East Midlands Six Monthly Report 1 August 2008 to 30 January 2009 1. Introduction 1.1      Purpose of 6 monthly report Used to brief the LOCOG Executive team and GEO. Used to brief the LOCOG and Olympic Boards on progress of the 12 Nations & Regions. Distributed to other Nations and Regions Coordinators to share ideas, best practice and progress. All guidance notes and examples are show in blue italics – please delete before submitting your report The report is split into 3 sections: o o o Executive Summary – One or two case studies that will “showcase” each outcome area from the last 6 months. Activity Summary – A more detailed summary of activities over the last 6 months, demonstrating for each outcome area how the activity is delivering against your objectives and how it is being measured. We will share a summary of this with LOCOG and the GOE to demonstrate our work is aligned with the overall 2012 objectives. Risks/Issues – Any risks and mitigating actions. 1.2  When does the report need to be completed by? All reports are due on Friday 30 January 2009. a6f67491-2406-46af-9cee-84e39e7291c3.doc09/11/2009 Page 1 of 13 2. Executive Summary 2.1 Economic “Added economic benefit across the UK from hosting the Games” Hosting the Games has enabled partners across the East Midlands to come together to focus on innovative sport-led projects that generate economic benefit for the region. A new £15m major sports cluster project (Sport Park) was launched at Loughborough University in October 2008. Jointly funded by Sport England, local authorities, the University and emda, SportPark will provide modern office accommodation for a variety of sporting organisations in a purpose built centre. The centre will encourage greater innovation, better sharing of good practice and access to specialist University sports services such as sports science support, sport research and the world renowned Sports Technology Institute 2.2 Social “Greater levels of engagement inspiration and participation across the UK, leading to social and community development” The East Midlands targeted its initial activities and media awareness campaign on programming five quality public celebrations for Handover Day on 24 August 2008 and for the launch of the Cultural Olympiad, the 26-28 September Open Weekend. Temporary outdoor screens in Leicester and Kettering, with a permanent screen in Derby and a young people’s festival in Nottingham, became the focus for a range of participatory sports, arts and music events which attracted audiences of over 70,000 and over 2,000 active participants. The Regional (Association of Colleges East Midlands) Sport Strategy Coordinator for FE felt there was scope to develop a regional brand to support, reward and promote the benefits of volunteering and leadership within FE. In partnership with emda and the ‘Championing the East Midlands’ brand, the FE Leadership & Volunteering Programme has been developed. The year on pilot has incorporated chosen AoC EM colleges from across the region. The pilot colleges will choose around 15 volunteers from their institute to be part of the programme. a6f67491-2406-46af-9cee-84e39e7291c3.doc09/11/2009 Page 2 of 13 These students will be the pioneers before the programme is rolled our regionally throughout all AoC FE establishments in the region. A strong barnd identity has been developed for the programme which will reflect the benefits of volunteering in a young, dynamic and appealing way to target the 16-19 age group. 2.3 Sporting “Increased levels of sporting participation and activity as a result of the Games” Hosting the Games has generated an increased focus across the region on marrying elite events with grassroots participation. Examples are Nottingham’s successful hosting of the FA Women’s Cup Final in 2007 and 2008 – the city staged a Festival of Football around the event to encourage women and girls to get involved in football. The event has been retained in the region and the 2009 event will take place in Derby, again with associated grassroots focus. There will be a similar focus on participation around the T20 World Cup matches (cricket) taking place at Trent Bridge, Nottingham in June 2009. 2.4 Communications and Engagement Visits by LOCOG executives to the region generate significant media interest for us. Visits by both Paul Deighton and Jonathon Edwards were well covered by all regional media outlets last year. Additional coverage was generated by handover activities for both Olympic and Paralympic Games – the latter focusing on the launch of the education programme. In December we generated significant radio and newspaper coverage from our Children’s Promise photocall in Derby. a6f67491-2406-46af-9cee-84e39e7291c3.doc09/11/2009 Page 3 of 13 3.
