John Lucky bought the 1948 Champion Starlite
Coupe, pictured above, 20 years ago. It was sitting
out ”for sale” on the corner of Morrish and Corunna
Rds near Flint. John spent the next 20 years shopping
for parts at SASCO and the swap meet in South Bend.
A few parts came with the car.
Last year John sold the car to Northeastern Michigan
Chapter member, David Black. Eleven months later John Loeding’s ‘47 Champ Starlight Coupe
David finished the restoration, he did all the work
himself except for the paint. David says he probably
has 200 hours of work into the car. John Lucky
helped David with the brakes. All the work was done
in David’s garage.
The paint color is original, Concord Blue.
As the year went by John found 2 wheel covers,
David put them both on the same side so it is hard to
notice that all four do not match. Just recently John
was in the basement looking for the meat grinder and
what should he discover, the mirror. Sounds like he
was hiding it from someone else in the house?
FYI: David is in his 80’s!

Pure Stock Muscle Car Drags were held on Sept 18-19
Mid-
at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex, Stanton, Michigan
I Was There! By Niall Olling
The annual Pure Stock Muscle Car
Drags (PSMCD) are held each year in
September. Last year the event was
rained out, this year the weather was
perfect. It was sunny all day and the
temperature was very comfortable for
watching this enjoyable event.
NEMSDC members present were
Dave & Karen Pfahler, Jim Huntoon, Niall
Olling, Bill Lape, Wayne Darling, & Carl &
Mark Danielsen.
The Studebaker's ran very well this year
with only 1 Stude breaking down during
the time trials Saturday morning. To
everyone’s surprise, Ted Harbit drove the
Red Tomato ‘63 R4 Lark this year just a
few months after a near-death accident
totaling the Chicken Hawk. The fastest
Ted drove the Red Tomato in the 1/4 mile
was 109 mph!

The other Studebakers did very well and
the Studebaker crowd in attendance was
also large and enthusiastic.
More information about the PSMCD will
be in an upcoming Turning Wheels. This
event is always well attended by people
around the country and media outlets

September 26th, Dow Gardens and Emerson Park, Midland, Michigan
An article announcing the meeting of
NEMC/SDC appeared in the Midland
newspaper, thanks to Bill Lape, As a
result, quite a few Studebaker fans were
in the parking lot at Dow Gardens
waiting for the Studebakers to arrive. Lots
of pictures were taken, lots of memories
shared and newsletters given out to
prospective new members.
The day was cloudy and the weather
channels told us there would be rain. The
rain held off, the group was able to tour
Dow Gardens and move on to Emerson
Park. Jim Huntoon grilled hotdogs and
hamburgers.
No one left hungry.
Everyone I talked to wants to return to Jim and Betty Purtell’s ‘63 GT Hawk
Dow Gardens in the spring, what a lovely
place!
Also, it was great to see Studebakers
and their drivers that live in the northern
area of our chapter. f^
