					Riker Hill Interest Sheet -- Chair and Volunteer Descriptions
COMMITTEE Active Wear Chairperson Volunteer TIME OF YEAR Fall and Spring; work begins in summer for Fall line Research and choose vendor and designs for school spirit apparel and other items. Plan and coordinate sales and distribution for Fall and Spring lines; sell items at Back To School Night. Assist in design, sale and distribution of apparel. Art Appreciation* Late fall through Spring Chairperson Coordinate the volunteers who will bring art lessons into each classroom. Assist in the development of new projects where needed. Attend 1-2 town-wide meetings. Communicate with districtwide chair who will continue the development of the Art Appreciation page on the P-T Council Website, updating and adding new projects as they are created. Volunteer Coordinate with teacher to schedule a lesson on a famous artist and make a related art project with the class. Lesson plans and materials are provided. Submit projects to individual school chair to be added to Bake Sale Chairperson the PT Council website. All year Organize Bake Sales throughout the year. May include running bake sales during election days and the winter and spring concerts, as well as sales of pre-ordered baked goods such as cookie dough and pies. Volunteer Coordinate parent volunteers for baking, selling and distributing. Provide home-baked goods, work at sales, assist in distribution of pre-ordered baked goods.

Birthday Book Club All year Chairperson Run monthly solicitations for Birthday Book Club, collect Birthday Book Club dues and arrange for bookplates to be typed. Volunteer Type bookplates. Early Fall Bloomingdale's Fundraiser Chairperson Coordinate Riker Hill's participation in this fundraiser, sell tickets, man table at Bloomies Volunteer Sell tickets, man table at Bloomies

Board of Education Observer All year - meetings are on two Monday nights per month. Chairperson Coordinate schedule of Riker Hill representatives to attend evening Board of Ed meetings. Report back to HSA on each meeting. Volunteer Book Fair Chairperson Volunteer Attend board meetings -- with enough volunteers in rotation may only have to attend a few. Provide report to Chairperson on meetings attended. October (during teacher conferences) Coordinate Fall Book Fair with administration, vendor and teachers. Solicit volunteers, advertise book fair and handle money. Help set up and dismantle book fair and assist children in selecting books during school hours and an evening event. Box Tops for Education/Campbell Soup Labels All year Chairperson Organize and coordinate these collections throughout the year to earn money and playground equipment for our school. Volunteer Assist in the collection and bundling of box tops and Campbell's labels.

Coordinate production of student directory. Collect student information and order forms and input data. Coordinate advertising efforts. Solicit ads and proofread data. All year Must be willing to commit to all of the following: The position of Class Parent is a privilege as it allows these parents to do things that other parents cannot – be in school more often, attend class parties, etc. This privilege of greater access to a child's classroom is generally granted to parents who show a dedication to supporting the HSA. This dedication and commitment is demonstrated, in part, through volunteering to assist or chair committees and attending HSA meetings. Class Parents are required to take a more active role in the HSA. h h h h h Volunteer for, or chair, at least 3 committees. Provide publicity committee with class photo opportunities. Required to attend monthly HSA meetings. Make calls to ask parents to volunteer for various school run functions. Assist classroom teachers with activities, parties and trips as needed.

Cultural Arts* All year Chairperson Attend cultural arts showcases, select and arrange assemblies for students. Coordinate with Principal to bring shows appropriate for individual building needs. Create a master list of events and coordinate a master schedule to be shared by all elementary schools and MPMS. Attend town-wide meetings to share information with other schools. Some summer work is required, mostly phone calls and paperwork. Many Volunteer shows are booked during summer months. Showcases are in Fall and Spring. Assist with viewing showcases, scheduling and organizing assemblies both prior to and day of performances. Environmental Awareness All year Chairperson Involve the school community in environmental projects and issues to create an environmentally-friendly school. Volunteer Assist in planning and carrying out projects. Evening Auction Fundraiser Late Fall through auction date (usually March) Chairperson Plan, coordinate and facilitate an evening auction in the Spring (may be tricky tray basket auction, casino night, etc.). Volunteer Many different jobs, including soliciting and collecting prizes, creating baskets, ticket sales, etc.

