Inspired to honor deaf women During the 6th National Deaf Women United Conference in Rochester (July 1997), participants were treated to a field trip to the National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, New York, where they viewed the biographies of important women who contributed to American society. In addition, there was a Wall of Frame for women who contributed to their local communities. Inspired by this concept, DWU is sponsoring a Deaf Women’s Hall of Fame As part of our mission to encourage leadership and empowerment, DWU has developed two distinctive awards to honor Deaf women. We support the need for Deaf and hard of hearing women to be recognized for the selfless contributions they make to families, friends, the Deaf community and to each other. DEAF WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT An Award to be given to one Deaf or hard of hearing woman who contributed significantly to the Deaf community and Deaf women; WALL OF HONORS An award established for women to be honored by their spouses, family and friends for their contributions. This award can be used as a gift to honor a special Deaf or hard of hearing woman for personal or professional reasons (i.e., a wedding or anniversary gift from spouse, a Mother’s Day gift from child, a gift from the boss to a staff member, etc.). Your co-worker, friend or a family member will also be honored to receive a special award of recognition. Don’t hesitate to give recognition to that special Deaf woman! Box 152795, Austin, TX 78715-2795 Website: www.dwu.org E-mail: board@dwu.org SELECTION PROCESS AND BENEFITS FOR THE AWARDS DEAF WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT (nominating criteria): · the nominating party must be a Deaf or hard of hearing woman · anyone may submit a nomination · nomination must be submitted six (6) months before the DWU conference. No forms will be considered past the deadline date · there is no limit on the number of times a Deaf woman may be nominated · the DWU Board will select one recipient prior to each biennial conference · announcement of a selected Deaf woman will be made at every DWU conference Benefits: Two years of DWU membership, with all the benefits of a regular member-registration fee waived at the next DWU conference, an 8”x10” engraved plaque for the recipient, paper copy of the plaque for the archives, and to be displayed at the biennial conferences, 5”x7” picture with the recipients complete accomplishmenthistory to also be included in the archives and to be displayed at the biennial conferences. WALL OF HONORS (nominating criteria): · anyone can send an entry form for a selected Deaf or hard of hearing woman · a fee of $50.00 will be required to process the nomination · there is a no deadline for submitting forms, however, in order to be placed on the Wall of Honors before the next biennial conference, entries must be submitted three months prior to the date of the conference Benefits: A commemorative plaque (approximately 5”x7” or 4”x6”) for the recipient, an engraved nameplate to be placed on the Wall of Honors, a list of accomplishments to be printed in the Wall of Honors book. First recipient to be honored, MARIE PHILIP for a lifetime of lasting contributions to the Deaf community.
