This formidable duo had cast a shadow of fear upon the entire kingdom, and tales of their terrible deeds would make for a great play. Unfortunately, given the current economic situation, we couldn't afford the necessary props for such a performance. So instead we bring you the story of Cinderella as it truly happened in the kingdom of Banglapore, before the dragon and the sorcerer showed up. We begin our story in the house of Anjali; we say the house of Anjali because the house did in fact belong to Anjali; her late father had left it to her after he met his end in an unfortunate traffic incident involving a cow, a tourist, and a well-meaning goat who simply happened to be in the wrong place in the wrong time. However, currently, the house was being run under the strict supervision of Anjali's evil stepmother who did not have enough sentiment in her body to warm an orphaned bacterium. But don't take my word for it; you can see for yourself… Lights on at 0:03 of song Curtains open at 0:06 of song [Music: Chhoti si Aasha] Cinderella sweeping the floor cleaning the house dancing around feeling happy getting her chores done Music comes to a crashing halt Evil Stepmother comes out screaming (through Entry 1) Evil Stepmother Anjali! Why the hell are you making such a racket so early in the morning? Anjali I’m sorry mother I was just… Evil Stepmother Oh Lord what does a woman have to do get some sleep in this place? Just keep it down and don’t wake your sisters it’s only 11:00AM! Anjali Sure… I’m sorr… Evil Stepmother (not listening) And make sure I get my tea and breakfast in my room in 10 minutes. And for heaven’s sake NO MORE SINGING! 3 Storms off (through Entry 1) Anjali I’ll get it right away mummy. Anjali goes offstage (through Entry 3) Black out Curtains close Narrator As you can see, Anjali's life was no fairytale. In addition to the not-so-nice mother, Anjali was afflicted with not one but two extremely selfish stepsisters who believed that the world revolved around them. This is the residence of the King and Queen of Banglapore; their sole heir was their only son, and his name (expectant pause) was Raj. Raj had just recently returned from his studies at Oxford, and was now the most eligible bachelor in Banglapore. However, his disinclination to settle down and some of his newly acquired western habits had displeased his more traditional parents who felt that perhaps a family of his own would bring Raj back to his roots. Lights on Raj wakes up groggy and goes for breakfast. His father looks up angrily. King (Reading newspaper) So you finally decided to wake up your highness. Raj Aw c’mon dad not again! (Hugs mother) Good morning mummy. King Not again?! (Putting down paper) Son you aren’t 18 anymore. It’s time you became more responsible. Staying out every night till 3AM, tell me does that look good? What will our neighbors think? Raj That’s not true I was back at 2:45. Queen Raj beta you are getting old when will you get married? Raj Mom I’m too young to be tied down… King Oh so you think your mother and I are tying each other down? Raj 7 No dad it’s not that… King We have organized your engagement party this Sunday and your mother and I will choose a bride for you if you don’t choose one yourself. Raj C’mon dad don’t you think you’re overreacting? King No. It’s time you became a responsible young man. Raj This isn’t fair… King Life isn’t fair - get used to it (walking away). Raj But dad... Mom - say something! Queen I’m sorry beta but your father is right. You need to get married. Don’t wait up for us. (Turning to girls) Now remember try and impress his parents because if he doesn’t choose someone by the end of the night his parents will pick the girl… Evil Stepmother, Monica & Ronica leave. Anjali sweeping, stops for a second and runs to the corner and starts crying. Anjali It’s not fair. It’s not fair! Narrator But luckily for this downtrodden young lady, someone was listening... Enter Fairy Godmother [Music: Har Kisi Ko Nahi Milta] Looking around clears her throat. Fairy Godmother What’s the matter dear? Why so glum? 9 Anjali (surprised) Who are you? Fairy Godmother Me? Well I’m your fairy god person. Anjali (stammering) F...f.f.fairy god person? Don’t you mean