BIHAR FLOOD RELIEF - RTI AREA 2
Over a million people have been affected by floods in three districts of Northern Indian state of Bihar. Area 2 of Round Table India has taken up this task of collecting and sending the relief material to Bihar. This Community Service Initiative is being headed by the Area 2 Community Service Convenor Tr. Ajay Jalan of Madras South Round Table 39.
Round Table India Area 2, under the Chairmanship of Tr. Sakthivel Raja who is a Legend for his efforts in Tsunami Rehab, has contributed whole heartedly towards the Bihar Flood Relief. Tablers of Round Table India Area 2 have worked beyond their limits to collect and pack the relief material to be sent to Bihar. The banks of the Kosi river overflowed days after the part of the river in neighboring Nepal breached an embankment there. Bihar's districts of Supaul, Araria and Madhepura which border Nepal are the worst affected. Floods in South Asia are common. About 28m people were affected last year.

Round Table India - Area 2 Contribution towards Bihar Flood Relief
Madras Round Table 1: Medicines donated worth Rs. 5 lacs for the relief victims. Madras Mylapore Round Table 3 has contributed Rs.30,000/- towards the flood relief. Madras West Round Table 10: Rs. 1 lac already sent for the relief operations through another NGO and they are sending 5 volunteers along with a doctor from Shaker Netralaya to Purnea. 300 eye drops bottle have been sponsored by them. Rs. 20,000/- has been contributed towards the relief fund. Madras Esplanade Round Table 30 has contributed Rs.30,000/- towards the relief fund. Madras South Round Table 39: 12.5 tons of rice which would cater to 1,00,000 people was contributed and sent to the victims by Jet Airways on 16/09/2008. MSRT 39 has contributed Rs. 15,000/- worth medicines. Relief materials were contributed. Tr. Ajay Jalan had allocated premises in his own godown for temporary storage and segregation of materials for project at Broadway, Parrys. Tr. Mukesh Bhandari has contributed Rs.51,000/- towards relief operations to another NGO. Madras Midtown Round Table 42 has contributed 400 brand new bed sheets towards the relief. Madras Central Round Table 82 : Tr. Shiv, Table MCRT 82 sponsored Cookies from Cookie Man for 1 thousand twin packs of cookies. 3 bundles of relief materials already sent to the broadway godown Madras Cosmopolitan Round Table 94: Has sent medicines worth Rs. 75,000/- and Rs.50,000/in two batches. Tr. J.S. Krishna of MCRT 94 had obtained permission from Jet airways to fly relief materials free of cost from Chennai to Kolkata. Madras Metro Round Table 95: Has donated Rs.70,000/- towards relief fund. They sent their weekly SMS, for seeking help towards the Relief Operations, pan India. They have also collected and packed the relief material from the tablers of Area 2 and have delivered the same to the godown. Madras Anchorage Round Table 100: Has donated Rs.10,000/- towards relief fund through another NGO. Pondicherry Rivage Round Table 104: Has contributed Rs. 10,000/- towards the relief fund. Madras Sterling Round Table 123: Has contributed 150 kg of bleaching powder and HT Linesh Kumar has donated Rs. 1 Lac to PATANJALI APDA RAHAT KOSH PATANJALI YOG PEETH TRUST. Madras Heritage Round Table 124: Has contributed Rs. 24,000 towards the relief fund & Tr. Niraj Shah from MHRT 124 has contributed some clothes and footwear Madras Spice Round Table 159: Has donated 159 packs each of Milk powder 500 gm, Biscuits pack & Cloths & shoes etc Madras Knights Round Table 181: Chairman Tr. Mukesh had arranged a vehicle to collect relief materials from the tablers residence and delivered to the godown on 14.9.08. They have also contributed 1000 packs of odomos, 24 mattress set with pillows, clothes, 1000 packets of Britania biscuits, 150 new bed sheets and Rs. 5000 worth of medicines.

Captain Tr. JS Krishna of MCRT 94 obtains permission
to Airlift RTI Area 2 relief material thro Jet Airways
A huge initiative by Captain Tr. JS Krishna of MCRT 94 who has obtained permission to airlift the relief material to Bihar through Jet Airways Cargo @ 5 tons per day. RTI Area 2 is extremely proud of this initiative and Tr. Krishna is being conferred with Louis Marchessi Fellow Medallion by the President RTI Tr. Pranay.
Flood Situation in Bihar
Authorities say they have so far rescued more than 300,000 people left stranded after heavy monsoon rains caused the Kosi river to flood. However, more than twice that number are still homeless and in urgent need of aid, and relief is being hampered by extensive damage to roads. The waters have affected vast numbers of people in India and Nepal.
