Podcasting with Garageband and itunes
What is podcasting?
Podcasting is a way to provide audio or audio and visual content through the web. Podcasting can be done a number of ways. This handout only deals with using Garageband/itunes.
How do I get audio onto my podcast?
Open Garageband. Here is the icon:

choose “create new podcast
Garageband will make you name the file to create it. After that, you will get to the work area. start stop When you get there, you can record voices by choosing “male voice” or “female voice”. To record, press the red button. To stop, press the play button. The keyboard shortcuts are “r” for record, spacebar for stop.
Notice, in the picture to the left that “male voice” is highlighted. If you have problems recording, check that you have the right track highlighted. If you have “podcast track” or “jingles” highlighted, it wonʼt record. Also, make sure you get some audio wavelengths -- that will prove that itʼs recording.

If you need to fix a track, itʼs easy. To splice, just make sure the red line is where you want to break up your track, then either go to edit --> split, or click command-t. This will split your track. Then just press delete for the part that doesnʼt work.

How do I get pictures onto my podcast?
The easiest way is to make sure the pictures you want are in your iphoto library. Then press the media button on the right media button (blue because itʼs highlighted)
Then just move the picture you want from media to the podcast track. You can change the length of time the image lasts by grabbing the end of the picture and changing it to how long you want it.

When you see this icon, you can change the time your track lasts.
You can also drag pictures from your desktop or other folders. After dragging in the picture, you can change the time the same way. If you cannot see your whole picture, click the scissors on the middle toolbar (left hand side), make sure your picture track is highlighted, and in the bottom, your picture tracks will show. Double click on the picture you want to change and the artwork editor will pop up. You can move your picture or change the size in this.

How do I put sound effects or a musical score on my podcast?

When you are done with your podcast and have saved it (please donʼt forget to save it!), click on the “Share” menu at the top. At this point, there are many ways you can share it. I always click “export podcast to disk” because then the computer puts the podcast on my desktop where I can easily find it to put it on my blog.
After youʼve exported your podcast, you will know everthing has worked because you should have a file with a blue connected eighth note icon.

Now, open your blog, put in your password, and go to “create new entry.” Write your subject, in the entry space, maybe you want to write a blurb describing your podcast, then go to the bottom of the web page. Here is what you should see:
You want to click “upload a podcast”. Here is what the menu will look like now:
Browse & find your podcast. Then go ahead and save your entry. Viola! You have a podcast on your blog. How awesome are you? Pat yourself on the back and go get a beer!
