President's Message
Carroll Lefebvre
Greetings! Here we are again, preparing for another great community theatre experience, Mainstage 2004. All ten zones are gearing up for their festivals and some are at the starting gate as we speak! It's been an interesting but quiet time over the last few months, but that was probably the "calm before the storm"! It certainly isn't calm anymore in Theatre BC land. Although I shouldn't refer to the zone festivals as the "storm". It's just a saying! I'm certainly looking forward to returning to the City of Kamloops for Mainstage 2004. We had a wonderful time there in 2001 and I'm sure this festival will be even bigger and better, thanks to Lenore Mitchell and her Festival Committee. They've been working on this for over a year already to ensure that each one of us has the best time ever. So, make sure you read this issue very carefully and plan your Mainstage week and get those registrations in as soon as possible. You don't want to miss out on anything! I had the opportunity of attending the New Play Festival again this Spring in Kamloops (I should buy real estate there) and, once again, it was a very enjoyable and educational experience. This year I had the opportunity of acting in the Full-length winning play, The Kitchen Sink Trauma by Sara O'Leary. It's been a while since I've been in a comedy and I had a blast. If you haven't been to this event, I would highly recommend it to everyone. The weekend was full of education, laughs and work! I, personally, thoroughly enjoyed working with Janet Michael and the other actors cast in this hilarious play. In two days I'll be heading to Ft. St. John for the PRZ Festival. This is the last zone I haven't had the opportunity of visiting so after this week, I'll have been to all ten zones' festivals. I have been made welcome and received with warmth and friendship and I thank all of you very much for allowing me to be a part of your event. Next week I head for St. Louis, Missouri. No...for once, not a TheatreBC event. This time it's a wedding and hopefully some "down-time" before heading to Kamloops. I hope I'll see you at Mainstage 2004. If you're a seasoned attendee then you know how wonderful the week can be; if you've never been to a TheatreBC Mainstage, you're in for one of the best theatre experiences of your life! But you had better hurry...the rooms are filling up quickly! All the best...

Bulletins
Canadians Spend More on Live Cultural Events than Live Sporting Events!
A new report on performing arts spending in Canada by Hill Strategies Research shows that Canadians spent a total of $824 million on live performing arts in 2001, nearly double the spending on live sporting events ($451 million). For the 36% of Canadian households (or 4.2 million households) that spent some money on live performing arts, average spending was $195 per household. Not all households spent an equal amount, however: Households that spent $240 or more on live performing arts in 2001 accounted for 60% of all performing arts spending (or nearly $500 million). The full report highlights some demographic characteristics of the highest-spending households. The full report, funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Ontario Arts Council, is currently available free of charge at Hill Strategies’ website www.hillstrategies.com/resources.html and will be available shortly at the websites of the funding organizations www.culturescope.ca, www.canadacouncil.ca/publications_e/research/ default.htm and www.arts.on.ca). The report, the sixth in a series of statistical publications on the arts by Hill Strategies Research, is based on the 2001 Survey of Household Spending, a Statistics Canada survey of 16,901 Canadian households. Hill Strategies Research, publisher of the Arts Research Monitor, is a Hamilton-based arts research company. Please visit www.hillstrategies.com for more information.
Most recently, Summerland Singers & Players was named as a recipient of one of the Assembly of BC Arts Council’s 25th Anniversary Honour in the Arts Awards. The goal of the Award is to recognize those individuals and organizations throughout the province who have made a significant contribution to the support of arts and culture at the community level and whose achievements reflect an outstanding commitment to the role of arts and culture in building and strengthening community. The winners were announced in Victoria at the Assembly’s Annual Conference, as part of Arts and Culture Week in BC. For the many successes that the Summerland Singers & Players have had, they were nominated by Gail Thomas, Treasurer of the Summerland Community Arts Council. Congratulations, SSP!

New Promotional Opportunity For Playwrights at Theatre BC's Mainstage 2004 in Kamloops!
