might consider inviting a friend to join you at this coffee with its unique opportunity to learn more about landscape art, the process of painting, tips on collecting and also personally experience a live demonstration of how an artist begins a new work. Directions: From highway 680, take the Geary/Treat exit. Travel west about .3 miles on Geary to Hall Lane. Turn Left and Paulette’s townhome will be located on the right. Visitor and street parking is available.
Notice: Unclaimed 2008-2009 Membership Directories A good number of members have yet to claim their new directory at one the Fall events where they have been th available for pick up. Those unclaimed will once again be available at our January 14 Coffee and we would appreciate it if you would stop in to socialize and pick yours up. If you are unable to pick it up at the January Coffee, please contact Carolyn Priest (carolynb.priest@gmail.com) to make alternative arrangements.
