NEWS $115 MILLION IN NEW CUTS TO UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA FUNDING The recently adopted state budget plan for the rest of 2008-09 and the 2009-10 fiscal year includes $115 million in permanent funding cuts to the University of California system. These new reductions are comprised of an additional cut of $50 million on top of the proposed $65.5 million mid-year cut for 2008-09. This new legislation will grow the total UC shortfall over the next two years to $450 million. The University of California does not yet know how these budget changes will affect 2009 enrollment fees. ADVISORY COMMITTEE BEGINS INTERVIEWS FOR NEW CHANCELLOR Currently, the 18-member committee for the selection of a new Chancellor at UC Davis is beginning preliminary interviews of top candidates. Through a series of screenings, the number of candidates has been reduced from an initial 600 down to the 21. However, none of these candidates have been pre-noted as "finalists" for the position. UC President Mark Yudof is expected to submit his decision to the University of California Board of Regents at either their March or May meeting. HONEYCOMB HIDEOUT WINS HÄAGEN-DAZS-UC DAVIS HONEY BEE GARDEN DESIGN COMPETITION In February 2008, the Häagen-Dazs brand launched their "Häagen-Dazs Loves Honey Bees" campaign by donating $250,000 for honey bee research at UC Davis and Pennsylvania State University. The international competition was established with another $125,000 donation from Häagen-Dazs with which the best design will be realized on the UC Davis campus in October 2009. The Sausalito-based Sibbett Group's winning design features four interconnected gardens each given clever names such as Honeycomb Hideout and Nectar Nook. The key goals of the competition and the garden itself are to provide honey bees with a year-round food source and to raise public awareness and interest. NEW STUDY IDENTIFIES LOCATION IN THE BRAIN THAT MAY LINK MUSIC, MEMORY AND EMOTION A recent study conducted by UC Davis researcher Petr Janata may have identified a hub in the brain where autobiographical memories are linked with those of familiar music and emotions. Researchers mapped subjects' brain activity as they listened to a variety of popular songs and recorded their responses. The results showed that the area in the brain which triggers memories of our past - located directly behind the forehead - also serves as a hub that links familiar music with emotions. This could explain why certain music still elicits strong responses from patients with Alzheimer's disease, since the area identified is the last to atrophy in the brain. This newfound relevance of autobiographically important music could serve to improve the quality of life for such patients in the future through developments in music therapy. ____________________________________________ UPCOMING EVENTS Friday, March 6 Chicano/Latino 4th Annual Social Gathering Friday, March 20 Norouz Celebration Persian New Year Saturday, March 21 East Bay Community Service Day