COMMITTEE TIME OF YEAR Faculty Recognition September and June Chairperson Organize a "Welcome Back" breakfast (or special gift) in September and a "Recognition" luncheon in June for the teaching staff. Volunteer Assist in planning and serving. Fall Fall Family Festival/Block Party Chairperson Organize a casual evening of family fun with an autumn theme. Volunteer Many different jobs including creating and organizing activities, decorating the gym, preparing food, running an activity that evening, etc. Family Photo Day October Chairperson Plan and facilitate a day of photos for Riker Hill families. Arrange schedule and coordinate the day with the photographer. Fifth Grade Committee All year Chairperson Coordinate the efforts of all 5th grade committees by organizing monthly 5th grade meetings (may be chairs of committees and/or open to all 5th grade parents). Coordinate 5th grade portions of the yearbook, DVD montage and Boat Trip. Assist Yearbook Chairs in collecting and scanning baby photos, kindergarten photos and photos from throughout elementary school of current 5th graders to ensure that all 5th graders are represented in the photos. Prepare and collate 5th grade questionnaire and student signature; prepare "Favorites" page. Work with yearbook committee and DVD montage person. Organize the copying of DVD montage for all students. Book boat and DJ for end of year Boat Trip. Volunteer Assist in ensuring that all children are represented in the various yearbook pages and montage. Requires a variety of parents that know different students and are willing to follow up with 5th graders and their parents. 5th Grade Apparel September & June (work begins in summer for Fall sweatshirt) Chairperson Organize, order, distribute 5th grade sweatshirt at beginning of year and 5th grade tee shirt at end of year Volunteer Assist in organizing and distributing apparel 5th Grade Car Wash & Dunk Tank September & June Chairperson In Fall, organize car wash; advertise, solicit and coordinate parent and student volunteers. In Spring, organize school fair Dunk Tank; order dunk tank, prepare & collect permission slips, coordinate parent Volunteer volunteers, prepare schedule of 5th graders Assist in planning car wash and volunteer that day. 5th Grade Graduation Program and Tribute Book Spring Chairperson Responsible for soliciting ads from school community and local community and blurbs from parents congratulating students. Oversee creation and printing of Program. Volunteer Proofread Program and assist in soliciting ads.

COMMITTEE TIME OF YEAR 5th Grade End of Year Celebrations All year Chairperson Organize and coordinate volunteers for end of year celebrations (e.g., Pizza Party, Funplex, Bagel Breakfast) as well as 5th Grade Play Cast Party. Volunteer Chairperson Assist in planning, and volunteer at, events Spring Two RH representatives will sit on the nominating committee for MPMS. Together reps. from each elementary school will collaborate to identify the 11 people who will make up the MPMS Executive Board. Responsible for advertising the positions and soliciting interested people from your individual school. If you want a position at MPMS, you may not sit on this nominating committee. Once serving on the committee, if you choose to be appointed as a nominee, it will be your responsibility to work with the PTA/H.S.A. Presidents to select a replacement to attend the committee meetings. Call President for more information. Gifted and Talented (PAGE)* All year Chairperson PAGE (Parent Advocacy Group for Excellence) is dedicated to enhancing the education of our students through the G/T Academic, G/T Art, G/T Music and Schoolwide Enrichment Programs K-8. Attend four Volunteer (4) evening PAGE meetings during the year, and report back to HSA. Attend four PAGE meetings that are open to all members of the community. 6th Grade Nominating Committee*

Half-day Activity Twice a year, during teachers conference weeks Chairperson Plan and coordinate an event on two of the half days of school (e.g., bowling, rollerblading, etc.) Volunteer Chaperone and assist with refreshments, check-in and clean-up at event. Halloween Hoopla Fall until Sunday before Halloween Chairperson Organize a craft or game for Riker Hill's booth at the town-wide Hoopla at LHS on the Sunday before Halloween. Volunteer Historian Chairperson Hobby Hour* Chairperson Volunteer Assist in creating idea for craft/game and help work at the booth. All year Create a scrapbook of all mentions or pictures of Riker Hill students or staff appearing in the local newspaper. Provide updates to HSA VP or Co-Presidents. All year Arrange for various 1 hour (after school) classes for 2 days a week. Arrange for volunteers to help supervise the children going to these classes. Attend 1 to 2 townwide meetings. Supervise the implementation of the program during the course of each session.

HSA Membership All year, but busiest in the fall. Chairperson Devise and implement a plan to encourage 100% membership of Riker Hill families and faculty. Collect and record receipt of dues. Human Relations* All year, busiest in December and MLK day. Chairperson Coordinate several events or drives during the year to emphasize service to the community. This includes a drive near the December holidays and one on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Other efforts may include Halloween Candy Drive, Thanksgiving Food Drive, clothing drive and other individual school Volunteer efforts. Assist in the planning and execution of these events or drives.

COMMITTEE TIME OF YEAR Kindergarten Buddies All year, especially in fall Chairperson Organize volunteers to act as "mentors" to new Kindergarten families and answer questions. Send fact sheet about Riker Hill to new parents in late August. Volunteer Serve as a "buddy" to one or more new Kindergarten families. Offer your help and expertise on dealing with the "Kindergarten experience" at Riker Hill. Kindergarten Prep* September through May Chairperson Coordinate with districtiwide chair to disseminate district generated information to incoming kindergarten parents. Organize monthly sessions for next year's incoming Kindergarteners to familiarize them with Riker Hill. Arrange for volunteers to assist. Work with office staff to ensure registration of all students for Kindergarten. Volunteer Assist children in monthly, one hour pre-K programs. Activities include art project, snack, playground and meeting with specialty teachers and administration. Legislation*/Town Council Representative As legislation arises which impacts school. Chairperson Attend meetings of Town-wide Legislation Committee and act as a liaison between the committee and the school community to share information regarding any State and/or Federal legislation pertinent to the Volunteer education of our children. Coordinate action under the guidance of PT Council. Assist in all efforts.

