Clinical Research Fellowship

Clinical research fellowships are awarded to encourage young clinicians in rheumatology, or any related field (including general practice) concerned with the treatment of arthritis and related musculoskeletal diseases, to undertake a period of dedicated research leading to a higher degree (usually a PhD). The Clinician Scientist Fellowship provides four years' support for clinical researchers who wish to develop their research skills and make the transition from doctoral research training to an independent clinical-academic investigator. The fellowship is potentially renewable for a further four years, allowing the fellow to start to develop their own research group. The Royal Society Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowships were established through the generosity of the Leverhulme Trust and provide opportunities for academic researchers to be relieved of all their teaching and administrative duties. These appointments enable academic researchers to concentrate on full-time research for up to one year. The MRC clinical research training fellowship provides up to three years' support for clinically qualified, active professionals to undertake specialised or further research training in the bio-medical sciences within the UK. A further year’s funding is available for patient orientated clinical research training fellowships. This scheme is for medical, dental, veterinary or clinical psychology graduates who have little or no research training, but who wish to develop a long-term career in academic medicine. Applications are encouraged from individuals who wish to undertake substantial training through high-quality research in an appropriate unit or clinical research facility, towards a PhD or MD qualification.

They aim to retain the best postdoctoral researchers in areas of research relevant to arthritis and musculoskeletal disease and provide an opportunity for fellows to develop independent research ideas at an early stage in their career. Fellowships cannot be taken up until the PhD has been awarded. These fellowships are awarded to medical graduates, usually during specialty training or equivalent level, or postdoctoral scientists, who wish to undertake research in any discipline relevant to arthritis and related musculoskeletal diseases in another institution, either abroad or in the UK, for up to one year. arc, jointly with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of England, is offering a competitive fellowship to trainee orthopaedic surgeons who wish to undertake research relevant to a better understanding and/or treatment of arthritis and related musculoskeletal diseases. This is a flexible award open to clinicians, scientists and allied health professionals who are existing holders of arc fellowships, to provide support for progression to a more senior fellowship or other academic post.

Call

Summary of Call To enable an experienced researcher to undertake a visit to a distinguished laboratory abroad, either for a short period to acquire specialist knowledge or expertise, or for a longer period to carry out a research project that could not be done in the UK. BHF’s expectation is that its professors appointed to recognized UK centres of excellence will bring research leadership at an internationally competitive level and a commitment to training future cardiovascular scientists. How the proposed candidate supports and enhances the university’s overall cardiovascular research strategy and the added value to the BHF of making the award are also important considerations. To provide a career opportunity in an established research institution in the UK for individuals with an established research record who intend to become leaders in academic medical research. NTN will be exchanged for NTN(A) on appointment, and the individual may progress to consultant level during the fellowship. To provide a career opportunity in an established research institution in the UK for outstanding individuals who are expected to reach Readership or Chair level within 10 years To provide a foundation in research training for medically qualified graduates in an established research institution in the UK. The Daphne Jackson Trust enables scientists, engineers and IT specialists to return to work after career breaks. These are intended for individuals with between five and fifteen years' active postdoctoral or equivalent professional experience, allowing them to develop their careers by taking their research in a new direction or to a new level. The programme allows social scientists to spend time in a department in order to undertake policy-relevant research and to upgrade the research skills of partner organisation employees. The minimum period for a fellowship will be three or four months and the maximum one year.

Call

Summary of Call The scheme is open to all social sciences disciplines. However during 2008, ESRC is specifically encouraging proposals in the following fields: economics, education, management and business studies, advanced quantitative methods, social work, and socio-legal studies; global environmental change. Awards may last one year on a fulltime basis or two years on a part-time basis. These may be requested on any research application, with the exception of small grants and postdoctoral fellowships. Awards offer the student an opportunity to both develop their substantive research skills, alongside broader professional development. Grants will meet the full 100 per cent cost of the normal provision. Short-term Fellowships enable researchers to move into new areas by learning state-ofthe-art techniques in use abroad or by establishing new research collaborations. These fellowships can last from two weeks to three months in a foreign country. To be eligible, a fellow must either come from or go to a member country. The scheme enables engineers from all disciplines to work with overseas organisations that are leading the development of new or enhanced technology, or conducting engineering research not pursued in the UK. Grants will last three to 12 months and will provide funding of 40 per cent of the full economic costs and 50 per cent of the other costs of the secondment, up to a ceiling of £40,000.
