Techniques nominally associated with the application of Taqiya include: – Demanding evidence: Islamic spokesmen practice a form of taquiya defined in psychology as cognitive denial by repetitive and extreme requests for “evidence” and “proof” which they know cannot be, or cannot be easily, disclosed. 8 Al Taqqiya Taqiya facilitates the evasion from responsibility and/or the penetration of an opposition. Techniques nominally associated with the application of Taqiya include: – Diversion: Questions addressing the culpability or responsibility of Islam and will be directed to another topic such as the plight of the Palestinians, the perceived U.S.Israeli axis, or some other theme effectively shifting the focus away from Islam. Islam’s inherent anti-Semitism will be countered with misleading and historically exaggerated references to the alleged status enjoyed by Jews and Nonbelievers under Islamic subjugation.. 9 Al Taqqiya – Exploiting cognitive dissonance: • Islamic spokesmen baffle interviewers, listeners and readers by using double talk, clichés and platitudes concerning Islam. A state of cognitive dissonance – holding two contradictory beliefs and attempting to resolve them – is induced in the target audience as they attempt to reconcile the claim that Islam is a peaceful religion with the dissonant facts of terrorist operations, beheadings, etc. 10 Al Taqqiya – The Islamic “defense” script: Islamic spokesmen repeat similar themes ranging from Islam is tolerant and peace loving to the claim that mandatory wearing of the veil offers women more freedom (therefore women in Muslim countries are “freer” than women in western countries). The effect of such defensive scripts and their sweeping generalities effectively precludes further critical examination of the underlying issue. 11 Al Taqqiya – The Islamic “defense” script: • Islamic spokesmen repeat similar themes ranging from Islam is tolerant and peace loving to the claim that mandatory wearing of the veil offers women more freedom (therefore women in Muslim countries are “freer” than women in western countries). The effect of such defensive scripts and their sweeping generalities effectively precludes further critical examination of the underlying issue. 12 Al Taqqiya – “Islam has been hijacked” theme: • uncritically accepted by the media and statesmen, • proposes that the following are precepts of a peaceful religion. – jihad – subjugation – obligatory conflict between the House of Islam and the House of War – the historical traditions of commerce raiding on other tribes and caravans, the resulting murder, theft and rape, which later evolved into “military expeditions” characterized by slaughter, slavery and plunder – the Quranic Chapter (8) devoted to “Spoils of War”, • proposes that the ongoing expressions of these embedded values are exceptions to the rule initiated by misguided individuals, who, curiously, enjoy wide spread popular support. 13 Al Taqqiya – Manipulating Ambiguity: • Employment of dual standards in condemning transgressions committed against, and by, Islam. • Transgressions against Islam are to be denounced at high volume while transgressions by Islam are to be denied. • Direct questions addressing acts of Islamic transgressions will be evaded. 14 Al Taqqiya – Out of Context Defense: • Regardless of the accuracy of the recording of any previous Islamic statements betraying hostilities against Non-Muslims, the opponent is to be told that his understanding of the words are “out of context”. • This has the practical effect of stopping the debate because the opponent will not have taken the time to document “the context” before challenging the speaker. • This results in the original message being sent and delivered to the faithful, and an obfuscation and denial being sent to, and accepted by, the non-Muslim listener. 15 Al Taqqiya – Outwitting: • The matter under discussion is not to be addressed. • The opponent is to be diverted from the subject and the topic is to be obfuscated by raising mystical references to God, allegation of racism, Islamphobia, or some other charge that causes the questioner to retreat or desist. • Techniques include claims that translations from Arabic to English makes communications with non Arab speakers problematic. • Using unvetted translators and unverified translations offer another opportunity to deceive the media and other opponents. 16 Al Taqqiya – Tactical Denial: • Rather than admitting that a proposition concerning a state of affairs can be partly true, an Islamic spokesman will deny a claim or proposition in absolute terms. • For Example: “It is impossible to be a Muslim and a terrorist,” which is false and “Islam forbids suicide” which it partially true but does not exclude voluntary self destruction in the defense of Islam. 