There always appears to be something in the way. Our lives are filled with situations, expectations, possessions and inhibitions that take up our time and interfere with our relationship with God. That‟s why I‟m always amazed by the unhesitating response of Simon, Andrew, John and James to Jesus‟ call as depicted in Matthew‟s Gospel. They were with their boats and nets when Jesus came by and called them to follow him. As fishermen, these were essential for them to earn a living. Although not enough to make them wealthy, it was what put food on the table for them and their families. When Jesus called, they quickly left their nets behind and followed him, leaving behind not only their possessions and their livelihood but all those things that entangled them and had kept them away from God. The scene on the beach was probably quite idyllic. I can picture the men in their boats just off shore. The water is still and it‟s a warm Mediterranean day, with a sunny, blue sky and just the hint of a breeze. As Jesus approaches the waters edge he calls out first to Simon and Andrew. They immediately drop their nets and plunge into the water, swimming to shore. I can imagine that there was joy in their faces as they stood next to Jesus. Perhaps even a bit of good-natured fun as they reveled in the fellowship with each other and with Jesus. John and James were called in a similar way, and they left behind their nets, their father and their former lives. They joined this widening circle of fellowship full of joy and expectation. Believe it or not, Jesus is also calling each one of us, in the same way he called Simon and Andrew, John and James. He is calling and inviting us to join his circle of fellowship. He is calling us to leave behind those things that are interfering with an intimate relationship with God. What is it that keeps us back? What is it in our lives that prevents us from joining Jesus and experiencing the joy that a relationship with him brings? A relationship? Our possessions? Our self-image? Our life situation? We need to identify those obstacles and let them go. We need to make the time for Jesus in our lives. Jesus is calling us into a relationship. He is asking us to join him in fellowship with others to help spread the Good News. He is asking for our help in setting ourselves free and in establishing a kingdom of justice and mercy. Christ is counting on us…on you and me. How will we respond? Blessings, Fr. Chris+ ******************************************************************** Taizé The Taizé community is an ecumenical monastic order with a strong devotion to peace and justice through prayer and meditation. The 100-strong community of Roman Catholic and Protestant monks is drawn from 30 countries across the world. It was founded in 1940 by Roger Louis Schutz-Marsauche (known as 'Brother Roger'). Today, Taizé is one of the world's most important sites of Christian pilgrimage. Each year tens of thousands of young pilgrims flock to the small village of Taizé in central France to share in the community's way of life. Prayer and silence are at the heart of the Taizé experience. Young people from every corner of the globe are encouraged to live out the Christian gospel in a spirit of joy, simplicity and reconciliation. Ecumenism (a movement promoting Christian unity among Churches) is the key to Taizé's appeal, making it a magnet for people of many different cultures and traditions. Taizé has spawned a unique style of worship that has become popular in churches, retreat centers and seminaries throughout the world. The singing of distinctive and much-repeated prayer chants during candlelit prayer services is one of its trademarks. Taizé music highlights simple phrases, usually lines from the Psalms or other pieces of scripture, repeated or sung in canon. The repetition is designed to help meditation and prayer. Taizé worship includes candlelight, prayers, readings, silence, and soft music with repetitive words led by keyboard and flute, or violin, and other instruments. The service is very meditative and offers a wonderful opportunity to be silent and center on The Lord. Come as you are -- and listen. We will be having a Taizé Service at 6 pm on Sunday, November 1st in St. Nicholas Chapel led by Mr. Tylan Creason, Chaplain to Bishop Wolf. ************************************** *****The Heart of Worship ~ Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 5 pm***** Join us on the second Saturday of each month @ 5 pm in the St. Nicholas Chapel for an Ancient-Future Eucharist. Return to the symbolism and simplicity of the early church. Come and drink from the well. Fr. Chris 2 Some people ask, "How are we supposed to pray?" Other people ask - more correctly, I think - "How do you pray?” Prayer, you see, is a very personal part of spiritual development. It changes as we change. It deepens as we grow. It simplifies as we do as the years go by. Prayer centers us and stretches us and lays us bare, as the prayer says, "of all our self-conceits." Inside ourselves, we know who we are and what we need and what we lack and what we don't understand and what we long for as we go. It is this awareness and the dependence on God it brings with it that are the wellspring of prayer. Prayer is the awareness that it is not a question of whether or not God is present to us - that we can take for granted; instead prayer is the process of our becoming present to God. So, real prayer can be fed by any one of a number of things - scripture, nature, personal experience, emotional pressures, intellectual commitment to the God who is greater than any idea of God we can possibly have. But whatever the life-link that brings us into consciousness of God, in the end, the way we each pray has something to do with who we are. In my Own Words -Joan Chittister ************************************** We will have an Episcopal Charity Speaker, The Rev. Austin Almon, III, retired Deacon, on November 8th. In the Parish Hall, you can find a drawing of our Master Landscape Plan, as well as a time line for the work to be done. This project developed because it became increasingly apparent that there was, indeed, no plan for the property. A bush here, a small tree there, and various hedges that didn‟t accomplish their purpose inspired several of us to pull a plan together. Over the summer we studied ways to improve the property. We consulted with experts in the landscaping field as well as experts in the way our parish functions - the heads of all sorts of committees. 