fairy godmother? Fairy Godmother No child the new politically correct term is fairy god person, it’s less sexist this way. Anjali Oh! Fairy Godmother Now what’s the problem? Anjali (crying again) It’s not fair that my stepsisters always go to these wonderful parties and I can never go. Fairy Godmother Who said you can’t? Anjali Well I don’t have any nice clothes? And how would I even get there? Fairy Godmother Well that’s why I am here. Now turn around. Blackout Lights on Anjali has been transformed. Anjali Wow this is so beautiful how can I ever thank you? Anjali hugs Fairy Godmother. Anjali But how am I supposed to get there? Fairy Godmother Think nothing of it. Fairy Godmother Well there are a few formalities you need to take care of before you can use any of this. Anjali Formalities? Fairy Godmother (taking out papers and a pen) Yes you see due to new governmental regulations I can grant wishes only until midnight. After that I am afraid your trial offer expires and the clothes and everything else will disappear, unless you want to pay for them? Anjali I don’t understand. Fairy Godmother You see since I didn’t actually make the dress I could get sued by the designers for illegal sharing of patented material. It’s all very complicated these days. If you had the money you could purchase this lovely gown, but I am guessing you don’t have 10,000 rupees on you? Anjali, flabbergasted, shakes her head. Fairy Godmother I thought as much. So you have till midnight – enjoy! Fairy Godmother disappears. Anjali Wait what if I …. Shoot she’s gone; well we better get going before my time runs out! Thus he was in a most wretched state and had turned to the bottle in order to drown his sorrows. Lights on [Music: Tadap Tadap] Raj with shawl drinking alcohol (Devdas) Queen Son what has happened to you beta, you never used to drink so much… Raj (corny, Bollywood) Mother you do not know the anguish of a man in love. King (to wife, humored) Do you hear this nonsense, till Friday he was too young to be tied down and now he is being tormented by love! Raj Laugh all you want dad but this time its serious, I cannot live without her. King All that is fine, I am not denying that you are in love. At least tell us her name? Raj (pause) That I can’t tell you. King (laughing, to wife) You believe this the boy is in love and doesn’t even know her name. Haha kids these days… Queen Don’t laugh at him please it’s not… Raj (overly dramatic) 14 Let him laugh mom let him laugh - what will his cruel heart know about love and its tortures! King I am sorry I might not know anything about love, but I do know if I loved someone I would try and find them and not sit down all day crying about it… anyway I have more important things to do, come (take away wife). Raj (turn to audience) Dad is right I should go and try to find her. Raj calls friend - Harsh Raj (On mobile phone) Yo Harsh come with me I need your help to find someone. Lights on [Music: Woh Ladki Hain Kahaan] Raj and Harsh find different girls to try on bangles in the audience One very hairy arm pops out from the closed curtains – Raj & Harsh pull out the hand – uncle runs away Raj & Harsh exit through Entry 1 15 Blackout 16 Lights on Finale Scene Narrator Finally, our young prince arrived at Anjali's house and knocked on the door... End song at Anjali’s house, Raj and Harsh knock on door, Monica opens door, Evil Stepmother and Ronica watch. Monica (super happy, adjusting hair) Oh hi Raj! How are you, I’m so glad you found my bangle I lost it at your party you know… Raj No I don’t think… Monica Here give it to me! (Too tight) Ummmmm haha! Funny thing I put on 20 pounds since Sunday night so it’s not fitting anymore… So why don’t we forget about this bangle… Ronica Hahaha! 20 pounds in 2 days… right… the bangle is actually mine Raj dear here let me try it (Too loose – to Monica) Look what you did! You stretched my bangle! Girls cat-fighting, Evil Stepmother tries to mediate. Raj sees Anjali in a corner. Raj What about you? Come; try this on your hand. Anjali comes out sheepishly and extends her hand and it fits perfectly. Raj (ecstatic) That’s it! It’s you - I knew it was you! Raj gets down on knees and holds Anjali’s hand Raj Anjali will you marry me?
