Conference & UMC News and Resources
Conference Office Move Completed The Conference Office is now at our new location at 6110 Greenwood Plaza Boulevard in Greenwood Village, Colorado, southeast of Denver. The main phone numbers and e-mail addresses have remained the same. A recent e-mail and the Conference web site (Staff page) has some direct numbers to the offices, but it turns out that only numbers below 303-325-7054 are working as of this writing. The driving directions were in the last issue of TableTalk and are on the web site home page at the top. Or just call us! While conference staff are working similar hours to those at the old building, the front doors are open for walk-in traffic from 9-4 Monday - Friday. Other times need to be scheduled: 800-536-3736 or 303-733-3736. An open house is being planned for during Annual Conference in June. Come see us! Consecration Held The new office building was consecrated February 24, in a short service led by Bishop Brown, who adapted a liturgy from the Book of Worship. Scripture was read by Ron Hodges, Director of Mission and Ministry. Conference Treasurer Selected for New Position In an e-mail of February 10, Ron Hodges, Director of Mission and Ministry, announced that Dan O’Neill is leaving to assist Central Conferences of our denomination develop pension plans: It is with real sadness for our Annual Conference and joy for our denomination that I announce the assignment of Dan O’Neill as the newly selected Managing Director of Central Conference Pensions for the General Board of Pensions and Health Benefits. Dan’s new position will be to help the Central Conferences develop pension plans for the United Methodist clergy serving in those conferences around the world. He begins his new task on March 27th and will shortly thereafter be traveling to Estonia and Russia, the first of many such trips he will be taking on behalf of the Church. Dan has been the Treasurer, Director of Administrative Services, and Pensions and Health Care Benefits officer for the Rocky Mountain Conference for the past eight years. He has served as Staff liaison to the Council on Finance and Administration, Board of Pensions, Trustees, Personnel and Policies Committee, and the Executive Leadership Team. He has been active in youth work within the Conference and at the denominational level, serving on the leadership teams of the past several quadrennial youth events. As the first-elected lay person in 2003 he led our Conference delegation to the 2004 General and Jurisdictional Conferences and has sat on the Jurisdictional Episcopacy Committee. It was his years of membership on the General Board of Pensions that made his selection to this newly framed position not surprising. Dan’s humor and gags are legendary within the Conference office and at denominational gatherings. Water pistols, bobble-headed dolls, and weird and unusual items have been his stock-in-trade. Dan and his wife, Debbie, will continue to live in the Denver area for a period of time before relocating to the Chicago area. Their church membership is Phillips UMC in Lakewood. On a personal note, I cannot begin to say what a loss his leaving will mean to me and to the rest of the staff in the Conference office. He has been a leader, listener, confidant, challenger, and friend. The new Conference office is a witness to his attention to detail and management style. He will be sorely missed by us all. – Ron Hodges, Director of Mission and Ministry
Treasurer Dan O’Neill Says Goodbye Conference Treasurer Dan O’Neill announced his leaving in a News e-mail on Saturday, February 11. Friends, There are probably dozens of ways to start a letter that explains why one is resigning and leaving - but none of them that I can think of seems adequate. I have thoroughly enjoyed this job and intended to serve in this role for another ten years - and then retire. Coming to work at the office of the Rocky Mountain Conference of The United Methodist Church every day has always been a joy - never a burden. Traveling around the conference and meeting with many of you, answering your phone calls and replying to your e-mails, gathering with you for worship and for business - all of these activities have been both fun and fulfilling. The task now ahead of me is the job of "Managing Director of Central Conference Pensions" for the General Board of Pension and Health Benefits. This is a newly created position, and in this capacity, I will be charged with helping the Central Conferences (those conferences outside the bounds of the United States) determine the best pension plan(s) for them, and then help them get that plan established. The challenges of plan designs, retirement funding, global travel, and cultural as well as language differences are not trivial challenges. But you have trained me well and you have prepared me well. I will be in this office for another month or so, starting my new position at the end of March. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to serve you for these last eight years. In the discharge of my duties, I know that there have been points of collision. If there are those among you that have felt that I slighted you or angered you - please accept my honest and sincere apology. And be assured that I hold no memories of any offense received from anyone of you. The only memories I carry from this office are ones that I will cherish for many, many years to come. In this job, I have learned that one of the great strengths of The United Methodist Church is the strength of our connections. And so I am aware that many of us will cross paths again. I look forward to those crossings - and I regret that they will not be as frequent as I would like. In His Grip, Dan O'Neill From The Conference Treasurer, Dan O’Neill Building Move Accounting Now that we have settled into our new location and the bills are all paid, I recognize that I owe you a review of the costs. Last June's Annual Conference session authorized the Trustees to relocate the conference office with the limitation that it could not cost the conference budget anything, nor could they use any designated funds already on hand. I am very pleased to report that this move clearly exceeded that requirement. In short (and in rounded numbers) Our building (it had no interior walls when we bought it) cost $1,600,000. The "due diligence" reviews and the site selection costs were $10,000 The cost to design and finish the interior was $285,000 "Bridge loan" and construction financing costs came to $26,000 Moving costs were only $4,500 New furniture, phone systems, computer upgrades etc. so far have