17 Al Taqqiya – Tactical Use of Children to Shift the Message. • An exceptionally effective counter media technique incorporates children into imagery, shifting the message to one of victimhood and suffering. • Conversely, images of explosive laden children are explained away as isolated, family level, jokes. 18 Al Taqqiya – Victimhood. • By playing the role of the victim, one can evade responsibility or culpability or change the subject. • Useful themes include actual victimhood (as in Bosnia) or perceived victimhood (racism, islamiphobia). • The victimhood theme is especially effective to counter the self defense efforts of Non-Muslims who are responding to initial Islamic provocations. 19 Al Taqqiya Sources: • • www.ci-ce-ct.com/Feature%20articles/02-12-2002.asp, accessed 16 November 2004. http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/quran/003.qmt.html#003.028, accessed 16 November 2004 003.028 YUSUFALI: Let not the believers Take for friends or helpers Unbelievers rather than believers: if any do that, in nothing will there be help from Allah: except by way of precaution, that ye may Guard yourselves from them. PICKTHAL: Whoso disbelieveth in Allah after his belief - save him who is forced thereto and whose heart is still content with the Faith - but whoso findeth ease in disbelief: On them is wrath from Allah. Theirs will be an awful doom. SHAKIR: He who disbelieves in Allah after his having believed, not he who is compelled while his heart is at rest on account of faith, but he who opens (his) breast to disbelief-- on these is the wrath of Allah, and they shall have a grievous chastisement. • • • 20 Kitman • Mental reservation and dissimulation or concealment of malevolent intentions. • The word kitman comes from the verb katama, which means to hide, to conceal - hiding things still in process until they are complete. • One Muslim perspective is that in order to be saved from their opponents Muslims should keep hush-hush on things that are still in preparation. • To this type of hiding, kitman is the best policy. In this regard, the Prophet says in the hadith: “Seek fulfillment for things you want to finish in kitman.” 21 Kitman • Kitman is of much greater importance when we realize that it is a type of trust. • When one discloses some of his secrets to you and asks you to keep them secret from others, then it is your duty to keep them secret as required by that person. • Even between the two spouses, they have to practice kitman, i.e. they are in no way allowed to talk to others about the details or generalities of their conjugal life or intimate relations. • Kitman may extend to cover the secrets of the whole state at the time of war and peace where a person who is loyal to his people cannot divulge to anyone or tell the enemy about his country’s affairs. Khomeini did not tell direct lies but used many half truths based on well established khod’eh principles. For example, he pledged female equality in Iran, but qualified the pledge with phrases such as “in accordance with Islam.” (See Amir Taheri, The Spirit of Allah: Khomeini and the Islamic Revolution, Adler and Adler, ISBN: 0-917561-04-X, 1985), p. 229 23 Tanfih Taking the sting out of one’s potential rivals or enemies (See Amir Taheri, The Spirit of Allah: Khomeini and the Islamic Revolution, Adler and Adler, ISBN: 0-917561-04-X, 1985). P. 230 24 ZAKAT • ZAKAT is one of the five pillars of Islam and is erroneously thought to be simply alms giving for the poor. • It is obligatory to distribute Zakat to the following eight categories of recipients – – – – – – – – The Poor. Those Short of Money. Zakat Workers. Those Whose Hearts are to Reconciled. Those Purchasing Their Freedom. Those in Debt. Those Fighting for Allah. Travelers Needing Money. 25 ZAKAT • The obligatory disbursements for those fighting for Allah constitute a funding mechanism for combat, combat support and combat service support operations. • The obligatory disbursements for travelers needing money defrays personal expenses and transportation costs associated with individual movement to and from conflict zones. 26 ZAKAT • Those Whose Hearts Are To Be Reconciled: – Must be Muslim. – Given to ensure propagation of the faith in initial stages. – If recent converts and are alienated from their kin. – Those to be reconciled include: 27 ZAKAT • Those Whose Hearts Are To Be Reconciled: – Those to be reconciled include: • Chief personages of a people (with weak or fledgling institutions needing economic support to improve or whose peers may be expected to enter Islam). • Heads of a people who collect zakat for Islam from Muslims living near them who refuse to pay it. • Heads of a people who fight an enemy for Islam at considerable expense and trouble to themselves. 