Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF
Halloween Party Toolkit
Welcome!
Dear Party Host, Thank you for making Halloween Count by hosting a Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF Halloween Party! Whether you and your guests remember Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF as children or if this party is your first introduction to UNICEF, we truly appreciate your support. Your party will help raise awareness of UNICEF’s vital work, in addition to raising funds for UNICEF’s programs around the world. Our collective goal is simple – we will do whatever it takes to reduce the 24,000 preventable deaths of children a day to zero. Zero deaths a day from causes like lack of food, medicines, or clean safe water. We believe in zero and you are joining us in reaching the day when zero children die from preventable causes. Every dollar you raise can provide vaccines against preventable childhood diseases, nutritious food for malnourished children, opportunities to attend school and protection whenever a disaster strikes. We’re here to help! Contact volunteer@unicefusa.org with questions or comments, and be sure to share your party stories and pictures with us! In partnership,
Kristi Burnham Volunteer and Community Partnerships Department U.S. Fund for UNICEF

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF
What is UNICEF?
UNICEF was founded in 1946 to help children in post-war Europe, China, and the Middle East and is sustained completely by voluntary contributions. Now operating in over 150 countries, it has saved more children than any other humanitarian organization. The U.S. Fund for UNICEF saves and protects the lives of children by supporting UNICEF’s work through fundraising, advocacy, and education in the United States. Our mission is to work toward the day when zero children die from preventable causes by doing whatever it takes to give them the basics for a healthy childhood.
Why UNICEF?
• There are 6.7 billion people in the world. 33% or 2.2 billion – are children • 1 billion of those children live in poverty. They are severely deprived of food, drinking water, sanitation facilities, health, and education • Because of UNICEF’s leadership and efforts o The number of children who have been immunized has risen from 5% to 80% o Polio has been reduced by 99% world wide o Measles deaths – which killed more children than war, famine, and natural disaster combined – have been cut by 74% o 80% more children have gained access to clean water since 1960 • 91% of contributions to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF go directly to program services that save children’s lives • The U.S. Fund for UNICEF has earned 5 consecutive 4-star ratings from Charity Navigator, a rating given to only 4% of all charities reviewed.
Believe in Zero
Every day, 24,000 children die – and they don’t have to. They die from causes most people in the U.S. rarely worry about. Malnutrition. Unsafe drinking water. lack of a five-cent vaccine. We believe that number should be zero.
Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF
Since its inception, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF has provided UNICEF more than $3.3 billion - $144 million of which has come from the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign. Created by kids in 1950, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is the Original Kids Helping Kids® fundraising campaign that has empowered generations to save children’s lives around the world during the Halloween season.
What is a Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF Halloween Party?

“Our party was geared toward families. We watched a rival football game, cooked out, and had a bonfire. People put donations in a plastic pumpkin by the door. The whole month of October I kept a box out on my desk at work and next to the vending machine for people to donate change. I agreed to match what my kids could raise Halloween night. The website was great for all of my planning needs!”

“
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak with you today about UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund. UNICEF is the leading global organization working on behalf of the most disadvantaged children. I am a volunteer for the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, and I am happy to be with you today to talk about our work. Since 1946, UNICEF has saved more children than any other humanitarian organization in the world. Our work is simple. 24,000 children die a day from preventable causes. At UNICEF, we’ll do whatever it takes until that number is zero. There are few issues in the world that are as important and as solvable as saving the world’s children. And, because of that, our work transcends all institutions that inherently divide humanity like government, religion, gender, and cultural differences. UNICEF is the leader in child survival because only UNICEF has the ability to address all the issues that affect the lives of children around the world. UNICEF has reach. We work in over 150 countries to provide medical care, education, protection, and emergency relief. We have developed one of the world’s most extensive supply networks to meet the needs of children even before, during, and after a natural disaster or war. UNICEF has experience. No staff is more skilled or capable of improving the world than UNICEF’s global staff of 10,000. From expert doctors to top attorneys to community leaders, we employ people who change the world and work towards the day when zero children die needlessly. UNICEF has access and influence. We have the respect and protection of governments around the world and the support of other humanitarian organizations that only a leader can achieve and maintain. UNICEF has innovation. We provide cutting-edge, cost-efficient solutions that get results – everything from easy-to-use birthing kits to solar powered cold-storage units that safely transport vaccines. UNICEF has efficiency. Since we rely on donor funding, we make sure every dollar reaches the farthest it can. The U.S. Fund for UNICEF supports UNICEF’s work through fundraising,

