The WCRP Special Workshop will convene at the Aula Magna “Cardenal Pironio”, 1 st
floor, Edificio San José of UCA´s urban campus at Puerto Madero, the old Buenos
Aires harbor. The exact address of Edificio San José is Alicia Moreau de Justo 1600.
Coming from Plaza de Mayo San José is the last building. All campus buildings are
refurbished dock buildings over a 100 years old. The figure below shows the campus
profile along the docks of the old Buenos Aires harbor. When you walk from the first
building, Edificio Santa María, the dock alongside the urban campus should be to your
The map below shows the location of the urban campus, and the restaurant where the
conference dinner will be held. Workshop hotels/hostels all have maps showing their
location. The urban campus includes a number of bars in the ground floors of the Santo
Tomás Moro and San Alberto Magno buildings. Lunch can be bought at “La Barra”
bars for the equivalent of US$8 to US$13.--. Note that the university bars only accept
cash. A Starbucks Coffee shop is available also at the San José.
A bank and ATM machine can be found between the Santo Tomás Moro and San
Alberto Magno buildings, between the parking entrances, in a small, separate,
refurbished building where dock operation offices used to be in the old harbor.
When you arrive to the Buenos Aires Airport in Ezeiza, you can get a ticket for the
Manuel Tienda Leon bus or hire a taxi or remise. This must be done before you leave
the customs secure area. As you walk out of the baggage control area you will see the
car rental, Tienda Leon and taxi offices before reaching the gates of the customs area.
Do not hire a cab outside this area. As you As you can see from the map most hotels
and hostels are within walking distance of the urban campus. Note that not all the streets
in the San Telmo/Downtown neighborhoods have access to the old harbor area. Access
to the Puerto Madero is through Avenida Belgrano by the Edificio Santa María, Chile
St., Avenida Independencia (entrance to the Edificio San José) and Estados Unidos St.
Mass transport in Buenos Aires is cheap and the underground metro (“subte”) network
is reasonably good. Note however that the A line metro under Avenida de Mayo is
currently undergoing major repairs and will remain closed through the middle of March.
Taxis and remise are generally safe. However we recommend that you travel with radio-
taxis, which the hotel/hostel or the University front desk can call.
In general Buenos Aires is a safe city but precautions must be taken in particular from
pickpockets, called “pungas”, which sometimes operate in groups of three or four to
distract the potential victim, particularly in tourist areas. Take care with your bags,
laptops and cameras. Do not accept the offer for a quick currency exchange in the
streets by the so called “arbolitos”. You may receive fake pesos for your dollars or
euros. Either go to banks or commercial exchanges, the latter are mostly found on San
Martin St. in the downtown area, or get cash in pesos from ATM machines with your
credit/debit card. You can also change currency upon arrival at the airport in the Banco
de la Nación Argentina booth, which opens all day. Banks and exchanges open from
10:00 to 15:00. All ATM machines operate with international ATM networks. Note that
most ATM machines are usually serviced from 16:00 to 17:00. All university buildings
have private security and general security in the Puerto Madero area is provided by
Prefectura Naval Argentina (National Coastguard).
Summer is warm to hot in Buenos Aires, and can be humid. Average daily temperature
for February is 24°C, minimum daily temperature 19°C and maximum daily
temperature 29°C. Historical summer max-min extremes are 38.8°C and 5.6°C. Average
relative humidity is 70%. Monthly rainfall for this time of the year is between 110 and
140mm, with an average of 9 rainy days, most of it during storms following spells of
hot, humid weather. Temperatures can fall as much as 15°C in a couple of hours after
such storms. Note that the San José has a very efficient central air-conditioning system
and hence it would be convenient to bring some appropriate extra clothing for your stay
in the building.
