Course Content Form PIMA COMMUNITY COLLEGE Effective Term: 200810 DCP 103 Direct Care Professional: Alzheimer and Related Forms of Dementia Initiator: Campus: Date: Ted Roush Northwest 11/8/06 Credit Hours: 2 Lecture Periods: 2 Lab Periods: Course Offered: Fall Prerequsite: DCP 101 Direct Care Professional: Principles of Care Giving Course Description: Presents principles and applications of provision of care in the home environment for persons with Alzheimer and related forms of dementia. Addresses an overview of services and continuum of care; aspects of independent living; and roles and responsibilities of Direct Care Professionals (DCPs). Also includes legal and ethical issues, vulnerable adult abuse, reporting requirements, and care plans. Emphasis on aspects of Alzheimer’s as related to physical disabilities and chronic conditions, psychological and cognitive conditions and implications for DCPs. Performance Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to do the following: Restate and apply the principles of care giving pertaining to persons with dementia. Describe and explain the roles, responsibilities, requirements, and scope of practice for Direct Care Professionals (DCPs). 3. Describe and explain legal and ethical issues related to persons with dementia, guidelines for avoiding legal action, and methods for protecting consumer rights. 4. Explain the importance of creating an appropriate dementia care giving culture. 5. Describe and demonstrate the development and the implementation of service/care plans for consumers with Alzheimer and related forms of dementia. 6. Describe and demonstrate the basic strategies used to identify, prevent and deal with behavior problems of the person with dementia. 7. Describe and demonstrate the “soft approach” in working with a person with dementia. 8. Describe and demonstrate the types, symptoms, causes, and treatments of dementia. 9. Describe and illustrate the various symptoms of dementia with the various types of dementia. 10. Describe and explain the difference between reversible and irreversible dementia. 11. Describe and explain the various causes of Alzheimer’s. 12. Identify the characteristics of each stage and affects on client, primary family member caregiver, other family members, friends, and DCP caregivers of Alzheimer’s. 1. 2. Outline: I. Overview A.
