Brief Description of Proposed Project
Electronic Database of resource information for each county in the Crossroads region to possibly be added to the Crossroads web site. From the early 1930's until the early 1960's, Jackson County, Arkansas was the hub of a unique musical heritage often called Rockabilly. The center of the Rockabilly explosion was a club in Newport called the Silver Moon. National artists like Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison played at the Silver Moon and the cultural threads of Rockabilly can be seen in their music. The project is to build a replica of the Silver Moon in Newport, Arkansas and create the only Rockabilly Music Museum. The concept includes a building that is an exact replica with a museum, a 1940's era diner and a small auditorium for live expressions of the Rockabilly heritage. Two Sun Recording artists from the Rockabilly era, Sonny Burgess and Billy Lee Riley still live in Newport. The planning involved in construction, research, funding, operational plans, site location, etc. would require a number of student disciplines. This would be a multi-year project. Because there is very little money to restore this 105-year old school, the New Hope School Restoration Project needs student volunteers to interview former students, teachers and current neighbors of the school, and research courthouse and library records for any information pertaining to the school. Some manual work must be done as the restoration process moves along. When the store/welcome center opens, computer-generated decorating ideas will be needed. A building that was once the home of General Cable Corp. sits empty in Newport. It is adjacent to ASU Newport. The building is the only vacant industrial building left in Newport. The project would explore the feasibility of converting the building into a small manufacturing incubator as a joint project with the Newport Economic Development Commission and ASU Newport. Actions steps would include, funding for the purchase and renovation of the building, research on the most effective way to operate the incubator, design plans for the interior and exterior renovation, suggested ways of securing an operating budget, suggested infrastructure improvements to the building, and a proposal for the sharing of joint office space/staff. A running video series showcasing the people, places, and events of the Sunken Lands area. Mapping the location of the "Lost Communities" and printing the maps to be used in the exhibit. Locations of all fire hydrants in the City of Marked Tree marked on a map. Also the shortest routes to schools, industrial park, nursing center, ASU Tech, etc. How can buildings in downtown Harrisburg best be used to bring business and tourism into the area? Brochure/Map of possible tour routes in the Sunken Lands Area - mainly surrounding Marked Tree, Lepanto, Tyronza and Dyess. Incorporate local attractions in the area. Create possible "Passport" guide to all area attractions and agritourism sites.
Collection of oral histories for our "Lost Communities" project.
Create a virtual tour of the museum for our website. It is the belief that the performing arts can be used in the Crossroads Region to enhance economic development as it has in other parts of the country such as the Swamp Gravy play in Colquett, Ga. The Ken Theatre Performing Arts Center located in Woodruff County could be a place to help make this happen. Student involvement could be used to figure out ways to promote the arts in The Delta and more specifically find ways to fund it. Research grants available, ways to locate sponsors or other funding sources that could be used help promote artist and bring in outside artistic acts to the region. The City of Augusta was recently donated several acres of land by the Bunge Corporation to be used as a green area and park. The City has also obtained a grant through the Arkansas Forestry Commission to help pay for expenses for a SEED Project. The Project would include such things as landscaping, unique tree patterns, natural walking trails, and other imaginative greening programs. This would be a tremendous asset to our city and would also set an example for other cities that wish to go green and use SEED Projects to expand and grow. Provide key data input to assist homeless mothers with children.
Plan support group to promote family unity.
Assist children twelve years and under in transitional processing.
Community involvement in gardening and beautifying program data input to promote family housing.
Data input to promote family housing for homeless mothers with children.
Educate homeless mothers with children through governmental input services. Absence of public transportation is a universal problem in rural communities. As gasoline prices soar, everyone feels the impact but rural residents bear a disproportionate share of the cost. A recent survey found that in the past two months urban residents have been able to reduce gas consumption by 15% by taking public transit. This project asks students to look at how other rural communities and regions had addressed this issue, and develop some proposals for the Crossroads region. What would a transit system look like here? What are some considerations? What kind of system could address the needs of a sufficient number of people to be cost-effective? Students would be encouraged to seek out the advice of experts and develop creative ideas building on the unique qualities of the region.
