Charity & Fund-raising
1) Which Organisation is this?
2) What do you know about the Red Cross? o o o How and when was it founded? Do you know anyone who is a member? Have you ever used the Red Cross?
3) Read the information below about the Red Cross. Who founded it and when?
In 1859 a young Swiss businessman saw something that changed his life and the history of the world. His name was Henry Dunant and he witnessed the Battle of Solferino in Italy. He was very upset by the suffering of the people who were hurt and injured from both sides of the battle. He was more upset that no one took care of them. As a result, he thought of every country creating a group of trained volunteers who would care impartially for the injured of all countries and they would be protected by an international agreement. His idea led directly to the start of the Red Cross, the signing of the First Geneva Convention and the use of the Red Cross as an international symbol of protection. Today the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is the world’s largest voluntary organisation, with a global membership close to 250,000,000 and a National Society in almost every country of the world.
4) Read the text again and answer these questions: a. What does ‘impartial’ mean and why is it important that the Red Cross is a completely independent non-political organisation? List some of the services you think the Red Cross might offer. How do you think the Red Cross raises money to help people?
b. c.
5) With your group choose a charity you would like to help. Think about your reasons for choosing this charity. Make a list of ideas for fund-raising for that charity. Select an event and plan it with your group. Try to think about the following questions:
o What? o When? o Where? o Who? o Who will look after the money? o Who will send it to the appropriate charity?
6) Now choose someone in your group to present your ideas to the rest of the class. The class will then vote on the best idea.
