2009 Key Accomplishments
• Spearheaded a successful campaign that included a petition to remove the downtown post office from a list being
considered for closure. The petition received over 1,200 signatures.
• With the help of M Creative, DWSP launched a new Individual Donor campaign called 500 Strong which has raised more
than $30,000 of the $50,000 goal by June 2010.
• Completed the draft zoning overlay dubbed the “Winston Overlay”- which will be considered by property owners in 2010.
The purpose of the district is to encourage new development which is compatible with the existing urban form and character
of downtown Winston-Salem.
• Continued to service and administer the Meade Willis Loan Fund on behalf of the Downtown Winston-Salem
Foundation (DWSF) which has provided 23 loans to small business throughout downtown Winston-Salem. Total amount of
these loans is $1,195,422. To date, $719,211 in loan principal has been repaid.
• Produced the 4th annual Salute! NC Wine Festival with 32 wineries and an attendance over 7,500 people. The Salute NC
Wine Festival is a critical fundraising event for the DWSP, a top five business day for downtown merchants, further establishes downtown as a vibrant
destination, and promotes Winston-Salem as a premiere destination to enjoy NC wines.
• Produced the 12th Season of the Summer Music Series, which consisted of 32 events throughout the summer. The Summer Music Series is long
established as an important community resource that brings thousands to downtown parks and streets throughout the summer.
• Actively assisted dozens of potential small storefront businesses through the difficult process of considering downtown as a potential location to open
a business. This assistance is formally offered through the quarterly Downtown 101 classes and with extensive confidential consultations with DWSP
staff which have led to successful storefront openings in 2009.
• Continued to implement a far reaching public relations campaign on behalf of downtown which has included:
• Tuesday night “Big Eat” Restaurant Promotion; February “Big Winter Bash” promoting downtown commerce; 2009 “Nutz about Downtown”
• Managed integrated communications including print, web, special event, public relations and social media (Facebook, Twitter, Blog,
YouTube and LinkedIn) and launched a revamped www.dwsp.org website
• Provided consultation and logistical assistance to many groups who pursue event programming in downtown Winston-Salem.
• Fiscal agent for Movies on the Greenspot
• Continues to administer and coordinate the participation of hundreds of volunteers in monthly committee and network meetings which are the back-
bone of the organization.
