    why do CatS
    gravitate to
    non-Cat people?
        Have you ever wondered why,
when you’re in a room full of people
and there’s a cat present, the cat
    invariably gravitates toward the non-
cat person in the room? Non-cat
people might think they are being
    targeted, especially if everyone else
in the room is a cat person and is try-
ing to get the cat’s attention.
So why do cats do this?
Cats are very sensitive to scents
and anxiety. So in a room full of
people, they will most likely gravitate
away from a person who is very afraid
of cats — a person who is demon-
    strating anxiety and releasing subtle

                                          muhoviCh
Dr. Kerry is a veterinarian in private practice, and a volunteer at CCS. She
is leading the monthly seminars we launched in February. If you haven’t been
to one yet, try to attend – Dr. Kerry is very knowledgeable and entertaining. We all
           learn a lot!
Dr. Kerry moved to Colorado in fifth grade, and is a self-proclaimed “huge cat fan” who
has wanted to work with cats since she was very little. She is also very interested in education
      – she has earned two bachelor’s degrees (psychology and biology), a master’s degree in public
     health, and then a DVM.
As a junior in vet school, she went to the old Cat Care on 11th Street for a week to observe the cats
and practice stress reduction techniques for feline patients. That week, among others elsewhere,
solidified her interest in behavior and preventive medicine. She worked at the Denver Dumb Friends
League for her first two years after graduation from veterinary school. As the Animal Behavior
Education Coordinator there, she taught animal sheltering professionals from all over the U.S. about
animal behavior so they could keep more animals in their forever homes.
After two years, the focus of the program was changing and she was ready for a change as well,
so she began teaching veterinary technician (animal nursing) students at Community College
of Denver. After 8 years of teaching at CCD, she found herself wanting to work with ani-
mals more than than full-time teaching allowed. Currently a veterinarian at Cherry Knolls
Veterinary Clinic in Centennial, Kerry enjoys a great combination of client education
opportunities, hands-on time with patients, and time with her family: 8½-year-old
son, Mark, named after a great cat lover, Mark Twain, and 5-year-old daugh-
ter, Tabby, named after one of her favorite cat types. Kerry has been a
CCS volunteer in various capacities since 2003.
“I love what CCS does for the cats of Denver and the
                                  people who love them!”