Crossroads Coalition counties have a long tradition of sport tourism, from golf to duck hunting to trophy fishing. Students could prepare an online guide to sports tourism in the region. The guide could include information on sites, such as golf courses or wildlife conservation areas; resources such as guides or print materials; requirements such as licenses or access restrictions; photographs; interviews/personal narratives; and other areas of interest to tourists, either local or out of state. Crossroads Coalition counties have dozens of fairs and festivals each year that provide an important opportunity both for community building and regional tourism. This project would include creating an interactive map and/or searchable geography-based calendar with the dates and descriptions of all of the fairs and festivals in the 10 counties throughout the year. Crossroads Coalition has a large number of small museums that focus on a variety of topics: history, film making, education, Black history, tenant farmers, agriculture, dolls, southern culture, music, etc. Students could create a comprehensive interactive map of the museums in the 10 counties. Clicking on a location marker would bring up a screen with information on the museum collection, admission fees, and hours. Crossroads Coalition has a large number of small museums that focus on a variety of topics: history, film making, education, Black history, tenant farmers, agriculture, dolls, southern culture, music, etc. Students could create and map several museum tours that visitors might want to take. Tours might focus on themes, such as the Civil War or Blues Music, geographical considerations, or other rationales. Maps and descriptions suitable for use online could be developed. Research indicates that not only do most Coalition residents want their children to live in the region, but most students who leave to go to University and then pursue employment outside of Arkansas actually want to return to the region at some point. For this project, students would create a type of oral history, interviewing current students, University students who have left the area to pursue their education, residents who have returned after working out of state, etc. about what they like about their home towns and/or what they would like to see changed. They could then create a CD or online-based presentation of their results to present their ideas about how to encourage their peers to stay or return to the region. Students will fulfill selected requirements ( Arbor Day Celebration, tree inventory) of the national Tree City program for the City of Brinkley. Students will arrange, promote and provide support for a reception and public exhibition of student art work from the Advanced Placement Studio Art student. Ecotourism trayliners: Students will design trayliners (placemats) that follow a basic ‘3-3-3’ guideline – give information about 3 things to do when in your town/county, 3 places to eat and 3 places to stay. On one side of the liner points of interest will be highlighted. The other side will highlight something special our community offers, for example species of birds of interest to birders, pictures and addresses of antique stores, species of ducks, places to go, etc. These will be distributed to local restaurants. Interactive map highlighting community festivals: when people click on point on map, video or photos of local community events come up – Choo Choo Cha Boogie Music Festival, Brinkley Fall Fest, Tri-County Fair, Clarendon Birding Festival. Podcasts of Birding Trails: Students will create informational podcasts for people to download as they use local birding trails.