Playwrights Given Opportunity to Showcase As part of a Job Creation Project through Human Resources & Skills Development Canada, granted to Theatre BC for this year's MAINSTAGE provincial theatre festival in Kamloops, July 2-10, 2004, Theatre BC will be offering an opportunity to playwrights who have entered the Canadian National Playwriting Competition to showcase their new plays. A free admission, fringe-style lunchtime "Readers Theatre" component will be included as part of the event curriculum. Playwrights are invited to submit their scripts to the selection committee for consideration. Up to 20 plays will be chosen to participate. Each will receive two readings over three days, during the nine-day event. Playwrights are encouraged to bring their own readers to ensure that the plays are prepared to their satisfaction. A pool of registrant readers may also be available to draw from. All participants will be expected to register for Mainstage for the three-day minimum package, like all other delegates, giving them access to all activities during their stay at Mainstage 2004. This, of course, includes evening and matinee competitive Mainstage performances, Workshop Plays, morning Coffee Critiques and evening Green Room Socials. Registration Rates for 3-day packages are $70 members, $100 non-members, plus gst. The Readers Theatre will be offered in at least two downtown venues, with each entry receiving two performances on two different days (scheduled no more than two days apart so that playwrights and readers qualify for the three-day minimum registration package, like all other participant delegates). The Readers Theatre presentations will be free admission and scheduled in the mid-day timeframe to provide "lunchbox theatre" and late afternoon for “pre-dinner theatre” for the visiting delegates & general public. With theatre enthusiasts in town from every region of the province, this will be a great opportunity to promote new plays. The goal is to provide a new opportunity to promote new Canadian plays, particularly those by playwrights who have supported the Canadian National Playwriting Competition. The proposal is supported both by Human Resources & Skills Development Canada, in the form of the Job Creation Project granted to Mainstage 2004 to assist with administration and development of the program, and the City of Kamloops, a major sponsor for Theatre BC's New Play Festival and Mainstage 2004. Invitations will be sent to all playwrights who have previously entered Theatre BC's Canadian National Playwriting Competition (whom we have current contact info for). Anyone wishing further information, should contact Executive Director Robb Mowbray at the Theatre BC office or the Mainstage 2004 office in Kamloops. S.G. LEE - BUT AM I FUNNY? ACTING FOR COMEDY Monday, July 5th pm & Tuesday, July 6th am
When does a brilliant comic moment turn into Coarse Acting 101? How can I find the truth in my work while shaping it for maximum comic impact? Why is comedy so darn difficult? Actors will work with scenes from well-known Canadian, American & British comedies in an exploration of the highs & lows of comic acting. (Play titles will be sent to actors. Actors are asked to read all 3 plays before the workshop.) Bio: S.G. Lee is an Artistic Director of Vancouver's Silk Purse Productions, where she has directed comedy hits ranging from Thomas Middleton's Jacobean farce, A Chaste Maid in Cheapside, to Theresa Rebeck's contemporary American retelling of Pygmalion, Spike Heels. She is also Artistic Producer at the William Davis Centre for Actors' Study, where she teaches scene study, acting for comedy and improvisation, as well as directing students in their graduating productions. Lee is know to audiences around BC and the Y ukon as the writer of book and lyrics for the hilarious musical, Larger Than Life, produced and toured by Western Canada Theatre.

Bio: After her formal education from University of BC and the Banff School of Fine Arts studying acting, speech and movement, and achieving a degree in Education (UBC), Danielle was involved with Tom Kerr and the founding of the Western Canada Theatre Company. Danielle served as Artistic Director for two companies: Shuswap Summer Theatre (1989-1996) and WaterMark Theater (1993-1998). Since moving to Kamloops, Danielle had been featured in five films: The Prospector, Cold War, The Dream, An Unfinished Life (2003), Riding the Bullet (2003). In March, Danielle was cast in Western Canada Theatre's production of Norm Foster's Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun. FRAN GEBHARD - A DIRECTOR PREPARES
Thursday, July 8th pm
What must a director accomplish before rehearsals begin? Organizing the text into units, communicating with the design team, mining the text, the director’s concept, scheduling, tackling the scene changes, utilizing the stage management team….Fran will cover it all.
