The NM team works across the borough by involving local people in identifying and helping to tackle neighbourhood issues and problems. The work is delivered in parnership with public, private and voluntary sectors. A major thrust involves enabling local people to inform how service providers can help improve their services and contribute to improving the quality of life for local people. The team works as an enabling team and not always with an intensive classic community The development approach. Target groups vary neighbourhood depending on the nature of the work. Outcomes management team - Gateshead include: providing new community facilities, reducing localised levels of crime and Council disorder, imrpving the appearance/usability of local pieces of land etc. There is a plethora of techniques/partnerships involved - tenants and residents groups/associations, 4 community partnerships, community associations, special interest groups eg neighbourhood watch, Friends of ...., specific "Planning for Real" exercises in Birtley and Felling, working with local groups to gain funding /manage facilities eg Chopwell Pioneer Centre Management Committee Baby changing mat annotated with services/ agencies that young women may wish to access. Am now refining the learning from this with CNAs and Gateshead College to prepare 5 sessions of 1 hour 15 mins of recipes and have plans to test out in Springwell from 11th Sept with the college doing the food demonstrating and the CNAs giving the health eating advice to supplement the recipes. Will seek to establish before and after scope of what F & V they eat and the value to them of each recipe, what equipment the have/lack etc started by HCC with local surgery now run completely by the surgery flu jabs for everyone children and workers come early am or after about 3pm 10-2pm for older people. Has built year on year from 150 to about 400 per year. People welcome having the jab away from the surgery and a chance to see old friends. Stall and info including HCC, CHDT, forum older people, trading standards, anchor staying put, crossroads & carers alzheimers etc

Fit to feast

5 week course for older people linking easy exercise to eating. 2 hours per week; 1st week assessment eg BMI BP etc Taught chair based exercises that they can do at home throughout the 5 weeks and beyond. Also 1 hour healthy eating and tasting session provided by CNAs includes their regular session re salt sugar, 5 a day, cooking for 1 how to read labels. Approx 12 people per 5 weeks. These are popular and appear a good way to get the messages over, understanding food labels is important info for this age group and causes much interest. Organised and funded by HCC costs only include room hire approx £10/hour and food costs approx £5-10 pper session. Session works well because there is a specific focus to each session and lively debate and ideas sharing are encouraged not just info giving sessions.

Families for 5 a day

Initial work undertaken in Chopwell to ascertain what might encourage parents with young children to eat 5 a day of fruit and veg. Investigated what people currently eat, the range of F & V taken and then over 5 weeks showed them how to prepare and cook simple recipes to extend their repertoire of meals that they can cook. Also used this to build social capital by bringing this group together and promoting other groups locally for parents and toddlers etc. key finding people need to see things prepared and made, taste it and be given the recipe. Recipes alone did not get people cooking at home. Positively evaluated and the learning from this has been developed into a 5 week course with CNAs and Gateshead college cooking skills dept. next 5 week course starts 11th sept in Springwell. Based on the learning from this further courses will be set up.

1) For forthcoming work we hope that one outcome measure will be that parents go on to take up free cooking courses offered by n/c Gateshead College. 2) Increase in the range of F & V eaten & confidence in cooking new recipes

Birtley Villas & Lansbury Drive lunch clubs for older people

A once a week lunch club in each venue set up (inc start up costs) funded by the HCC but managed and run by the older people themselves, residents of the sheltered housing and other older people who live near by get together once a week for a meal. They decide the (healthy) menu for the following week and meet up socially whilst sheltered housing warden and home care coo the meal. This saves Home care time as it prevents the need for MOW and Home care cooking for individual residents. All food purchased nearby boosting the local economy.

Home care staff very pleased with it and staff able to vocalise the positive Empowerment of older impact that this had had on older people to organise & run - frail people with poor appetites. n/c not a service for them Lansbury drive started as a soup club at the request of the residents but have now extended to full meals. They residents have also used club funds to buy a new freezer.

Set up following the success of the Whickham club based at Highfield community centre once a week lunch club 10.30-1.30 for local people with dementia ( attendees selected by older peoples mental health team generally those who are do not yet need full day care or who are unwilling to access a large day centre for people with dementia often used as a stepping stone to day care. Approx 6-8 people with dementia and volunteers who meet socially and choose next Supported Lunch weeks menu/ have fun etc and home care staff club for people who cook the food all supported and supervised with dementia by older people mental health. Set up and Highfield currently funded by Highfield Healthy communities collab. Volunteers have received a training package from mental health and a food hygiene course. Current funding via HCC includes room hire, transport and volunteer food costs. however this cannot be maintained in the longer term so we are looking to establish the group as an association ( through partnership office and economic development) so that they can apply for charitable grants etc Recently built in the grounds of the community centre. Led by the local church group and development undertaken as a direct result of the visit of NE1 (a local church event for youth groups world wide). Funding obtained from many different sources to complete the garden including HCC. Transformed waste ground into a play area for toddlers a sitting area for adults and raised vegetable beds etc for the youth group to cultivate Since starting my support work with the forum at the end of last year, it is clear that forum members were interested not only in listening to local people's views on health and social care issues but in helping them to voice them. At the moment I am working with the forum members to build links with Gateshead Carer's association with the view to further promoting the voice of carers in health and social care provision.