Podcasts/Virtual Tour of Brinkley Depot Museum: Students will create podcast of exhibits at the museum and create virtual reality tour of local museum. Students will analyze current school bus routes and map new bus routes to conserve fuel and improve student safety. Students will edit footage of school events into a school highlights program that will be run on the local public access channel. Students will locate and map the location of fire hydrants for use by volunteer fire department and for preparing community asset profiles and other reports. Students will copy and distribute copies of the student-made film ‘Bottomland Hardwoods: Unlike Any Other’ and supplemental educational material about the bottomland hardwoods. This video will also be linked to city website. Natural Heritage Commission Water Quality Monitoring – students will test water samples from local bodies of water on a regular basis throughout the year. Data will be shared with local, state and federal agencies. Project could be a part of the Benson Creek Restoration.Community Sponsor : Arkansas Game and Fish The Delta Model Community initiative will coordinate existing housing programs, planned community development, and new social models of holistic and intergenerational living to build a small community that embraces the gifts of maturity as well as the exuberance of youth, a community that instills positive life values and educates people of all stages of life through shared experiences and responsibilities. A key element of the Delta Model Community is vital public spaces. Students could explore ways in which the community could encourage development of small community stores and coffee shop/cyber cafes to create an atmosphere of arts and culture based on intergenerational experiences. The project would result in recommendations for a mix of businesses and cultural outlets that would serve the needs of all of the Model Community's residents. The Delta Model Community initiative will coordinate existing housing programs, planned community development, and new social models of holistic and intergenerational living to build a small community that embraces the gifts of maturity as well as the exuberance of youth, a community that instills positive life values and educates people of all stages of life through shared experiences and responsibilities. A Summit project could involve the alignment of local food production with community markets. Students could explore how Farmer's Markets, community gardens, home gardens, local farmers, and other food systems can work with local businesses and community organizations to provide high-quality foods at lower costs in the Model Community. A Summit project would focus on researching other sustainable communities considered suitable by the SFCCDC and develop a PowerPoint presentation that can be distributed on CD explaining the concepts of sustainable communities and the possibilities of the Delta Model Community.
A Summit project would focus on researching the demographics of the target residents of the Delta Model Community and developing a data-based profile to be used by model developers in other stages of the project. A Summit project would research lowincome, environmentally neutral, ‘Green’ housing alternatives and present options for a potential low-cost, low-impact but comfortable housing. A Summit project would research other aspects of environmental stewardship and prepare recommendations for ways in which the Delta Model Community could be environmentally responsible while providing high quality of life for residents. Based on information on currently available housing, needs of Forrest City downtown revitalization, and potential residents, students could explore possible siting for the Model Community, including maps of how to incorporate current land use and facilities with those needed to support the development of the Model Community. Marianna would like more areas where children can be active without the need for volunteers to supervise. There is no skate park here and only one playground for small children. There are two ball fields but no organized sports. Marianna needs to know where all the utilities are located and how they overlap. This is a safety issue and financial issue for the city. Marianna would like to map crime to locations, times and dates so appropriate officers could be assigned to necessary areas on certain days and times. Lee County has already completed its Centerline data inventory. There is now a need to coordinate that information with the assessor's office. Lee County needs to know what broad band capabilities are available and if not, how can we get them. Marianna would like a safer community by having a map of all fire hydrants and the size of the main servicing that hydrant. Lee County needs to know which entities have advanced technology available. The St. Francis National Forest and other organizations may have higher level technology such as GIS. If so, they might be able to use student interns to receive, develop and translate the data.
Lee County would like a healthier community. Many citizens, especially men, are not doing enough to prevent health problems. Knowing where resources are continues to be a problem for many Lee County Citizens. An awareness campaign might encourage those unengaged people to do a better job of taking care of themselves. An overlook has been constructed to view the MS River in Blytheville, AR. The area now needs to be landscaped. The Greyhound Bus Station in Blytheville has been renovated and will become a visitor's center. A project for this could be about what this bus station meant to the Delta area - how it is a part of music heritage (Blues bands traveled on that bus line). Also, how people came to live in this area, how they went to war and came back. This building could tell a story. The site of the former Eaker Air Force Base is a 700 year old archeological site that is a National Historic Landmark. The community would like for this site to become a national park to serve as a central point for tourism related to Native American archeological sites political science, law, anthropology, tourism, marketing, advertising, business, economics. The Delta Gateway Museum Commission is tentatively working with an ASU PhD student ( in Heritage Studies) to develop grant proposals to help fund the museum design and construction. A place where residents could take clothing, etc. where those that needed it could get it would be helpful to our community. Our City Park needs playground equipment for children We have a city park that has a pond. We would like a walking trail around the pond. We have a number of Spanish speaking people in our town and they would benefit from learning English. We have people that don't have vehicles and can't get around town, so we need a service to get people from their homes to the grocery store, etc. We need a recycling station for electronic equipment such as computers, faxes, cell phones, etc. We would like to create a river walk beside the river After school has closed for the regular school year, provide programs in each local church where underage children are read to by older children. This project could be funded in part or in whole by some type of grant program and sponsored by the Arkansas Library system along with the local public library. Where there is no local public library, establishment of a public library should be included in the plans for the Read to the Children Summer Project. Create a program that provides a work experience for high school students such as to work a number of hours per week in the office of the mayor (City Hall) doing administrative work and receive a grade or some form of academic credit and monetary compensation. This same program could be duplicated for non-government business and industry work experience to include medical/dental offices, etc. Create and implement strategic plan to convert hospital building at 500 S New York Street, Brinkley, into a city managed library and (IT) technology center. Create plan to implement layout for soccer field(s) at the Marian Anderson High School park.