FRAN GEBHARD - HOW TO GET THE BEST FROM THE ACTING COMPANY Friday, July 9th am
The director/actor relationship is crucial to the success of the production. Participants will have an opportunity to work with actors on a scene and monologue. They will learn how to become an actor’s director and translate “act better” into language actors can use. Bio: Fran is currently an acting and directing instructor at UVic. She has adjudicated several zone festivals and served as a dramaturge and juror for TBC’s playwriting competition. Fran has been a professional actor for 30 years and has been directing for 10. She has her MFA in directing from UBC.
JIM HERCHAK - PLANNING YOUR REHEARSALS
Saturday, July 10th am
Muddled or nonexistent planning quickly turns rehearsals into a mad, last minute scramble which leaves many parts of the play lacking and scares away actors from the next audition. Unplanned rehearsals are frustrating, inefficient, unproductive and disrespectful of the actors' time. Planned rehearsals, on the other hand, lets actors get into their groove. Learn how to break down a script into workable units, and learn not only why scheduling results in a cleaner, tighter production, but also how it frees up time to discover the gems within every script and make it the best it can be. The class will also include some tips on planning your auditions. Bio: Jim is a playwright, as well as a director and actor, and has been president of the Kamloops Players from 2001 to 2004. His latest credits include directing his 1997 play The Colour of Blood for the 2003 OK Zone Festival, and Murder Clause and Announcing Murder: two murder mystery shows for private conventions, also penned by Jim.
JACI METIVIER - THE ACTING BODY
Saturday, July 10th am
The best actors have a strong physical presence. This class will look at ways to develop ease and poise on stage, whether you want to simply navigate a set gracefully, or dance a pavanne. We'll first look at the role that alignment, breath and awareness have in finding physical neutral. We'll cover some technical tricks and exercises that will help you move confidently on stage and expand your range of physical choices.
JACI METIVIER - READY TO GO - HOW TO PREPARE YOURSELF (OR YOUR ACTORS) TO SHINE ON STAGE Saturday, July 10th pm
Do you ever feel unprepared when a show starts, like you haven't quite arrived? Do you deal with terrible nerves before a show? By spending time before each performance focussing on readying your body, voice, and mind, you can decrease the toll that nerves take and increase your ability to be fully present on stage. We'll work with techniques and exercises that enliven, focus and relax you - and let you have more fun on stage. Solo and group warmups will be covered. Class also appropriate for directors and teachers. Bio: Jaci caught the acting bug when she was 13 years old. She started out in community theatre in Ottawa and years later found herself working in dance in Vancouver. After moving to the Shuswap in 1998, she returned to acting, and in 2002, won the 0kanagan Zone award for Best Actress for her role as Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing. This year, she wrote and directed a two-woman dance drama about the life of Calamity Jane. Jaci has taught movement to theatre students, seniors, youth, and community members, and is a passionate believer in the expressive power of the body.

Backstage Conference 2004
Theatre BC’s weekend of theatrical workshops and the Annual General Meeting will be returning to the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Richmond next season. The annual conference will be held November 12-14, 2004. All activities will be held at the Ramada Plaza, with complimentary shuttle service between the hotel and Vancouver Airport. Last year’s inaugural event in Richmond had a “mini-Mainstage” feel, with lots of opportunity for registrants to meet, mingle and share in the community spirit. Included in the weekend will be the announcement of the winners, finalists and jurors for Theatre BC’s 16th Annual Canadian National Playwriting Competition, which will take place at the Opening Reception on Friday evening. The very successful Saturday evening banquet and entertainment (which featured Rock, Paper, Scissors Comedy Troupe of Vancouver last Fall) will again be part of the event activities. Plans for the curriculum of workshops for the weekend are in the works at this time. If you have any workshop topics that you would like the Host Committee to consider, please send your ideas, recommendations to Backstage Conference Chair, John Stuart, or the Theatre BC office as soon as possible. Individual reservations at the Ramada Plaza Hotel can be made by calling the Central Reservations Office at 1-866-482-8444. Callers must mention the group name Theatre B.C.-Backstage AGM Conference to ensure they receive the appropriate rate and are included in the guest room block. Join Us for the Community Theatre Event of the Y ear!... ...in Kamloops, the Tournament Capital of Canada, July 2-10, 2004! Join us for a great weekend, November 12-14, at Backstage Conference 2004. New Play Festival in Kamloops Enjoys Great Weekend!