advocacy, and education in the United States. More than 90% of the contributions we receive go directly to lifesaving programs for children. The U.S. Fund for UNICEF has earned 5 consecutive 4-star ratings from Charity Navigator. Only 4% of charities evaluated by this trusted organization have received its highest ranking for at least 5 straight years. We meet all 20 of the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance Standards for Charity Accountability. UNICEF has resolve. We will not be daunted by war or conflict, natural disaster or disease, geography or logistical complexity. When we say we’ll do whatever it takes to save a child, we mean it. We’ll stop wars to get kids food. We’ll find a way to create a sustainable water source when a well is depleted. We’ll get vaccines to the most remote places. We’ll do research to find answers when none exist. And because of this, we’ll save children when no one else can. We’re creative in our work: After the devastating 2005 earthquake in Pakistan that killed 75,000 citizens, UNICEF recognized that remote areas devastated by the earthquake were unreachable by any traditional mode of transport. To get supplies to those in need, UNICEF found an alternative: We transported much-needed emergency supplies by donkey and saved thousands of lives. We’ve got clout: UNICEF negotiated days of tranquility- cease fires- in a bloody, decadesold war in Sudan to immunize children against killer diseases. Over the years, some 100 million children have been immunized against the most common vaccine-preventable illnesses, saving 2.5 million children each year and reaching 40% of the world’s children, thanks to UNICEF’s efforts. UNICEF knows a little education goes along way. An educated woman is 3 to 5 times more likely to raise healthy, educated children, which means her children are much more likely to raise healthy, educated children. UNICEF is able to break the cycle that dooms so many children to malnutrition, lack of healthcare, and illiteracy. UNICEF provides critical supplies and support for elementary education, helping raise the number of children who receive a primary education worldwide from 50% in 1980 to 88% today. We overcome challenges: In 2005, when the Taliban was in power in Afghanistan, they didn’t allow girls to go to school. So UNICEF funded underground schools for them right under the Taliban’s nose. Once the Taliban fell, UNICEF rushed in school supplies, trained teachers and built latrines so that boys and girls could attend schools. Today, 5 million children attend more than 7,000 schools in Afghanistan.

Sample Speech 1
HIV/AIDS is a killer disease that is devastating communities and will haunt future generations unless great steps are taken now. Countless children have lost their parents to AIDS and pediatric AIDS is on the rise, threatening to reverse much of the progress that we have witnessed since UNICEF began. UNICEF is testing children early in life, intervening with anti-retro viral medication and providing AIDS orphans with healthcare and food so they stay in school and don’t become the next victims. A young orphan girl became the head of household after the death of both parents to HIV/ AIDS. Although her sisters and brothers were in school, she was unable to attend because she had to guard her home against vandals. UNICEF installed windows and a lock on her front door so her home could be protected from looters while the young girl attended school. Whether it’s medicine, health care, education, or emergency relief, UNICEF will be able to deliver it faster and on a greater scale. Whatever it takes, UNICEF can get the job done. We know how to do it. We have the tools and the procedures and the connections. But we need your help. It’s simply a matter of our collective will to say that it’s our problem to fix...that the survival of the world’s children begins with us...each and every one of us. I hope that you will join us in the fight for child survival, by becoming a volunteer, making a donation, writing your Congressperson, or simply telling someone what you’ve learned today. Every activity in support of UNICEF has an impact. What will you do? There are many ways you can get involved with UNICEF. Thank you for attending my Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF Halloween Party! It is wonderful to see everyone in their costumes celebrating Halloween while raising funds for the United Nations Children’s Fund. I would like to take a few minutes to share with you why I decided to turn this Halloween Party into a fundraiser for UNICEF. Every day, 24,000 children die needlessly from totally preventable causes because they lack simple things like clean drinking water, basic childhood medical attention, immunizations against deadly diseases and lack of proper nutrition. At UNICEF, we believe that number should be Zero. UNICEF’s goal is simple: we will do whatever it takes to save children’s lives. Only UNICEF has the global experience, resources, and reach to give children the best hope for survival. Since 1950, millions of adults and children have participated in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF – perhaps you were one of them! Over the years, Americans have fundraised during the Halloween season for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, raising more than $144 million to help UNICEF improve the lives of children all over the world. When you support the 2009 Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign, you can help provide a child with nutritious food to eat, clean water to drink, the opportunity to gain an education, or protection against harm. As you consider the amount of your personal 2009 Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF donation, be assured that every gift – whether large or small – can provide lifesaving support to vulnerable children: • 21¢ can provide a child with a pencil, paper pad and pen to be used in the classroom. • $20.13 can buy one carton of high energy protein biscuits to support and rehabilitate three severely malnourished children for one month. • $232.86 can buy one school-in-a-box kit to provide basic education to at least 80 children during times of crisis to allow them continue their education. I thank you for your support and generosity. If you would like to find out more information about UNICEF and how to get involved year round, please see me, or visit www.unicefusa.org/volunteer Now it’s time to celebrate. Please help yourself to food/drinks, have your photo taken for the Online Volunteer Center (www.unicefusa.org/volunteer) and enjoy the rest of the night! Thank you!