Create plans for city-wide youth leadership program to involve youth in all facets of city government, i.e., city council, advertising and promotions, parks and recreation, planning, etc. Create plans to establish a community food bank for community families with children and for all residents during emergencies and disasters. Create strategic plan to implement a visual and performing arts program in the City of Brinkley, by April, 2009. Create strategic plan to locate a boys and girls' club within the City of Brinkley. Develop plans and specifications to landscape the old hospital grounds in the 500 block of south New York Street, Brinkley. Establish feasibility and strategic plans for a community garden project to teach children and adults how to grow and preserve foods. Find plots of land throughout the city that are overgrown with wild vegetation. Cultivate and plant crops on these plots of land. Explore means of creating a forestry program in the City of Brinkley for students of the local school system. Study feasibility and create plans to establish a community clothes closet where children may be furnished clothing including shoes, as needed and for any residents) when there is an emergency. Prepare a booklet (electronic or print) that answers the frequently asked questions that newcomers or potential newcomers would need to know prior to moving to community such as school locations, school calendar, utility connections, garbage collection days, voter registration, medical services, etc. Prepare a document that describes in detail how to set up, organize and operate a farmers' market in a community. Research the successful operating markets in the state and make available a contact list of references and sites that could be visited. Prepare a map showing the location of all old and/or abandoned cemeteries in the county. Make available to genealogical organizations. How to make use of vacant spaces in downtown Wynne or any other failing downtown area in the Coalition region. Create plans for summer camp for children ages 6-12. In the summer camp program, older children 13-18 serve as counselors and also read to the children. Summer camp would provide activities such as fishing at Lake Greenlee; soccer, baseball, arts and crafts, tennis. Morning at the library, swimming. The children would swim at a private pool rented by the City of Brinkley two mornings per week. During camp, children would also be taught chess, swimming and water safety. This same cap would provide an obesity component. Create plan to establish funding of a Community Center of Excellence in the City of Brinkley. The plan should also include funding sources and standards of excellence. Additional funding is the main issue. portion of the funds are already available. Reconstruct old baseball field along with softball field (sports complex), community garden, and walking trail with pavilion and lights. Also develop workforce center, buy back. City of Cotton Plant AV. Com. domain and develop a website. Marianna has an industrial site that is not presented on the Marianna web site (Mariannaarkansas.org). We would like a virtual tour added to the site.
Goal: Increase effectiveness of existing community programs and/or events within the Crossroads Coalition region through deployment of trained community leaders by utilizing a region-wide database to identify and recruit individuals who have completed a community leadership training program.Student Job Description: The student is charged with assessments and communications that result in the linking of willing volunteers with appropriate community projects.
