TO: FROM: RE: Faculty and Professional Staff Cerise Oberman, Dean of Library & Information Services Short and Long-Term Computer Loan Program Are you currently working on a well-defined project that could be expedited through the use of a laptop computer? If so, please read on. A limited number of laptop computer systems are available for loan to faculty and professional staff for a period of up to a year. The computers may be used on campus, at home, or in remote locations. Short-Term Loans: No application form is required for a short-term loan--see the attached page for details on placing a request. Long-Term Loans: Complete the attached laptop loan application form, including a short description of your research project, and submit one copy to the Dean of Library and Information Services and one copy to your Dean. The request must clearly describe how the computer system will advance your research or scholarship. Short and Long-Term Laptop Loan Program Objectives The Laptop Loan Program is designed to allow Plattsburgh State faculty and professional staff to make use of computing equipment while presenting papers and conducting research away from campus. Eligibility Full-time and part-time faculty and professional staff are eligible to apply. Criteria Where the number of applications exceeds the number of available computers, applications will be evaluated on the following points: 1. the nature of the project, 2. the location(s) where the research or presentation is to take place, and 3. the previous loan history of the applicant. Equipment Pool The pool of available loan computers includes 17 Pentium-based laptops running Windows '95/Office '97. Eight of the Pentium laptops are available for long-term loan, and the balance are available for short-term loans. Long-term Loans (1 - 12 months) Long-term loans are assigned to support work being done on sabbatical projects. Long-term loan periods range from 1 to 12 months. Long-term loans require a formal application consisting of a completed application and a brief outline of the project to be undertaken. Applications should be submitted to the Dean of Library and Information Services, Feinberg Library. Applications for long-term laptop loans will be solicited in mid-May. Exceptional requests will be considered at other times on a case-by-case basis. Short-term Loans (up to 4 weeks) Short-term loans support conference and short-term research travel, covering terms of up to four weeks. Requests for short-term loans do not require a formal application: direct requests to Carol Bleaux (5642434) or Sandy Rasco (564-2222). Conditions The provision of a loan computer is not a guarantee of uninterrupted use. In case of a computer malfunction, the recipient of loan computer will be required promptly to contact the college (at 518-5642222) to arrange for repair or service. The recipient of a loan computer is expected to take all due precautions in protecting the machine from damage and theft. No unauthorized or unlicensed software is to be installed on a loan computer. Laptops must be returned to Feinberg Library, Room 219 on or before the closing date of the loan period. Rev.