totaled $146,000 So the cost of the new facility is roughly $2,076,500 We have completed the sale of the old, 2200 S. University property, and the net proceeds of that sale were $2,097,000 The difference is a balance of about $23,000, and the Trustees have instructed me to set that aside as a reserve for unforeseen future expenses for this building. So we have a new facility, there were no costs to the conference, and we have a small reserve set aside for the unknown items that may still be "lurking" around the corner. And (for the next weeks, anyway) you know where to find me if you have questions. My last day in this position will be March 15. Apportionment Receipts Down Our apportionment receipts for 2005 have now been totaled, and we only received 78.8% of the total amount apportioned. For the previous year (2004), we received 81.1% and for 2003 the percentage was 83.1%. At the Council of Finance and Administration (CF&A) meeting on January 19, this trend was examined and discussed. For those of you responsible for the spending by one or more conference groups, this trend does impact the 2006 funds available for your various ministry efforts. As a result of that CF&A meeting, the
TableTalk, February 25, 2006, page 3
amount available for spending in the 2006 budget is now limited to 70% of the approved budget. This limit can be revised if there is a significant increase in apportionment receipts during the first half of this year. It is painful to limit the spending on those ministries that are already authorized by our annual conference. But your CF&A takes very seriously its responsibility to make sure this conference does not spend money that our churches do not provide through the Wider Mission apportionments. Dan O'Neill - Treasurer, RMC Comments On Apportionments by Director of Mission and Ministry “I trust you have all received the announcement from Dan O’Neill concerning our low level of apportionment receipts. This is particularly disappointing after such a marvelous response to the human tragedies of the tsunami, Katrina/Rita, and the earthquake. Failure to participate fully in apportionments puts the entire Conference in a very difficult place since ministries that we all expect to be in place may be compromised because of funding. This is additionally painful for me since my colleague in Louisiana, Don Cottrill, announced that his Conference, after losing the equivalent of one entire district to the storms and subsequent flooding and destruction, ended up paying 95% of their total. As a Conference we can do better than we have done. We must do better! God expects nothing but our very best.” – Ron Hodges No Licensing School This Year The Board of the Licensing School of the Rockies would like to announce that there will be no Licensing School held this summer for the Rocky Mountain & Yellowstone Conferences. Plans are underway for Licensing School in summer of 2007. This decision was reached because of low enrollment. Those who need to attend school this summer should contact the Board of Higher Education & Ministry website for information about schools in Kansas, Nebraska and New Mexico. Equitable Compensation Applications The Commission for Equitable Compensation is accepting applications for the second half of 2006. Churches who need short term financial assistance to pay their pastor may apply. Applications may be obtained from Donna Hite at the Rocky Mountain Conference Center, 303-733-3736, ext. 150 . Completed applications must be received by March 10, 2006. Please mail completed applications to Donna Hite at the new conference center, 6110 Greenwood Plaza Blvd., Greenwood Village, CO. – Mike Bergman, Chair, Commission for Equitable Compensation, 303-333-7352 WYNECO District Office Zip Code Correction The new address for the Wyoming-Northeast Colorado District Office had an incorrect ZIP code. Here is the corrected address: 1603 Capitol Ave, Suite 507, Cheyenne, WY 82001. Student Merit Award Deadline Announced The Conference Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry sponsors a Merit Award for students. RMC Clergy In the News Gil Caldwell The Denver Post on Sunday, January 15th, and on Monday, January 16th, carried two articles about retired RMC clergy Gil Caldwell’s involvement in the civil rights movement, his close connection to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his life in ministry, specifically as pastor of Park Hill UMC, Denver. Particularly, the article lifted up Gil’s book, What Mean These Stones? Lessons of Hurricane Katrina, 9/11, and Million Man March, the Millions More Movement. Pat Bruns Pat Bruns, pastor at Brentwood UMC (Denver) and diplomate in the American Psychotherapy Association, has been elected as a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the Annals of the American Psychotherapy Association. This is the official journal of the American Psychotherapy Association, and as an Editorial

Board Member he will read, review and critique articles submitted for publication in the journal. Congratulate him at PatrickRBruns@comcast.net Rebekah Simon-Peter A series of articles in the Rawlins Daily Times detailed a project of the Rawlins Church Clergy Association to challenge Rawlins churches to raise money for Katrina victims in Gautier (“go-shay”), Mississippi. During the period from October 22, 2005, through December 20, 2005, the Times chronicled the challenge to match over $11,000 given by community groups, school children and prison inmates to hurricane relief, and a drive to take Christmas gifts with the money. The “mission trip” was planned by Rebekah Simon-Peter, pastor at First UMC of Rawlins, and two other pastors, from the Church on the Rock and the First Southern Baptist Church. The week-long trip, from December 11-18, was made by Rebekah and Karen Larsen of FUMC, 3 members of Church on the Rock and a Daily Times reporter in a van provided by the Church on the Rock. The group purchased sheetrock, grocery story gift cards, and brought Christmas gifts, greetings, and good cheer from the people of Rawlins. Rebekah was quoted frequently in the series. A copy of the extensive coverage is in the Communications office. Leanne Hadley, Donna Patterson, Linda Patzke In light of the 50th anniversary of the ordination of women, The Upper Room published the book Courageous Spirit, that includes writings from UMC clergy women around the country. Three from the Rocky Mountain Conference are included in it, Leanne Hadley, Donna Patterson, and Linda Patzke. Ron Hodges has said of the book, “It really is a nice book with lots of thought-provoking and interesting pieces.”

