                             Summer Reading 2012

All Middle School students will read three books this summer:
       1. Wonder by R.J. Palacio: This is an all-Middle School summer reading book. In
August, the entire Middle School will participate in activities and discussions about
Wonder. We will even have a Skype visit with author R.J. Palacio!
       2. One book by visiting author Gary Schmidt. (See grade lists for titles.)
       3. One book from your grade level choice list.

Ebooks on Follett Shelf and Follett Digital Reader App
Any summer reading book that has an asterisk (*) next to its title is available to you as an ebook
through Follett Shelf on your computer or Follett Digital Reader on your iPad or Android tablet.
You can access our ebook collection at any time from any computer, iPad, or Android tablet with
an internet connection. When you check out an ebook, you will have access to it for three weeks.

Follett Shelf on your computer:
1. Open any internet browser (Safari, Firefox, Chrome, etc.). Turn off the pop-up blocker. This
is very important because you will not be able to read an ebook if the pop-up blocker is on.
2. Go to the following URL:
3. You will see the log in screen. Log in using your school username and password from the
2011-2012 school year.
4. You will now be directed to the CA MS Library Ebook homepage where you can browse the
available titles. When you find a book you want to read, check to see if it is “IN” or “OUT”. You
can only read books that are available on the ebookshelf at the time you log in, just like you can
only check out a book that is available on the actual library shelf. Click on the title you’d like to
check out; then click “Online” just below “Check out.” Now you can read your ebook!

Follett Digital Reader on your iPad or Android tablet:
1. Go to your app store, and download the free Follett Digital Reader app.
2. When you open the app, type the following in the URL box: wbb03401.
3. Type in your username and password from the 2011-2012 school year.
4. Click on “Check out more ebooks.” This will bring you to the Follett Shelf site. Check out a
book as in #4 above. That book will then appear on the Follett Digital Reader screen under “My
Online Ebooks.” Click on the title to read your ebook.

                                  Happy Summer Reading
from the Middle School Language Arts Department!
                    SUMMER READING 2012 – Entering Grade 6

For your summer reading, you will read three books:

       *Okay for Now,*The Wednesday Wars
       3. One book from the list below.

For the Gary Schmidt book and the choice book from the list below, choose a title that you
have not read previously.

After you have read each book, make one note card with the following information:
At the top of the note card, write the title of the book with the author’s name.
Main characters: List three to four main characters and their roles in the book.
Themes: List themes under which the book might be filed in the library or on a web site.
Plot: In three to five sentences, write a summary of the story, including the problem and how the
problem is resolved.
On the back, write a review: What did you think of this book and why?
Your name: Write your name on the card.

Keep your work to one note card, and save each card for August. You will bring these to school to
