If you love service and would enjoy helping other students find out more about volunteering, please consider applying to work here. For questions, contact Amy Sponsler at sponsler@illinois.edu Thanksgiving Baskets This year, the Office of Volunteer Programs is continuing its annual Thanksgiving basket drive, and we are looking to YOU to help! Each year, OVP compiles care packages containing food to prepare a Thanksgiving meal for families in need. Grab some friends, your RSO, your dorm floor, or Greek house and make this holiday season special for a family in need. Please contact Brittany Koteles at koteles2@gmail.com for a full list of supplies or an approximated number of baskets your group could contribute. If you contribute 3 baskets or more, each contributing member will recieve a free meal at Chipotle! Baskets must be dropped off in 288 Illini Union by 5pm Wednesday, November 18. Holiday Toy Drive, November 11th – December 9th Make a difference and help brighten the holiday season for children in the local community. Student organizations, individuals, and university staff may sponsor a child by purchasing toys and gift cards costing no more than $15. The toy drive will from November 11 to December 9.

The organization that contributes the most toys will win a prize!! Email OVP@illinois.edu for specific gender and age groups. All toys should be delivered by December 9th to the Office of Volunteer Programs Illini Union Room 288. Alternative Spring Break Info Nights If you are interested in a doing a Fall trip with Alternative Spring Break, participants are still needed for the Fowler Center, Indianapolis Peace Institute, and Operation Breakthrough! Please check them out at illinoisasb.org. Email co_directors@illinoisasb.org if you are interested! If you can't do a Fall trip but are still interested in ASB, come to our Spring Info Nights to learn more about ASB and see what trips we're sending this spring! Info nights are Monday 11/2 at 6pm in Latzer Hall, Wednesday 11/11 at 5pm in Murphy Room, and Thursday, 11/12 at 6pm in Latzer Hall; these rooms are located in the University YMCA. You'll get a chance to talk to current board members and get all of your questions answered! Spring applications will be available on www.IllinoisASB.org; Site-Facilitator applications are due November 30th, general applications are due December 7th! Piato’s Café, The Body Therapy Shop, & Eastern Illinois Food Bank Fund Drive, November 7th Piato’s Café and The Body Therapy Shop are partnering with the Eastern Illinois Food Bank to hold a food and fund drive on November 7th, 2009 from 9am-2pm at Lincoln Square Mall. The event will include a raffle, silent auction, and children’s games. Volunteers will be needed to run children’s games and supervise auction items. The food and funds we provide will help the Eastern Illinois Food Bank to supply food assistance to more than 44,000 men, women and children each month. Provena Hospice: Memory Teddy Bears, November 7th Memory Teddy Bears are made from the clothing of a loved one who has died. These bears are a keepsake of that special person and can help the bereaved in the grieving and healing process. Volunteers are needed to help make teddy bears. No sewing experience is necessary. If interested please contact Christy Daly at 217-353-3441 or Christina.daly@provena.org Student Leadership Opportunity: Resolve 2009 Conference, November 5th – 8th The National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness, student leaders and student groups around the country are coming together to launch the Resolve to Fight Poverty at the Resolve 2009 conference at Loyola University in Chicago on November 5-8, 2009. You'll hear the latest on the issues, learn the skills to take action, build alliances and together, we will do what it takes to ensure everyone can live in a world without poverty. If you are interested please contact Gia at gialewis@ywcauofi.org or 217-344-0721 Volunteer for SmileHealthy Fundraiser, November 14th SmileHealthy is a local non-profit based in downtown Champaign that provides dental care to lower income families. Volunteers are needed for their fundraiser tailgating event on Dad's weekend on November 14. It'll most likely be located near E-14, and volunteers will be selling raffle tickets for gift certificate prizes, handing out pamphlets, and having a good time. Champaign Downtown Association Holiday Decoration Volunteers, November 21st The Champaign Downtown Association is looking for volunteers on Saturday, November 21st starting at noon to help with the setting up of holiday decorations. There are around 200 poles to decorate and a tree to assemble. We can have everything up in a matter of hours if we get 20-30 people in groups of 2. They would need to bring pliers, gloves, appropriate clothing for cool to cold weather and ladders if they have access to them. Contact info@downtownchampaign.com. Salt & Light Babysitter Volunteer The Salt & Light ministry, 1512 W. Anthony Dr., Champaign, is in need of a daycare/babysitter on Wednesdays from 11:30am - 1pm for their church services. If interested contact Melany Jackson at meljackson@yahoo.com or 816-820-6872 LINC Service-Learning Courses for Spring 2010 Consider registering for a new course entitled LINC-Learning in Community. As a result of this course, you can expect to improve your project skills and to contribute to an important problem that benefits a nonprofit organization. LINC is a service-learning course in which teams of students work on real projects proposed by community partners. There are 16 sections of the class for spring 2010 (ENG 298, TR, 12:30-1:50, 3 credit hours), with a wide range of community partners and project opportunities. This academic internship program focused on the nonprofit sector is held in partnership with Georgetown University and provides students with the opportunity to gain valuable professional experience. Youth Mentors Needed The Mental Health Center is currently looking for mentors for the program in Rantoul. Mentors will be matched with a youth between the ages of 9 and 13 and will meet with them for one hour a week for the duration of the school year. Male mentors are greatly needed! Students Serve Grants Students Serve, a national 501(c) 3 provides money to college students so that they can use their knowledge and talents to make a difference in the community. Starting Thursday October 1st, any college student with an idea about how to address a local, national, or global problem can submit the online application at StudentsServe.org. Global Engagement Summer Institute Are you passionate about global change, committed to learning by doing, and ready to engage in hands-on international development? The Global Engagement Summer Institute at Northwestern University will equip you to work directly with grassroots NGOs and local communities in Uganda, India, Nicaragua, or Bolivia, leverage the strengths of the communities in which you live

and work abroad, live with a host family and immerse yourself in another culture for 8 weeks, and work in teams to design and implement an original development project in environmental development, microfinance, youth and education, gender and development, global health, social enterprise, and more!!