28 Jihad • Surah 8-39 And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism, i.e. worshiping others besides Allah) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allah Alone [in the whole world] But if they cease (worshiping others besides Allah), then certainly, Allah is All-Seer of what they do. • Muhammad said: I am commanded by Allah to go and fight all the people of the world until they confess there is no God but Allah, and I am his messenger, and to pray five times a day and to give alms. And if they do that, their blood will be spared from me. From the Hadith, recorded by Sahih Al-Bukhari 29 Jihad The progressive steps for Muhammad were: – Fight those who persecuted you (in Medina). – Conquer those who reject Islam in your region (The Arabian Desert). – Conquer the world in the name of Islam. • No Quranic revelation contradicted this final command of jihad, and it remains the goal of Islam today. 30 Jihad • THREE STAGES OF JIHAD – Weakened Stage – Preparation Stage – Jihad Stage 31 Jihad • THREE STAGES OF JIHAD Weakened Stage (The Meccan Phase) Sura 2:256 There is no compulsion in religion Sura 5:105 O you who believe! Take care of your ownselves. If you follow the (right) guidance [and enjoin what is right (Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbid what is wrong (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden)] no one can come to you from those who are in error. The return of you all is to Allah, then He will inform you about (all) that which you used to do. 32 Jihad • THREE STAGES OF JIHAD Preparation Stage (Reasonably influential minority) Sura 8:60 And make ready against them all you can of power, including steeds of war (tanks, planes, missiles artillery) to threaten the enemy of Allah and your enemy, and others besides whom, you may not know but whom Allah does know. (The Nobel Quran) Note: Commentary in this version of the Quran, PRINTED IN SAUDI ARABIA, is aimed at contemporary actors. 33 Jihad THREE STAGES OF JIHAD Jihad Stage (Medina Stage – Minority with Strength and Power) Sura 2:191 And kill them (all opponents of Muhammad) wherever you find then, and turn them out from where they have turned you out. Sura 4;89 They wish that you reject Faith, as they have rejected (faith), and thus that you all become equal (like one another). So take not Auliya (protectors or friends) from them till the emigrate in the Way of Allah to (Mushammad). But if they turn their back (from Islam) take (hold of) them and and kill them wherever you find them, and take neither Auliya (protectors or friends) nor helpers from them. 34 Jihad THREE STAGES OF JIHAD Jihad Stage (Medina Stage – Minority with Strength and Power) Sura 8:13,17 I will cast terror into the hearts of those who have disbelieves, so strike them over the necks, and smite all their fingers and does. You killed them not, but Allah killed them. Sura 8:60 And make ready against them all you can of power, including steeds of war (tanks, planes, missiles, artillery) to threaten the enemy of Allah and your enemy, and others besides whom, you may not know but whom Allah does know. 35 Jihad THREE STAGES OF JIHAD Jihad Stage (Medina Stage – Minority with Strength and Power) Sura 9:5 Kill the Mushrikun (polytheists, pagans, Idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) wherever you find them, and capture them and besiege them, and lie in wait for them in each and every ambush. Sura 9:29 Fight those who (1) believe not in Allah, (2) nor in the Last Day, (3) nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad) (4) and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (Islam) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), until the pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued. 36 Jihad THREE STAGES OF JIHAD Jihad Stage (Medina Stage – Minority with Strength and Power) Sura 9:23 Oh you who believe! Fight those of the disbelievers who are close to you and let them find harshness in you; and know that Allah is with those who are Al-Muttaqun (The Pious - See V.2:2). 37 Jihad THREE STAGES OF JIHAD Jihad Stage (Medina Stage – Minority with Strength and Power) Sura 47:4 So, when you meet (in fight - Jihad in Allah’s Cause) those who believe, smite (their) necks till when you have killed and wounded many of the, then bind a bond firmly (upon them, i.e. take them as captives). Thereafter (is the time) either for generosity (i.e. free them without ransom) or ransom (according to what benefits Islam), until war lays down its burden. Thus (you are ordered by Allah to continue in carrying out Jihad against the disbelievers till they embrace Islam and are saved from the punishment in the Hell-Fire or at least come under your protection), but if it had nee Allah Will, He Himself could certainly have punished them (without you). But (He lets you fight) in order to test some of you with others. But those who are killed in the way of Allah, He will never let their deeds be lost. 38 High Birthrate • Westerners are not able to maintain their present numbers • Only Poland, Ireland, Malta, and Israel have naturally growing populations. • Muslims have some of the most robust birth rates in the world. • John R. Weeks study: Countries with large numbers of Muslims have a crude birth rate of 42 per thousand. • Developed countries have a crude birth rate of just 13 per thousand. • 6 children per Muslim woman, 1.7 per woman in the developed countries. 