Course objectives:
1. Understand the development, morphology, physiology, biochemistry, and immunology of the mammary gland of many representative species!!!!!!!
2. Understand chemical & biological properties and functional importance of lacteal secretions, and milk synthesis and secretion. 3. Contemporary issues assoc. with lactation
4. Have fun while learning! Interactive!

PROJECTS:
1. 5 page paper on any aspect of lactation in any species but dairy cattle. Paper must contain 5 references. • Paper due date :March 13, 2009 (midnight)! • Topics due to me by: February 6, 2009 “(in person)” • 20% of grade: 1-2 minute oral presentation!
CLASS SCHEDULE
• Magical minutes of mammals * 1-2 minute oral presentation * highlights from your paper * Formal presentation (powerpoints) 7: 1st 10-12 min of class: during late March-April (A-Z)
PROJECTS:
2. Lactation ethics discussions/ debates: Students will be assigned to groups of 6-8. Two groups will be assigned to each topic ( one pro / one con).
EACH GROUP • 2 page position paper (bullets /ref) Due 4/23 • 5-8 minute oral presentation (everyone)* • Q and A* * (final exam slot)
Exams:
• 3 exams • February 12 • March 31 • April 23 • not comprehensive
• review sessions night before exam 7 pm 108 K •
Quizzes: Eight (8) (see syllabus) (drop one)
Grading/evaluation:
• Total course is worth 600 points: - Exams: 100 points apiece or 300 points. - Paper: 125 points (20% oral – 25 pt.) - Ethics: 100 points (70% group, 30% ind.) - Quizzes: 75 or more points • Extra credit ditties! • Class participation: PRICELESS! ( But worth points!)
** EXTRA CREDIT **
• Multiple problems/ searches over the semester (5-6) - you will work but you will learn! - will help on exams and grades!
• Current events in mammals / lactation -bring to class or send to me for discussion (won’t discuss them all)
