					Accessing reduced phosphorus: the ability of marine microbes to use reduced phosphorus
compounds

Abstract
As phosphorus often is a limiting nutrient, reduced phosphorus compounds have the
potential to be an important phosphorus source for marine microbes. Aerobic and
anaerobic heterotrophs and phototrophs enrichments were conducted using phosphite
(+3), hypophosphite (+1) or aminoethylphosphonate (+3) as the sole phosphorus source
and glucose, succinate or bicarbonate as the sole carbon source. Marine aerobic
heterotrophs that can use phosphite, hypophosphite and possibly AEP as their sole
phosphorus source were successfully isolated. These isolates were determined to be
within the g-proteobacteria using 16S rDNA. The isolates and environmental samples
were screened for the presence of 3 functional genes (phnJ, phnX, ptxD) which allow for
the use of reduce phosphorus compounds. Genes were successfully amplified from
several isolates which showed positive growth on phosphite and/or hypophosphite. This
study clearly shows that there are marine organisms that can use reduced phosphorus
compounds as their sole phosphorous source and that these organisms are easily cultured.
