GENERAL INFORMATION
Signing in and out of the Office
If you need to sign your child out of the office for an appointment, please go to the office and sign the sign out sheet. Someone from the office will then call your child‟s teacher and alert them that you‟re waiting. Do not go directly to your child‟s classroom. Use the same procedures if you are signing your child in late.
Tardy
If your child is just a few minutes late to school, he/she can go to the office and get a tardy slip.
Oops box
If your child forgets his/her lunch or homework, there is a milk crate in the office, labeled “Oops Box” in which you can place it after school has started. Your child can check this box during his/her recess.
Lice Prevention
A proactive approach is the best way to control potential lice infestation in your household and on the school campus. Parents must check your child‟s head before they go back to school. Frequent checking throughout the school year will help prevent an outbreak. The following websites have more information about lice: From the Harvard School of Public Health http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/headlice.html
From the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) http://www.cdc.gov/lice/head/prevent.html What to do if your child has lice - Report the incident to the school office - Keep your child home until they are nit free OUSD policy is to notify families in classrooms where 2 incidents of lice have been reported.
CARPOOL INFORMATION
Everyone is Early Bird for first two weeks!
For the first two weeks of school, everyone is an early bird. This means that everyone should be dropped off at school between 7:40am and 8:00am (children arriving before 7:40am must check in to BASC), and picked up at 1:55pm, unless you have a Kindergartner, whose day ends at 11:30. During these first weeks, Teachers will assign children into smaller working groups, designated as either Early Birds or Late Birds. A note will be sent home with your child with their designation. The first day of Early/Late schedule is Tuesday, September 15. (Reminder: ALL CHILDREN ARE EARLY BIRDS ON MONDAYS THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR!) Children in grades 1 – 3 who are Early Birds go to school from 8:00 am to 1:55pm. Kindergartners who are Early Birds go to school from 8:00 am to 11:30 am. This time period does NOT include LUNCH. Children in grades 1 – 3 who are Late Birds go to school from 8:55 am to 2:50pm. Kindergartners who are Late Birds go to school from 8:55 to 12:55. This time period includes LUNCH. All 4tt and 5th graders go to school Tuesday – Friday 8:00am – 2:50pm, they do not have an early/late schedule.
Carpool Procedures
To ensure the safety of our children we ask that you follow these rules: Make a full STOP at all stop signs around the „Sleepy Hollow Loop‟ YIELD to pedestrians in the crosswalks Look around for children who may be walking or biking to school
The „Sleepy Hollow Loop‟ During pick-up and drop-off time, Sleepy Hollow Lane is a one-way loop. From Lombardy Lane, turn onto Tarry Lane and continue onto Sleepy Hollow Lane, turn right onto Washington Lane and proceed into the school parking lot. When exiting the parking lot, turn RIGHT onto Sleepy Hollow from Washington Lane. Morning Drop-Off Drive into the parking lot and proceed all the way forward and around the lower parking lot, stopping alongside the cars parked perpendicular to the office. Children exit the car on the right side and walk toward the office. There will be a teacher assisting with traffic flow. For safety reasons, children may not be dropped off in front of the chain link fence in front of the kindergarten classrooms. Wait until the cars in front have unloaded and pull all the way forward before allowing children to unload. Monday mornings are especially busy as everyone is an early bird that day. Cars typically line up down Washington Lane and not in the upper parking lot in the morning. Afternoon Pick-Up For EARLY carpool pickup (1:55 pm) which is EVERY MONDAY (due to Mondays being EARLY BIRD DAY) and for other days. When entering the parking lot at Sleepy Hollow school, make an immediate right and head up to the upper lot and follow the line of traffic. The first car will stop heading downhill at the corner, near the marquis and wait for the buses to depart. Once the buses move, the first car can move forward along the lower parking lot. It‟s important to have a sign with your child(ren)‟s name(s) displayed in the front window, so the teacher or staff member who is helping carpool can see the sign and call those to a specific “pole” to wait for their parent‟s car. Follow this same procedure for late carpool. NOTE: there is no late carpool on Mondays. For Kindergarteners ONLY: For early birds (those departing at 11:30) please drive to upper lot and the children will be waiting outside the music room with a teacher. For late birds (those departing at 12:55) please go directly to the lower parking lot. Usually there is not a long line, and you do not have to follow the line up and around the upper parking lot. If you are LATE, and miss the carpool, do not fear! Your child(ren) will be brought to Before/after school club, where they will be checked in and looked after until you arrive. You may park in the upper parking lot or the 10 minute parking space in order to run in and sign your child out of the B/ASC. Please follow these simple parking etiquette rules: Do NOT park in the “Volunteer” parking spot in the upper lot, closest to the music room.
Do NOT park in the “SHPCI President” parking spot, located next to room 17 portable in the lower parking lot Do NOT park in the parking spot designated for the parent who purchased this space at our Auction in March 2009

