High School Humanities Teaching Positions in China with DK Education, a fast-paced,
innovative program developed by a young cross-cultural team of Chinese and
American “edupreneurs “ with support from Lucy Haagen (Program in Education,
The DK International Program is a "magnet" program that operates within but not
under the authority of China’s top public and independent high schools. Its goal is to
provide able Chinese high schoolers with a progressive, interactive "global"
humanities and English language experience enabling them to qualify for and
succeed in U.S. liberal arts colleges and undergraduate university programs.
DKIP teachers - mostly recent graduates of top US institutions - typically work in
teams of 3-4 with support from bilingual program staff. The program is far different
from typical English teaching or test prep programs in that it integrates literature,
contemporary and comparative history, and social science and more closely
resembles instruction in an honors class in a competitive U.S. secondary. School than
a foreign language program. Some Chinese language ability while obviously a plus,
is not a requirement since all instruction is provided in English and DK class assistants
are bilingual. Most teachers make a 2-year commitment, but teaching contracts are
for one year with a renewal option. After DKIP, teachers have gone on to MBA and
JD programs, as well as graduate work in public policy, economics, and education.
Like Peace Corps and Teach for America, DKIP seeks applicants who are recent
college grads from a variety of majors. Successful applicants have some teaching,
international, and/or NGO experience - paid or volunteer. They are also
adventurous, flexible, creative, and interested in learning more about the world's
fastest growing economy. In addition to teaching, DKIP’ers develop curricula, assist in
program marketing, organize rural service projects and collaborate with teachers at
their site and virtually with program staff in Beijing and the U.S.