39 Iconoclasm • “The Breaking of Icons” • Destruction / Prohibition of opposing Icons. • Suppression of Non-Islamic Icons creating a void to be filled with Islamic values or Icons 40 Iconoclasm • Examples: – Dhimmis are prohibited from external manifestations of worship • • • • • • Ringing of bells Processions with Crosses Solemn funerals Public sale of religious objects Construction of new places of worship Conversion of large churches to Mosques 41 Iconoclasm • Examples: – – – – – – Afghanistan: 1500 year old Buddhist Statues Twin Towers of the World Trade Center Pentagon England: St George’s Cross Oldham, England: statuary of Owls (town mascot) Bologna Basilica (15th Century fresco depicting Mohammad in hell, being devoured by demons.) – Bosnia: Muslim attacks on the flag, anthem, insignia and coat of arms for the Republika Srpska – Conversion of Churches to Mosques 42 Immigration • Immigration in the Name of God, a popular book in the Middle East advocating immigration for the purpose of spreading Islam. • Immigration gates to the US were thrown open by the 1965 Immigration Act. 43 Disassociation • Prohibition against close association with NonMuslims. • Recurring and heavily emphasized theme in the Koran, the Hadiths and in Islamic Law. • Grave legal and religious repercussions for the Muslim allying himself with Non-Muslims against Muslims. • Obvious exceptions include employment but outside of those few exceptions, Islam encourages disassociation. 44 Disassociation • Forsaking fellow Muslims in favor of Non-Muslims is an act of un-belief, nearly equating with apostasy having three profound consequences for the offending Muslim: – loss of spiritual salvation – social isolation – exposure to the risk of a death sentence 45 Disassociation • Do not obey unbelievers (Koran) – Sura 3:149 O you who believe! If you obey those who disbelieve, they will send you back on your heels and you will turn back (from Faith) as losers. – Sura 33:48 And obey not the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and harm them not (in revenge for their harming you till you are ordered). 46 Disassociation • Do not take for friends or helpers (Koran) – Sura 3:28 Let not the believers take disbelievers as Auliya (protectors or helpers or friends) instead of the believers, and whoever does that will never be helped by Allah in anyway, except if you fear a danger from them. And Allah warns you against Himself (His punishment), and to Allah is the final return. – Sura 4:139 Those who take disbelievers for Auliya (protectors or helpers or friends) instead of believers, do they seek honour, power and glory with them? Verily, then to Allah belongs all honour, power and glory. – Sura 4: 144 O you who believe! Take not as Auliya (protectors or helpers or friends) disbelievers instead of believers. Do you wish to offer Allah a manifest proof against yourselves? 47 Disassociation • Do not take for friends or helpers (Koran) – Sura 5:57 O you who believe! Take not as Auliya (protectors and helpers) those who take your religion as a mockery and fun from among those who received the Scripture (Jews and Christians) before you, and nor from among the disbelievers; and fear Allah if you indeed are true believers. – Sura 9:23 O you who believe! Take not as Auliya (supporters and helpers) your fathers and your brothers if the prefer disbelief to Belief. And whoever of your does so, then he is one of the Zalimun (Wrongdoers) 48 Disassociation • Do not take for friends or helpers (Koran) – Sura 9:29 Fight against those who (1) believe not in Allah, (2) nor in the Last Day, (3) nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad) (4) and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (Islam) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) until the pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued. 49 Disassociation • Do not take for friends or helpers (Koran) – Sura 60:1 O you who believe! Take not My enemies and your enemies (i.e. disbelievers and polytheists) as friends showing then affection towards them, while they have disbelieved in what has come to you of the truth (i.e. Islamic Monotheism, the Qu’ran, and Muhammad), and have driven out the Messenger (Muhammad) and yourselves (from your homeland) because you believe in Allah your Lord! If you have come forth to strive in My Cause and to seek My Good Pleasure, (then take not these disbelievers and polytheists, as your friends). You show friendship to then in secret, while I am All-Aware of what you conceal and what you reveal. And whosoever of you (Muslims) does that, then he has gone (far) astray from the Straight Path 50 Disassociation • Do not take for friends or helpers (Koran) – Sura 60:2 Should they gain the upper hand over you, they would behave to you as enemies, and