Twenty-Fourth Sunday In Ordinary Time St. Andrew by the Bay September 13, 2009 Dear Friends: Having been fed by our God in the Eucharist, there is always time in the mass for silent reflection, a place where we, as a community of believers can give thanks to our God for this incredible gift of life. This gift of Eucharist nourishes us and allows us to find the strength to continue walking the road of faith living lives of holiness. The beauty of our incarnate God is that God never asks us to do anything for which God does not provide the grace to see it through. The greatest source of God’s grace in our lives as Catholics is found in the celebration of the Eucharist. The concluding rites of the mass position us to be sent from this powerful prayer to continue to live our lives in relationship to Jesus first and foremost in our service to others. Every mass we are missioned with the words of the priest or deacon: “The mass is ended, go in peace to love and serve the Lord and one another.” But, it is hard to be missioned and to respond to this call if we are not present in the assembly of the faithful. If we have left mass before we hear these words of mission and before we respond to this commissioning with our sung prayer [the closing hymn], then we have missed out on an essential element of the mass. Being sent to put what we have received into concrete practice for others is at the heart of why we come to the feast prepared for us by God. If we are not changed in this experience of our living God to go and bear Christ to others, then our prayer has been in vain. It is in service to our neighbor that our faith bears much concrete fruit, and our service can come in the simplest of forms: a smile to a stranger, holding the door for someone, a kind word, listening to someone who is lonely or sad, reading a child a story, helping someone carry their groceries, cutting part of our neighbor’s lawn, baking a cake for a new neighbor, giving someone a ride to an appointment, sharing our favorite toy, sending birthday/anniversary greetings, and the list goes on. All of these interactions are ways for us to share the love of God that was first shared with us in our experience of the mass. What we have received, so we are to share with others. This gift of God’s love is never meant to be hoarded for our individual use; it is meant to be spread throughout our lives. Motivated by our relationship with Jesus, challenged to live for others as Jesus modeled, missioned to serve others in love, we become the living Body of Christ in our world. We literally become the presence of Christ for others. In these simple acts of service we become evangelizers in our world. This Sunday allow your prayer of the Eucharist to transform your lives as the living Spirit of God empowers you to bear Christ to someone in your life this week. St. Andrew, pray for us. Reflection The last verses of today’s Gospel offer a poignant challenge: “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it.” We all have a certain level of comfort in our lives. Too often we find ourselves holding on to that comfort, forgetting that the call to follow the Lord requires sacrifice on our part. We all make sacrifices when it comes to the needs of our families. Let’s remember that we are called to love God above all else, and ask for the strength to make other kinds of sacrifices in order to strengthen that love. What sacrifices can you make that will help you to love God above all else? This is an important question for parents: Who do you say that God is? What do your words and actions tell your children? A forgiving Father? A stern judge? A distant God who lives way off in heaven? An incarnate God who holds us in love every minute of our lives? Remember that, for good or ill, you paint your child‟s first picture of God. Catechetical Sunday On September 20 weekend, we will join with parishes throughout the country to celebrate Catechetical Sunday. This year‟s theme is “Catechesis and the Proclamation of the Word”. This is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, of handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday invites us to rededicate ourselves to this mission as a community of faith here at St. Andrew by the Bay. Respect Life Corner Health Care and the Common Good: In a recent British Catholic Journal an editorial titled “U.S. bishops must back Obama” claimed that America‟s bishops „have so far concentrated on a specifically Catholic issue-making sure state-funded health care does not include abortion-rather than the more general principle of the common good.” Archbishop Charles Chaput, O.F.M. Cap wrote the following in reference to the article,… No system that allows or helps fund – no matter how subtly or indirectly – the killing of unborn children, or discrimination against the elderly and persons with special needs, can bill itself as „common ground.‟ Doing so is a lie. Health-care reform is vital. That‟s why America‟s bishops have supported it so vigorously for decades. They still do. But fast-tracking a flawed, complex effort this fall, in the face of so many growing and serious concerns, is bad policy. It‟s not only imprudent; it‟s also dangerous. As Sioux City‟s Bishop R. Walker Nickless wrote last week, “no health-care reform is better than the wrong sort of health-care reform.” St. John Vianney Drama Save the Date!!! On Friday, October 9th, 2009, at 7:30pm, St. Andrew by the Bay will host St. Luke Productions one-man drama by Leonardo Defilippis, Vianney Cure` Maximillian Kolbe and St. Therese). This drama will not only have a significant impact on vocations but will bring about a renewal of holiness among the laity and all religious as well. This is a true story of a priest who converted an entire village and tens of thousands beyond. St. Andrew by the Bay parishioners are encouraged to help with this parish project. We need help in the way of publicity, tickets, set-up, take-down, ads, reception, etc. Please contact Maureen Stansell at 410-353-2910 or mstansell@verizon.net.