New Play Festival participants enjoyed a great weekend in Kamloops at the beginning of April, both indoors and outdoors. The weather was unbelievable, with summer-like temperatures under bright sunshine, just the ticket for those visiting from eastern Canada. Indoors, participants were presented an exciting line-up of new Canadian plays, featuring the winning and finalist scripts from Theatre BC’s 15th Annual Canadian National Playwriting Competition. The New Play Festival provides an opportunity for all of us to give something back to the playwrights, whose work is mostly done in isolation, at writing pads and keyboards far from the theatres where they hope their work is destined. It is a chance to connect with the writers and read their plays out loud, giving them some feedback for consideration in the continued development of their respective works. Without our playwrights, we would stand on the stage with nothing to say. Events like Theatre BC’s New Play Festival allow us to say thank you and show our appreciation. 2nd Annual Canada West Play Fest, October 14-17, 2004
E.A. Rawlinson Centre for the Arts, Prince Albert, SK
Theatre BC is seeking applications from Theatre BC member clubs for the second annual Canada West PlayFest. This event was inaugurated as a joint venture of Theatre BC and Theatre Saskatchewan. We are very pleased to announce that Theatre Alberta will be joining us this year and will send an entry to the Canada West Play Fest. Our goal is to enhance the already positive direction of the Canadian National Playwrighting Competition and the New Play Festival Project by showcasing new Canadian plays and encouraging the development and production of Canadian plays and support for Canadian playwrights. In 2003, Nanaimo hosted this event. This year PlayFest 2004 shifts to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Theatre BC will, through a selection process based on our mandate and the aims of the Canada West Play Fest, choose one group from the applicants to travel to the event in Prince Albert to showcase their play as part of the inter-provincial festival. Theatre BC's representative production will perform on Saturday, October 16th, as the final performance of the Festival. All applications will be considered and one play (or possibly two One Acts), which most closely matches the criteria will be invited to participate. An invited play may be a new or remounted production. The selection criteria, in order of priority are: 1. A play that has been a winner or finalist at a Theatre BC New Play Festival through the Canadian National Playwrighting Competition and/or… 2. A Canadian play and/or… 3. A play that has been performed at either a Theatre BC Zone Festival or Mainstage and/or… 4. A Canadian script that has or is scheduled to be produced by a Theatre BC member club. Note: the nature of the set will be a consideration, in terms of ease of travel / costs to transport. Theatre BC will help to subsidize the travel/registration costs of our entry to a maximum of $1,000, including the $750 Registration Fee (covering up to 15 participants). The entry will be required to forward a refundable entry fee of $100. * The deadline for applications is June21, 2004. The winning selection will be announced as part of the Final Night Awards Ceremony at Mainstage 2004 in Kamloops. All applicants will be advised of the results of the selection process by July 12th. * Prospective applicants are encouraged to view the Theatre BC website for a list of previous New Play Festival winners and finalists (see www.theatrebc.org/playcomp/pwc_win.html). * Theatre BC will ensure a tech package for the E.A. Rawlinson Centre in Prince Albert is available.

ScriptFair Offers Reading Roles at Mainstage 2004...so what is Readers Theatre...