students’ primary resource will be two databases that The will initially be developed by the Crossroads Coalition: a) a database of contact information for all individuals within the region who have graduated or are currently enrolled in a community leadership training program, and b) a database of upcoming events and ongoing community development programs and contact information within the region. The student(s) will be expected to 1) refine the databases for correctness and completeness. 2) in coordination with CRC, draft and send letters introducing and explaining the project to both leadership trainees and sponsors of community projects/events, as well as describing the process for identifying volunteer availability and work neededThe student will be expected to complete Develop plans to remove the Louis Jordan home from its original site and relocate to a city property, restore the property for tourism, cultural and historic purposes. Identify and develop grants for these same purposes. The City of Wynne, AR, needs routes developed in order to operate our sanitation fleet most efficiently. A major need is the mapping of the garbage truck routes to make the best possible use of our manpower and equipment. Interview citizens of Cross County and document significant events and early history of the county. Project would help preserve our heritage. The Oral History project we propose is for the Cross County Museum & Archives. Our goal is to have an interactive touch-screen monitor to provide visitors to the Museum access to our extensive photo collection and oral histories (which need to be collected). Bus routes of school district will be analyzed for efficiency of operation.
Developing safety exit routes for senior high school campus; buildings and parking areas.
Development of a map for the golf course at Village Creek State Park.
Mapping of both rural and city water systems in Cross County and Wynne.
Study and recommendations of safe student crossing of Falls Blvd. near Wynne High School The New Hope School Restoration Project will need help in the facility restoration process relative to layout, utility routing, placement of furnishings, interior and exterior appearance, landscape, etc. Adopt the title of a song of the international father of rhythm and blues, Louis Jordan, as the theme for Brinkley: "Let the Good Times Roll." Brinkley is the home of the international icon, Louis Jordan. Brinkley has no commemorative signage that tells of Brinkley being the birth place of this legend. The old Henderson Cafe property has been renovated and is ready for acquisition. Develop and implement a plan to purchase the property and convert to a souvenir shop.
Downtown revitalization. The project originated in St. Francis County but it is equally valid anywhere in the Crossroads Coalition (Note: this is a project idea that was generated by Dr. John Alderson's Community Development class at EACC). New flood plain map for Woodruff County or city of Augusta New city street map showing historical and points of interest Develop a plan to get traffic from Memphis on Hwy 64 to stop and spend money through each community in the 10 county region. County line mapping to include roads, residences and voting boundaries. Create electronic storybooks or games for libraries to improve literacy. Cogbill Cemetery website needs to be built, containing location by section of each interment, enumeration in the line of graves, and identification of each burial. To begin this project, the cemetery will need to be surveyed, using the original survey made by Marguerite Burt, et al. (I have copies of that.) A continuation of the burials can be kept by the secretary at the Wynne City Hall (since she already does that.) Develop creative plans for utilization of vacant lots in downtown Wynne Downtown building facades need much help. Wynne does not belong to Main Street Arkansas, so that needs looking into. The Arkansas State University Math/Science Partnership will acquire the Jonesboro Army Reserve Facility on or before Sept., 2011. This project would initially design and, when the facility is acquired, build an Outdoor Classroom on the Army Reserve Facility grounds. this project would include the following components:1) butterfly/hummingbird garden2) small pond with fish/water plants/waterfall3) small outdoor amphitheater (for 40 - 50 people)4) endangered species garden (plants)5) bird houses and feeders6) bat houses7) platform/electricity for telescope viewing8) Solar System Scale Model9) "Posthenge"-Stonehenge Scale Model for viewing Analemmas, Eclipses, Equinoxes, & Solstices10) refurbishment of existing gazebo11) addition of sitting benches/chairs near gardens12) signage and informational markers To build a database for emergency response personnel. This would include all counties in the coalition and allow them to communicate better during an emergency to include: contact personnel; Shelter sites; Emergency vehicle to location (ambulance, fire, police, ..etc.); mapping of quickest response times, water lines, fire hydrants. A documentation of the plants and animals in the area, temperatures, water levels, rainfall, and humidly levels. Virtual Tour of Schools Virtual Tour of Tourist Attractions This project would be centered around a teen community center for the Cherry Valley, Vandale, Hickory Ridge, Wynne and Harrisburg areas. Possible location could be the old Vandale School. Encourage the community to help clean the environment (starting with the area directly in front of schools).