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Parent volunteers make the difference at Sleepy Hollow. Whether you work in the classroom, read in the library, help with hot lunch, or serve on a committee, there are many ways to get involved at Sleepy Hollow and all are valued and appreciated. We are a community who volunteers and it makes a difference in our children‟s education. If you haven‟t already, please take a minute to fill out the volunteer survey on the SH website: http://survey.constantcontact.com/survey/a07e2jows0ofx80mzps/start In order to volunteer at school you must have passed a TB Screening (see TB Screening info below) and you must sign in with the office each time you arrive and leave campus. The following is a list of many of the ways you can volunteer at school: Buddy Family Community Relations Cultural Events EFO Garden Club Helping Hands Hot Lunch Ichabod‟s Gang Library Math in the Garden Musical Room Parent School Safety Teacher Appreciation Teacher Hospitality Technology Committee Think First
When you arrive at school to fulfill your volunteer shift, please make sure you sign in at the office, and take a volunteer badge or sticker to display upon yourself while you are on campus. When you leave, be sure to return the badge and sign out.
Tuberculosis Screening
If you plan to volunteer in the school in any capacity, please read this! The Contra Costa Health Department REQUIRES all volunteers in schools to show that they are free of communicable tuberculosis (TB). This applies to adults who volunteer in the school in any capacity, whether in the classroom, on field trips, or in the hot lunch program. Please click here for a list of all parents and staff members who are current on their TB test. If your name is not on this list you will NEED to have a TB Test in September. TB screening consists of a PPD skin test every four years. All PPD skin tests need to be checked by a trained health professional 2 to 3 days after they are given. THE COST FOR THE TB TEST IS $20. PAYMENT IS EXPECTED ON THE DATE OF THE TEST. Cash or checks are accepted. What You Need To Do Volunteers need to provide the school with proof of a recent negative PPD skin test. A volunteer with a positive PPD needs to provide the school with proof of a negative chest X-ray and a recent symptom screening by a physician, stating that the volunteer is free of communicable TB. All volunteers must update this information every two years. This information must be kept on file at the school. You can obtain a PPD or proof of recent chest X-ray from your private physician. You can also receive a PPD skin test at the Contra Costa Immunization Clinics.
TB Screening Dates As a service to OUSD parents and staff, nurses from the Visiting Nurses Association will be providing PPD skin testing for TB screening. Please remember that PPD skin tests must be read by a health professional in 48 to 72 hours for the test to be valid. Volunteers may receive a PPD test at any of the school locations below. Please note that the VNA nurses must adhere to the schedule and leave promptly at the hours noted.

PUMPKIN PATCH
Our Pumpkin Patch is a fun-filled day held the third Saturday of October on the Sleepy Hollow School grounds. This year it will be on Saturday October 17, 2009 from 11-3 pm. Each family is required to volunteer a work shift either before, during or after the event. Not to worry, they are relatively short and painless! At the Pumpkin Patch you will find: carnival games, prizes to win, a cake walk, lots of food, and our very own Haunted House! The whole family is invited to join in the fun. Bring friends... the more the merrier. Remember to bring cash, as there are several things you may feel inclined to spend money on: Our infamous Country Kitchen, which sells the most amazing homemade and/or store bought delicacies and confections... Raffle Tickets - for fabulous items donated by families and businesses in the area, Tickets for rides/games which allow your child to show his/her prowess in throwing beanbags through the windows of haunted houses, putting golfballs, or riding the mechanical bull! We also offer a cake decorating contest, which is an opportunity for your child to really use his/her imagination in concocting an edible, albeit often frightening, cake.
Scary Story Night
Students come to school one Thursday evening in October to hear scary stories read by teachers, library staff and even the Orinda Union School District‟s Superintendent! This is a fabulous event, where families picnic on the grassy quad and then disperse to various classrooms to enjoy stories, snacks, etc.! It‟s a night not to miss!

SPRING MUSICAL FOR 4TH & 5TH GRADE STUDENTS
The Spring Musical is an annual production, open to all 4th and 5th graders who choose to audition.