6 Our goals are: * To give a cohesive look to the property, coordinate with the Memorial Garden and Wilcox Park, and showcase our landmark building. * To have the property be easily maintained and to use existing plant material where appropriate. * To allow for a variety of church activities and uses and be as accessible and accommodating as possible. More than one of our experts noted that our church is an architectural treasure and can “stand alone”, meaning that it does not need horticultural embellishment. The answer, they agreed, was to have the grass grow right up to the foundation, as is done with English cathedrals. Salisbury and St. Alban‟s Cathedrals are examples. In fact, over 100 years ago that is the way Christ Church looked without bushes hiding our beautiful granite foundation. Most of our advisors from church activities wanted plenty of open, grassy area for various church activities. One creative person suggested we could use the open space for tents for receptions, etc. There are also people who would like to have a labyrinth and we‟ve made space for that. Many people would like to see a space with benches and plantings for rest or meditation, and that‟s there, too. This fall we have removed all the bushes around the Church‟s foundation and the new grass is growing there. The bushes we could save have been moved to their new locations. An area by the front sidewalk has been dug and enriched in preparation for spring planting of a mixed border. Tree pruning will be scheduled for winter. Winter will be spent, as well, planning for an ambitious spring work program. We welcome your comments, your energy, and of course your time. Anne Eaton, tel: 860-535-8577 SEPTEMBER VESTRY NOTES Fr. A number of people have asked how the Diocesan Apportionment is handled in this expense breakdown. The answer follows: This year's payment will total $65,592. The Diocese spends 25% of their income on pastoral care, 40% on outreach, 11% on evangelism, and 24% on administration. These percentages were used to allocate our Diocesan Apportionment payment to our expense categories below. (25% of our payment is included in pastoral care, 40% in outreach, 11% in evangelism, and 24% in administration.) The breakdown of how our money is spent, including the Apportionment payment, is shown below. ALL WELCOME **************************************************************************************** The Rev. Kate Heichler is pastor at the Church of Christ the Healer (Episcopal) in Stamford and is president of the InterFaith Council of Southwestern Connecticut. She is also chair of the Companions in Mission Committee in the Diocese of Connecticut. Last year, she started a ministry providing spiritual care and healing to people who are homeless and struggling in Stamford‟s South End. Kate is a writer, speaker, retreat leader, musician and singer, and in earlier life, a playwright. She holds MDiv and STM degrees from Yale Divinity School (where she studied with Chris and Elisabeth), is a graduate of NYU, and is studying for a Doctor of Ministry degree at Hartford Seminary. Kate has written and taught on healing for many years, and coordinated a healing ministry at Yale Divinity School during her time as a student there. "Healing prayer was an integral part of Jesus' ministry during his time on earth," she points out. "And Jesus is still in the business of healing - only now the body he uses is us, the Body of Christ in the world." She will talk about how healing prayer makes God's promises real for people in a way that conveys the Good News of God's love very immediately - sometimes more effectively than talking about it can. She will offer specific ways we can easily and naturally integrate this kind of prayer into our own lives and families, and will co-lead a healing service with Fr. Chris in which everyone can participate. 8 FROM THE STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE: By the time you read this, the Stewardship kick-off (10/17 & 18) and Intent weekend (10/24 & 25) will be over and the follow-up work will be beginning! If you have not had an opportunity to return your Intent to Give Form, they can be turned in at any service, left in the office or mailed to the church. We are hoping to reach a goal of $312,000; wouldn‟t it be great to NOT have a deficit this year? There are so many wonderful ministries filling many needs for our Parish families and communities and they all need our financial support and assistance to continue their work. If you have not received your Intent to Give form, please contact the office and be sure they have your correct mailing address; or pick one up in the Narthex on Saturday night or Sunday morning. (They are also available in the office during the week.) The materials cost is approximately $1000.00 and this dinner will be the major fundraiser for his project. Please support Andrew as he works to attain the rank of Eagle Scout, enjoy a delicious meal and help get a new shed for CC! Hello, My name is Andrew Hall. For the past 11 years I have been in scouting. I worked my way up starting at the bottom as a Tiger Cub Scout. As I grew I faced many challenges that attempted to split me from my scouting path. But after the scouting pack broke up, I found myself in a stable Boy Scout troop, Troop 10 of Westerly. I worked my way through the ranks including Tenderfoot, 2 nd class, 1st class, Star and now I am a Life Scout working on the last leg of my scouting career, Eagle Scout, an achievement that only 2% of scouts that start actually achieve. One of the requirements for Eagle Scout is to complete a leadership service project. For my particular project, I have chosen to build a gable-roofed shed for Christ Church, which my family has been a part of for many years. The church will benefit from my project due to the fact that the current outdoor storage is inadequate. Upon completion of the project, the church will have the appropriate outdoor storage to properly take care of the landscaping needs. My project will be to build a utility shed. The shed I am building is a 8‟ by 12‟ gable-roofed shed. Along with building the shed, my project includes gathering all necessary supplies. On the evening of November 3 rd, I will be hosting a BBQ dinner with the help of the Men‟s Club. The dinner will be catered by Chester‟s BBQ of Groton, CT.
