Smart Companies Virtualise
Virtualizing your data center brings many benefits…
Financial: Save money by consolidating servers Administrative: Deploy new servers more easily Agility: Make your servers dance across your hardware Flexibility: Your hardware selection becomes less critical
Disaster Recovery: Quickly restore to different locations and hardware when needed
Virtualization Poses Challenges for Backup & Recovery
Virtualization Slows Backup Processes
• Consumes server I/O & CPU • Impact other applications • Creates bandwidth problems
Virtualization Increases Storage Consumption
• Virtual machine “sprawl” requires backup & recovery • Duplicate data stored across every virtual machine • Disaster recovery = duplicate data (OS)
Virtualization Reduces Productivity of Backup Team
• Multiple tools for virtual and physical server recovery • Finding individual files consumes time w/o a catalog • Time to manage gap between protected machines and unprotected machines
NetBackup & Backup Exec for Virtual Machines
• Comprehensive Backup and Recovery for Virtual Machines
• Protect and recover all physical and virtual machines • Deliver advanced application & database recovery • Centralize policies, operations, and reporting
• Recognized Leader in Virtual Machine Protection
• Customer Trust & Experience
• Symantec protects 90% of the Global 2000
• 35,000+ NetBackup customers worldwide • 1,000+ Joint Sun/Symantec NetBackup customers • Customers today protecting petabytes of VM data • Best of VMware World awards in 2007 & 2008

NetBackup in a Virtual Environment
Two Main Approaches to VMware to VM Protection
VM Client-Based Data Backup
(Normal Backup Client or Deduplication Client)
Client and Application Agent Inside VM
Off-Host Backup via VMware VCB
(Off-Host Backup Client + VCB)
vSphere 4.0 Supported in NetBackup 6.5.3 and Later
• Running traditional (pre-VMware) backup clients risks overloading the ESX server • A deduplication client inside the guest VM is strongly preferred to a traditional client due to its much lighter profile
• VCB (“VMware Consolidated Backup”) is VMware’s high-performance snapshotting technology that sends VM images (“VMDK files”) to a separate physical “proxy” server, which executes the actual backup
• Using VCB effectively minimizes the impact of backups on the ESX server

Flexible Virtual Machine protection methods coupled with unique enabling technologies
NetBackup for VMware vSphere 4.0
NetBackup 6.5.x
VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB)
*Requires vSphere-compatible VCB and Converter from VMware
• Day-1 support in 6.5.4 • Patch for 6.5.3
NetBackup 7.0 (roadmap)
vSphere vStorage API for Data Protection
•True off-host backup without VCB copy • Improved Incremental Backups
Use NBU 6.5.x and VCB today Immediate vSphere support Off-host configuration
Use NBU 7.0 & vStorage tomorrow Same off-host configuration Faster performance (no VCB)
Simplify Virtual Machine Backup Management
Centralize Administration
Automatic discovery of new VMs for VMware & Hyper-V
Common policy management
Fast, Three Step Recovery
Centralized catalog – find the right file instantly
Recover virtual to physical or to a new virtual
Monitor & Report on Exposure
Identify unprotected VMware or Hyper-V VMs Automatically generate daily reports Centralize reporting across different backup products / platforms (Backup Reporter) Identify unprotected virtual machines (VMware & Hyper-V)