stretch forth their hands and the tongues against you with evil, and they desire that you should disbelieve. – Sura 60:3 Neither your relatives nor your children will benefit you on the Day of Resurrection (against Allah). He will judge between you. And Allah is the All-Seer of what you do. 51 Disassociation • Do not take for friends or helpers (Koran) – Sura 60:13 O you who believe! Take not as friends the people who incurred the Wrath of Allah . Surely, they have despaired of (receiving any good in) the Hereafter, just as the disbelievers have despaired of those (buried) in graves (that they will not be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection) 52 Muzzling of Opponents • Unrecognized, but increasing, phenomena. • Free exchange of critical ideas (FREE SPEECH) is to be actively suppressed. • Techniques: – Allegations of Racism, Islamophobia – Legal Action (CAIR) – Intimidation – Murder 53 Muzzling of Opponents • Volume 3, Book 41, Number 591: Narrated Al-Mughira bin Shu'ba: • The Prophet said, "Allah has forbidden for you, (1) to be undutiful to your mothers, (2) to bury your daughters alive, (3) to not to pay the rights of the others (e.g. charity, etc.) and (4) to beg of men (begging). And Allah has hated for you (1) vain, useless talk, or that you talk too much about others, (2) to ask too many questions, (in disputed religious matters) and (3) to waste the wealth (by extravagance). • http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/fundamentals/hadithsunnah/bukhari/041 .sbt.html#003.041.589 54 Muzzling of Opponents • Attacks on Truth • Omar b. ol-Khattab, the day following Muhammad’s death, threatened to cut the throat of anyone saying that Muhammad was dead. • Source: Ali Dashti, 23 Years: A Study of the Prophetic Career of Mohammad, (Mazda Publications, Costa Mesa, CA: 1994) p. 62. The FBI ascribed the shooting to “road rage.” – On July 4, 2002, at the Los Angeles International Airport counter of El Al, the Israeli national airline, a Muslim named Hesham Mohamed Ali Hadayet started shooting at people. He killed two. The FBI initially said that “there’s nothing to indicate terrorism.” However, after it came to light that Hadayet may have been involved with Al-Qaeda and was known for his hatred for Israel, the FBI finally did classify this as a terrorist act. 80 Voluntary Accommodation • DENIAL AND OBFUSCATION – The Beltway Snipers, who were linked to eighteen shootings and ten murders in the Washington, D.C. area in October 2002, were two converts to Islam: John Muhammad and Lee Malvo. Before they were caught investigators ascribed the crimes to an angry white man ; the perpetrators turned out to be two black men. After they were caught, the media persistently referred to John Muhammad as John Williams, ignoring his conversion to Islam and consequent name change. And even after Malvo s drawings of Osama bin Laden (whom he labeled a servant of Allah ) and ramblings about jihad were revealed, authorities continued to downplay the possibility that the shootings had anything to do with Islam or terrorism. 81 Voluntary Accommodation • DENIAL AND OBFUSCATION – On August 6, 2003 in Houston, a Muslim named Mohammed Ali Alayed slashed the throat of his friend Ariel Sellouk, who was Jewish. Alayed had broken off his friendship with Sellouk when he began to become more devout in his Islam. On the night of the murder, he called him and they went out to a bar together before going back to Alayed s apartment, where Alayed slit Sellouk s throat, nearly beheading him. The two were not seen arguing at the bar. Although Alayed killed Sellouk after the fashion of jihadist murders in Iraq and went to a mosque after committing the murder, authorities said could not find any evidence that Selloukwas killed because of his race or religion. Alayed s defense attorney noted that there was no evidence to substantiate the hate element. 82 Co-Option of Key Govt Officials • Exploitation of Officials – Ideological / Islamic predisposition – Officials who are ignorance of the tools and techniques of penetration – Soft on immigration – Soft on crime – Officials who need a constituency and advance legislation in return for political or financial support 83 Mosques and Services • Services – Key elements that facilitated the establishment and maintenance of an Islamic state include: - mosques - buildings used for public worship - medresses - schools for religious instruction - imarets - inns or hospices - zawiyas- small dwellings for board and instruction - hospitals – medical out reach - caravansarays - way stations and roadside inns for caravans - fountains – water for drinking, cooking, hygiene - endowments of the ulemans and dervishes responsible for these institutions with lands, assistants and revenues to ensure sustained operations. 84 Mosques and Services • Mosque: Not a Church – Used as: • a place for worship • weapons depot • military planning headquarters Mark A.
