Explanation
Obon is a three-day Buddhist holiday, usually August 13, 14, and 15. During this time the spirits of the dead are said to return to their former homes and families. People light lanterns to guide the spirits and perform bon dances for their entertainment. The week of obon is considered bon-yasumi, or bon vacation, and many people return to their hometowns or take trips.
Keiro-no-hi, Respect-for-the-Aged Day, is September 15. This is a day for wishing the older people of the nation a long life and thanking them for their many contributions to society over the years.
Shubun-no-hi is Autumnal Equinox Day which falls on the 23 or 24 of September. During the week of the equinox Buddhist temples hold special services and people pay their respects at their ancestors' graves.
Taiiku-no-hi, or Sports Day, is celebrated on the second Monday of October to promote the mental and physical health of the people through the enjoyment of sports. The day was established in commemoration of the Tokyo Olympics which were held in 1964.
Bunka-no-hi, or Culture Day, is observed on November 3. It promotes an awareness of the arts and sciences and also gives thanks to those who have contributed to the advancement of culture. Medals are granted by the government to people selected for their significant cultural contributions.
Kinrokansha-no-hi, or Labor Thanksgiving Day, is November 23. On this day the nation honors laborers, promotes respect for labor, and celebrates the nation's bounty.
Tenno-tanjobi, or the Emperor's birthday, is December 23. It is customary for the Imperial Family to appear on the balcony of the Imperial Palace and exchange greetings with the public, who are allowed to enter the compound of the Imperial Palace on this day.
Christmas eve in Japan, almost Japanese people are not christian but we celebrate the day with cakes. Most of people spend a time with their special peoples. Sometime, we will change gifts in a party.
Omisoka is New Year's Eve. People eat buckwheat noodles specially prepared for the occasion and stay up till midnight to listen to the 108 chimes of a nearby temple bell.
Seibo is a year-end gift which we give to our superiors, customers, and teachers to express appreciation for the special services they have extended to us. The gifts are apt to be more expensive than mid-year gifts.
Shogatsu is the celebration of the New Year and is the most important holiday in Japan, comparable to Christmas in Western countries. Entrances of houses and buildings are decorated with a set of pine branches and bamboo. A sweet sake called toso, and a soup called zoni are served during the holiday.
Seijin-no-hi, celebrated on the second Monday of January, is Coming-of-Age Day. This day is dedicated to the nation's young people who reached the legal age of twenty during the past year. Family and friends help celebrate the young people's new independence.
Setsubun is the day before the first day of spring according to the lunar calendar, usually February 2 or 3. Bean throwing ceremonies are held in homes, shrines, and temples in the belief that this will bring in good fortune and drive away evil spirits.
Kenkokukinen-no-hi, or National Foundation Day, is a patriotic holiday celebrated on February 11. According to Japanese mythology, the legendary first emperor Jinmu ascended the throne on this day in the year 660 B.C. The present emperor of Japan traces his lineage back to Jinmu.

Hina-matsuri is the Doll's Festival or Girls' Festival observed on March 3. Dolls dressed in beautiful Heian-era costumes and representing the Emperor, Empress, and their court are displayed to celebrate the growth of the family's girls and to express their hopes that they will become as graceful and beautiful as the Heian nobility.

Midori-no-hi, or Green Day, is April 29. Until 1988 it was observed as Emperor Showa's birthday. The name was chosen to commemorate Emperor Showa who was an expert in the fields of biology and botany and was interested in preserving the environment.
Kenpo-kinenbi, or Constitution Day, is on May 3. This holiday marks the enactment of the present Constitution of Japan after World War II.
Kodomo-no-hi, or Children's Day, is celebrated on May 5. The day was traditionally celebrated as the Boys' Festival (tango-no-sekku) until immediately after World War II. Although the tradition of celebrating tango-no-sekku still remains, it is now regarded as a holiday for wishing all children, boys and girls alike, happiness and prosperity. Tango-no-sekku is the Boys' Festival observed on May 5 to celebrate the healthy growth of boys. Warrior dolls and miniature suits of armor are displayed inside the home and carpshaped streamers called koinobori are flown outside.
"Golden Week" is a holiday-studded week including Green Day, Constitution Day, and Children's Day, on April 29, May 3 and 5, respectively. Since this is also an ideal tourist season, millions of holiday-makers travel extensively at home and abroad.

Umi-no-hi, or Marine Day, is observed on July 20. It promotes awareness of the benefits of the sea, and celebrates the nation's maritime prosperity.
