“SETTLERS of the FUTURE” SCENARIO: Your Council has been designated to explore a newly created settlement and lead the citizens by generating revenue and purchasing the necessities of everyday living. You must complete PART I before receiving PART II-Rules and Instructions at the ECC Registration booth. Each council begins with $250 million and a Settlement population of 5,000 citizens. Your council is responsible for “Establishing a government” by completing the subtasks that will help you make future decisions in other tasks presented. (See PART I) Objectives of this year’s council challenge: 1- To complete the most Political Tasks which will help you make the most money to build your future city. 2- To upgrade your settlement into a City. This is done by purchasing required infrastructure (buildings and developments) for a colony, then a village, a town and finally a City. There are 50 buildings and developments needed to complete each upgrade. A Settlers of the future game board contains the list of buildings and developments along with their prices. This is found in PART II—Rules and Instructions. To upgrade your settlement into a Colony (requires 10,000 citizens) To upgrade your colony into a Village (requires 15,000 citizens) To upgrade your village into a Town (requires 20,000 citizens) To upgrade your town into a City (requires 25,000 citizens) UPGRADING: purchasing more buildings and developments to support more citizens’ lives. You will purchase buildings and developments with money you make from completing Political Tasks and purchasing “Poll cards” (See PART II-Rules after completing PART I.) 3- To complete as many of the 4 Political Tasks as time will allow. Each task may contain subtasks which you will turn in once they are completed for money. It is important to read the directions for each of the tasks thoroughly and carefully. 4- Turn in your council’s punch cards at the end of PART I to the Eccles Conference Center registration booth. Money will awarded after the challenge based on attendance of breakout sessions. 5- Make money by being the most creative with your council’s Coat of Arms. ($500 million will be awarded at the end of the challenge based on ECC Judges. See PART I) Money will be given at the end of the game based on population, correct answers, and/or thorough answers given in the Political Tasks. The Council with the most money and citizens at the end of the challenge will be the winners of this year’s “Settlers of the Future” Challenge. Challenge winners will be announced at the end of this evenings dance. Good Luck! 1 PART I “Establishing a government” Read each subtask and their instructions carefully. As a committee elect your settlement and future city’s mayor, describe or list what your ideal mayor will believe and do for your citizens. A list of 10 general issues is given to you as examples to base your ideal mayor’s “platform”. If you can think of other issues that are more important to your city than the ones given, you may include those as well. You must list or describe at least 6 issues. As you list or describe your ideal mayor, you must include: a) Describe the problem associated with the issue you have chosen b) what your mayor’s stance is on the issue and c) what his or her city plan of action will be for the given issue. ISSUES: 1) City Crime 2) Death Penalty 3) Drug prevention 4) Education 5) Immigration 6) First Amendment Rights 7) Gay Rights 8) Guns 9) Terrorism 10) Women’s Rights 3 Subtask 2- What is your Mission Statement? Every city or settlement has a mission, a purpose and a reason for being. As a committee, council with each other to answer three key questions and apply it to your Mission Statement. 1) What are the opportunities or needs that exist in the settlement or city? (purpose of the settlement or city) 2) What are we doing to address these needs? (The business end of the settlement/city and council to make things run acceptably to the citizens?). 3) What principles or beliefs guide our work? (The values and beliefs as a foundation). Your mission Statement should… • • • • • • Express your settlements/city’s purpose in a way that inspires support and ongoing commitment from citizens. Motivate those who live in your settlement/city to contribute to the overall well being of the government. Be articulated in a way that is convincing and easy to grasp. Use proactive verbs to describe what the settlement/city does. Be free of jargon (not wordy or artsy). Be short enough so that anyone connected to the settlement/city can readily repeat it. This statement must be 2-3 paragraphs in length and follow the guidelines set forth above. Here is an example of a mission statement: CENTER FOR ECONOMICS & LAW CHARTER SCHOOL Mission Statement: The mission of the Center for Economics and Law Charter School is to ensure that the children of Philadelphia will be given opportunities, experiences and academic preparation needed for employment and/or post secondary education upon graduation. Our curriculum will focus on economics, entrepreneurship and commerce and the interaction of law in these and other areas. Special attention will be afforded to the study of the emerging global economy and the effect on different cultures throughout the world and the United States. Parents, students, community and industry leaders will play and integral part in helping the school achieve this goal. 4 Subtask 3- “Coat of Arms” In your packet of instructions you will find a “shield” and coloring utensils for creating a coat of arms. What is a coat of arms you might ask? Here is a history of the Coat of Arms. During the Middle Ages, knights used a coat of arms to identify themselves. One man in armor looked a lot like another, so the coat of arms was used to identify a knight in battle. In a society where few people could read and write, pictures were very important. A coat of arms was more like a label for instant identification than it was like a painting. You wanted to know instantly who was coming toward you, so you could know which side he was on. Coats of arms later took on further significance and meanings. They also became a way of showing membership in the aristocracy, after they lost their significance in warfare. Only the oldest son would inherit his family’s coat of arms unchanged; his younger brothers would usually add a symbol to show who they were. The symbol a younger son added was often a smaller picture placed in the middle of the shield. When a woman married, especially if she had no brothers, the coat of arms of her family was often added to her husband’s arms. Sometimes the arms were quartered, or divided into parts. In this case, the man’s family coat of arms was in the upper left quarter (as you look at the coat of arms) and lower right, while the woman’s family’s arms were in the other two quarters. Shields are generally "read" like a book, starting at the upper left, going across and then down. A coat of arms can have several parts. The main part is a shield, which can have a crest above it, a motto, and animals supporting the shield. You will create the shield from the coat of arms. The shield you will create will contain pictures symbolizing your settlement and future city’s ideals, values and characteristics. Your task will be to design, create and establish this shield to differentiate your settlement and future city from others. Instructions: Creatively divide your shield into three or four sections. The idea is to be creative and distinctive from other Settlement and Cities. (Examples of shields provided) 1234At least one animal must be included on your shield Come up with a motto or phrase to include at or near the bottom Create a city seal and place it somewhere on the shield Include in writing the definitions and reasons you included the various pictures on the shield. This is where you will interpret the shield and the symbols. You may do this on the back of the shield. 5- Your Settlement/City’s Name must be clearly visible somewhere on the shield. 5 EXAMPLES OF SHIELD SECTIONS: EXAMPLES OF ANIMALS TO USE: Lion, Bear, Boar, Eagle, Horse, Dragon, and Griffin After completing the coat of arms and the other two subtasks, go to the ECC registration booth and obtain tape. Tape your shield to the wall in the auditorium to be judged. You will be handed Task II-Rules and Instructions and the money for completing PART I. ($750 million) 6
