DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER LIBRARY ABILENE, KANSAS
ADAMS, SHERMAN: Records, 1952-1959
Pre-Accession Processed by: JLH Date Completed: 1-69 The files of Sherman Adams, state and federal congressman, governor of New Hampshire, Assistant to President Dwight D. Eisenhower, were received at the Eisenhower Library in 1961 as an auxiliary collection to the White House Central Files. Linear feet: 16.4 Approximate number of items: 17,000 Approximate number of pages: 34,175 This file has been screened and documents have been removed that fell under restricted categories contained in the letter of Dwight D. Eisenhower to Franklin Floete, dated April 13, 1960. See Public Papers of the Presidents, Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1960-61, pp. 346352. Literary rights in the unpublished writings of Sherman Adams in these papers and in other collections of his papers in the custody of the Eisenhower Library have not been dedicated to the public. The correspondence in the files of Sherman Adams is cross referenced in the White House Central Files with the exception of the segments headed “Pre-Inaugural Files, 1952” and “Campaign Files, 1956.” The segment titled “Pre-Inaugural Files, 1952” was received at the Eisenhower Library as a part of the “oversize” or storage files of the White House Central Files and was with the pre-inaugural files of Dwight D. Eisenhower. The segment of Adams’ “Pre-Inaugural” papers was removed and incorporated into the Files of Sherman Adams.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Sherman Adams files cover the years 1952-1959, but the bulk of the material relates to the period when he was the Assistant to the President, 1953-58. Items included in these files consist of general and personal correspondence, speeches, press conferences by the President, 1956-1958, clippings, photographs, index card files and bound volumes of Sherman Adams’ appointment kept by his secretary, Mary Burns. Nearly one third of the collection consists of invitations sent to Adams by organizations, institutions and individuals. These invitations were extended from a variety of sources such as: embassies, governmental departments, and agencies, local, state, and national party leaders, private clubs, religious groups, personal friends and the general public. There are nine boxes of 3” x 5” index cards of the appointments and invitations of Sherman Adams kept by his secretary. Typically these cards contain names and hours of engagements, occasionally the party is further identified. They should be used in conjunction with the bound appointment books and the invitation files. Other significant portions of the files are the speeches delivered by Sherman Adams, 1952-1958, and a file of correspondence concerning the “Goldfine Case” involving Sherman Adams. The speech file includes letter-requests, arrangements, comments and expressions of appreciation as well as drafts and finished texts of addresses. The “Goldfine Case” correspondence is divided into pro and con opinion, and includes high level as well as general public expressions of opinion. Special files in the collection are the “Pre-Inaugural Files, 1952” and the “Campaign Files, 1956.” In the “Pre-Inaugural Files, 1952” there are several segments devoted to correspondence between Adams and state Republican Party leaders as well as the general public. “Campaign Files, 1956” is a file containing approximately 300 copies of letters addressed to Adams which he referred to the Republican National Committee.
