The common cold and the flu are both caused by viruses. Although colds and the flu have some of the same symptoms, colds are generally milder than the flu. Colds may start slowly with mild exhaustion, a cough, no fever (or a mild one), and your baby may have a normal appetite. The flu can begin suddenly with a high fever, severe exhaustion, a dry, hacking cough, and your baby may have a decreased appetite. Whether your baby has a fever caused by a cold or the flu, you’ll want to know how to handle it! fevers If your little snow bunny starts to shiver or feel hot, it’s time to take your baby’s temperature with a thermometer. There are two thermometer options for children under 3 years — rectal or tympanic (ear). Of the two, rectal is generally considered the more reliable way to take a child’s temperature. soothe your little one When your baby is sick, always follow the advice of your pediatrician first. Here are some simple ways to comfort your sick baby. + Apply a cool washcloth. Cool your baby’s skin gently to help bring a fever down. + Give a bath in warm, not cool water. The bath water will absorb your baby’s body heat and will help cool your baby’s skin. + Keep your baby comfortably dressed. Don’t over layer your baby’s clothing. Keep your baby warm but not hot. + Keep your baby hydrated. Make sure your baby takes a sip of liquid as often as possible to keep from getting dehydrated. + Reassure your baby.
