17. Programme structures and features, curriculum and award requirements

This programme is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to understand, analyse and
practice chemistry across a range of applications as well as to provide and develop key skills appropriate to a
career in research or other chosen career. In addition to the specified chemistry units, student will also take
several compulsory University subjects such as English Language and Nationhood studies.
The course is offered in full-time mode and is based on a 6 Semester Academic Year with several subjects being
delivered and assessed in each Semester. Assessment is at most 50% on examination and at least 50% on
coursework
A variety of teaching methods is used as appropriate to the subject being studied. Most new information is
introduced by way of 3 hours of lectures per week. Learning is also supported by a series of tutorials and problem
solving workshop in which students are guided by a member of academic staff. About 20% of the program will be
spent on laboratory based practical work. An advanced practical work in the form of a two semesters project will
be carried out in the final year.
The first two years of the programme involve the study of a broad foundation of both subject-specific and generic
knowledge and skills across a range of chemical topics. In the fourth semester, students will take a subject on
research methodology which is designed specifically to introduce to students to the various type of research
design and information retrieval.
The structure of the final year is to allow students to refine their studies in areas of specific interest or relevance to
their intended career choice. A choice of electives lecture units is available and students have considerable choice
of research area for their final year project depending on the aspect of chemistry in which the student seeks to
specialise.

Students should:
• Achieve a total of 96 credit hours with minimum CPA of 2.00.
• Complete and pass the final year undergraduate project.

19. Career Prospects

Graduates of the programme can work as a chemist or scientist involved in research activities and product
development in the public and industrial sector. A number of public research institutions such as MARDI,
PORIM, RRI, PRSS, AMREC, SIRIM and MINT offer job opportunities as research officers to those graduates
with expertise in specific fields of chemistry who are interested in research. Career as research officers usually
involved in synthesising new materials or discovery and development of new methods. Graduates from this
programme also have opportunities to work as academia in the public and private higher learning institutions
where they can pursue postgraduate studies and carry out research.