Theatre BC is offering a new component at Mainstage this year. “ScriptFair” will provide an opportunity to hear some new plays, presented as free “Readers Theatre”. Each play will be offered two public readings over three days. All participants (playwrights, readers) are expected to register for the three-day minimum package, like any other Mainstage participant. Playwights may offer to bring their own readers or draw from a pool of Mainstage Registrant readers. The reading sessions will be scheduled for 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm and 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm each day, to run between other activities as free lunchtime or pre-dinner public entertainment. If you are planning to attend Mainstage 2004 in Kamloops, July 2-10, and would like to be considered for any ScriptFair roles, please mark the appropriate checkbox on the Mainstage 2004 Registration form, just above section A (see page 12). The following was recently submitted by Theatre BC members Donna Lynch of Penticton & Eleanor Walker of Okanagan Falls. The information is intended for potential participants in the BC Seniors Games One Act Plays section, but does relate directly to Theatre BC activities, as it relates to both Theatre BC’s New Play Festival and now ScriptFair at Mainstage 2004. GUEST ARTICLE - READERS THEATRE "There has been a gradual decline in participation in (Seniors Games) One-Act Plays in recent years, much of which can be attributed to some forms of physical limitations being experienced by Seniors who were previously active in live theatre. Unfortunately, many of these individuals feel that they are unable to compete with those that have capacity for active stage performance. There is a little-noticed provision in the BC Seniors Games Society Rules and Regulations that provides "Readers Theatre participants may enter but must compete with all other entries". While One Act Plays is an optional sport for the Games, the 2004 Games in Penticton has been approved to conduct this sport. Readers Theatre provides an excellent vehicle for participation by those who feel no longer able to perform actively on stage. We have attached some guidelines for information of any members of your community who might like to participate in this aspect of the Seniors Games. If we can generate sufficient interest in this, we may be able to address a change of rules at the next AGM for next year's Games to have Readers Theatre adjudicated separately from the stage performances. We would appreciate your input” GENERAL INFO FOR READERS THEATRE PARTICIPANTS : BC SENIORS’ GAMES. Reader's Theatre is a dramatic presentation of all types of literature. These can include poetry, letters, short stories, novels, diaries, scripts, news articles. Presenters should strive to a creative oral presentation of literature. The readers should create pictures for the audience without the use of scenery, props, costumes or make-up by using their voices, expressions and their chosen text. Although it is usual for the presenters to have their script, this does not to imply that this is a sight reading exercise. Most performers will have their material very well rehearsed, if not necessarily memorized. In fact, a readers' theatre presentation will take as much rehearsal time as a play. There must be interaction present between the characters, as opposed to an expository reading by a number of people in some kind of rotation. The stage/performance space is bare, except for the use of stools, chairs, boxes, cushions, lecterns, etc. at the director's discretion. These are not to be arranged as a "set", but rather as a means of varying focus areas, heights, levels, and as places to sit, move, stand. They can be arranged to group characters, separate them, add to their importance, or diminish their importance. Costuming is usually minimal, and should reflect the character. However, it is also accepted that "come as you will" is appropriate, or a more formal dress. This should be a choice made by the director. This is a very brief summary to serve as a mini-guide for those who are new to Readers' Theatre. The following reference is the one I used to obtain this information, and it might prove helpful: Mel White's Readers Theatre Anthology. Meriwether Publishing Ltd., Colorado Springs, Colorado. ISBN 0-916260-86-0. Information is also available on the internet. Good luck to all the participants. Eleanor Walker, Chair, One Act Plays.

Eric Hamber Memorial Award Nomination Form
Long Term Contribution To Community Theatre in BC
Theatre BC's most prestigious award is presented on an annual basis, if merited, as a part of the provincial MAINSTAGE Festival Awards Ceremony. The Eric Hamber Award is given to a person, group or institution having made an outstanding contribution to community theatre in British Columbia over a long period. Nominations are reviewed prior to the MAINSTAGE Festival by the Hamber Committee, chaired by Theatre BC's Vice-President (Membership and Communications) and comprised of three past Hamber Award recipients or representatives on behalf of a group or institution. Once a selection has been made, a person close to the recipient is informed and arrangements for presentation at the MAINSTAGE Festival are made. How to Nominate: To nominate a candidate for this award, print and complete the form below. The form should be supplemented by letters of reference and/or documentation supporting reasons why the candidate should receive this award. The Hamber Committee will use only submitted information to make their selection. The Committee maintains the right to withhold the award should an eligible nominee not, in their opinion, be forthcoming. However, nominations from the past two years may then be re-opened for consideration. You may, therefore, renew your nomination for a person, group or institution you have previously submitted by completing and returning the form below.