Center for Pastoral Effectiveness Begins New Center in Utah The Center for Pastoral Effectiveness of the Rockies is a series of six retreats over 16 months designed to improve pastoral effectiveness through a process designed to maintain ministers in ministry. The retreats teach participants how to become well-differentiated leaders, with greater clarity about goals, and less likely to become lost in the anxious, emotional processes which naturally occur in ministry. Much more here: http://rmcumc.org/Community/viewtopic.php?t=251 Iliff Sponsors Workshop on Communion 'Rubrics' Cathie Kelsey, Dean of the Iliff Chapel program, has arranged a special workshop on the practice and theology of the Eucharist based on the General Conference document “This Holy Mystery.” This document was adopted by the 2004 General Conference as a United Methodist understanding of Holy Communion. Faith leaders face obstacles of many varieties, but particularly when it comes to controversial justice issues. This praxis will learn from pastors attempts to advocate for justice, and hear some lessons learned (painful at times) about knowing when to yield power and when to wield it. March 31 - April 1. DenUM Celebrates 25 Years A celebration of 25 years of service by Denver Urban Ministries was held March 5 in Denver honoring donors, volunteers and staff and hearing the personal story of one of their clients who says DenUM is his foundation for a new life. The agency says it was formed to respond to poverty in the heart of Denver... and to transform the hearts of its supporters. DenUM continues to hold out powerful possibilities for resourcing a church’s relationship to the poor. How? News From Our United Methodist Brothers and Sisters in Angola The Rocky Mountain Conference has established a relationship with the two Annual Conferences in Angola. In the spring of 2005 a container of material, supplies, and food was sent and after some delay and other complications the container arrived. Bishop Jose Quipungo has written his appreciation for the contents designated for the East Annual Conference which have arrived. In his note he says, Thank you very much. Let me take this opportunity to send the gratitude from the people called Methodist in East Angola Annual Conference, especially my wife by the all things that you send to us in Container. ... It was very hard to take all from Luanda to Malanje. Only last week it was possible. Please share this our feeling of gratitude with Bishop Brown, Grace, and all brothers and sister in United States that make all these arrangements to give us this special gift. Again, thank you very much. The difficulty in moving the contents from the coastal city of Luanda to Malanje was an unexpected cost and we hope to raise some funds to assist with this expense. If groups, churches and individuals in the Rocky Mountain Conference would like to help, please send your Conference Advance Special contributions to the Rocky Mountain UMC Conference Office marked for "Angola Fund". -- Burl Kreps Mission Trip Opportunities - 2006

Mississippi Conference Warehouse Project Advice Sought The Mississippi Conference is preparing to build a couple of warehouses in the next few months. They write, “These will serve as distribution points for materials during the present disaster response, and will also create for us 'launch' points in the next disaster. We envision having the ability to move much faster in the future, and hopefully assist neighboring Conferences. "Part of this building plan includes the installation of 'bunk trailers' and 'shower trailers' adjacent to the warehouses for volunteers who come into the State. It is our hope of course that this will give us added capacity for volunteers, while also taking some strain off Local Churches that have carried the load thus far." "So here is where you come in. Our Conference Director has asked me to find out how many of these trailers we can lay our hands on, and how much it will cost us. Obviously we don't have a lot of money, and every dime we spend on a trailer is one we cannot spend on sheetrock or roofing shingles. So I need ideas and input. Does anybody know a good way to acquire these trailers, or even donations to purchase these trailers? We really want to save UMCOR funds for direct assistance if at all possible." “Thank for all you are doing to help Mississippi. Peace and Grace,” – Chris Bowers, MS Conference Resource Coordinator, Methodist Katrina Response, 866-435-7091