Lunch Program All year Chairperson Oversee the lunch program. Determine which vendors are selected, collect order forms and money, order food for each day, provide class lists to lunchroom, arrange for volunteers to serve lunch and Volunteer Media Center Chairperson Volunteer purchase supplies as needed. Assist in serving lunch. All year, busiest in the Fall Work with Media Specialist to assist in the smooth running of the Media Center primarily by organizing volunteer schedule for each class. Volunteers are solicited in the fall once class schedules are available. Volunteers assist in the Media Center by checking books in and out and re-shelving books upon return. Memorial Day Parade Chairperson Organize Riker Hill students to march in the Livingston Memorial Day Parade. Volunteer Miscellaneous March in the parade and assist in coordinating. Volunteer an occasional hour or two whenever a committee needs an extra set of hands. This is a great way to get involved without making a major commitment! Monthly School Calendar All year Chairperson Prepare a monthly calendar, detailing school events, for distribution to students/parents at the beginning of each month. Multiculturalism* Late winter until April or May Chairperson Organize Multicultural Evening at Riker Hill. Attend several town-wide meetings and encourage the recognition and appreciation of the diverse cultural traditions represented in our school. Volunteer Many different jobs, including arranging for activities/crafts at the event, decorating, publicity, set up, clean-up, etc. May

COMMITTEE Nutrition* Chairperson TIME OF YEAR October, March and April Attend town-wide meetings to promote nutrition and health and wellness values through theme days, calendar activities, articles or programs. Coordinate activities for National Nutrition Month in March. Volunteer Organize welcome back bagel breakfast in the fall, arrange for volunteers to bake and serve. Assist in nutritional and health and wellness awareness activities. Assist in serving at bagel breakfast.

Parent Education* To be determined Chairperson In coordination with District-wide Chair, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum/Instruction and/or Director of Guidance, parent/school community, and broader community organizations, create and attend educational programs to support parents' understanding of district-wide curriculum and instruction goals and/or parenting skills related to Social Emotional Awareness/Learning; attend meetings as appropriate. Volunteer Plant Sale Chairperson Volunteer In coordination with committee chair, establish communication with parent community, participate in the planning and implementation of all programs; and attend meetings as appropriate. May Organize the Mother's Day Plant Sale. Assist in selling plants at sale.

P.P.E.C.* (Parents & Professionals for Exceptional Children) 2 or 3 meetings Chairperson Responsible for attending town-wide meetings, help organize 2 -3 programs a year for parents and teachers and participate in the scholarship program for graduating seniors. Opportunities to serve on Volunteer Publicity Chairperson the PPEC board are available to interested chair-people. Attend meetings that are open to all members of the community. All year Coordinate the weekly submission of pictures of Riker Hill students to the West Essex Tribune. Supervise volunteers to ensure that all events are covered. Display newspaper photos and other Volunteer snapshots on publicity bulletin board. On a rotating basis, take pictures of students involved in various activities throughout the year. We are looking for one individual to represent each grade. Red Ribbon Week* (Drug Awareness) Chairperson Coordinate with town-wide effort to distribute Red Ribbon Week material to the school. Volunteer coordinators with the drug survey, i.e. stuffing envelopes, collecting papers, etc. Restaurant Nights Chairperson Plan, coordinate and facilitate fundraisers with local restaurants Volunteer Safety* Chairperson the district. Report information back to school and be an advocate for keeping the children safe. Participate in 2 safety walks with the Principal at the beginning and the end of the school year. Organize Volunteer voluteers to monitor compliance with safety rules during drop off and pick up. Assist in detecting and resolving safety issues, monitor compliance with safety rules during drop off and pick up. Assist in soliciting restaurants and advertising event. COMMITTEE School Fair Chairperson Volunteer TIME OF YEAR Late winter until event (May or June) Plan, coordinate and facilitate the School Fair. Arrange various activities, set-up, clean up, work at booths.

School Supplies Responsibilites for orders begin in Spring 2010 then distribute in Sept 2010 Chairperson Coordinate with teachers, parents and vendor to provide students with needed school supplies on first day of school. Chairperson responsibilities begin in Spring of next year. Volunteer Distribute supplies to classrooms. Volunteer responsibilites begin this coming September. Fall Wrapping Paper Chairperson Organize gift wrap fundraiser, distribute and collect order forms, verify order totals, arrange for volunteers to distribute gift wrap upon delivery. Can consider other fundraisers provided by same Volunteer company. Assist in preparation of order forms and assist in the distribution of gift wrap when it is delivered.

Yearbook/Montage Fall through mid-winter Chairperson Arrange for the creation, sale and distribution of the all-school yearbook and 5th Grade Montage. 2 chairs needed, one for computer/creative work, the other for administrative and overseeing the collection of material. Collect photos of all students to ensure that all students are represented in the Volunteer yearbook. Assist in taking digital pictures at special events and in classrooms (arrange dates and times with teachers), type and proofread, gather and arrange information. We are looking for one individual to represent each grade.
