“Produced by Europeans for a WORLDWIDE READERSHIP”

Haras de la Huderie-based Sagacity became the first of this year’s crop of first season sires to get off the mark yesterday. His two-year-old daughter Saga Flower battled home in heavy going at MaisonsLaffitte to win a hotly contested conditions race over four and a half furlongs. The filly was bred by Olivier and Marcel Bloyet and is out of the winning Welkin mare Pat’s Flower. She was bought for €6,000 at the Agence Francaise Deauville October Yearling Sale by Searching Sarl. Owned and bred by the late Jean-Luc Lagardere, Sagacity (Highest Honor) won the Gr.1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud and was third in the Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, a race won by his half-brother Sagamix (Linamix), whilst their sibling Sage Et Jolie won the Gr.2 Prix de Malleret. Sagacity’s fee for 2006 is €2,500 and he has already attracted a book of 90 mares this season.

Auktion. He is a half-brother to Olaya (Acatenango; dam of the Gr.2 winners Olaso and Ocasa). His dam Ocotal (Vitiges) was a Listed winning daughter of the German 1,000 Guineas winner Ocana (Le Haar). During his racing career where he won three races, including a Listed race in addition to his Derby victory, he was owned by Newsells Park Stud, who hope to support him with 14 top-class mares this season. He stands at Gestut Rietberg at a fee of €3,000.

Two choicely-bred mares owned by Lady Bamford are among the nineteen scanned in foal to first season sire Oratorio. The first of the pair is the maiden Highindi (Montjeu), from the family of Compton Admiral and Summoner, whose Gr.2-winning half-sister Arvada sold for $800,000 to Shadai Farm at Keeneland in November. The other is 380,000gns yearling purchase Pilgrim Spirit (Saint Ballado) out of the Mr Prospector mare Oshima. Among the others tested in foal to Oratorio are Gr.3 Prix de Cabourg winner Harbour Island and Gr.3 winner Eyeq along with James Hanley’s maiden Casa Esperanza, an unraced half-sister to G.1 Beverly D Stakes winner Snow Polina.

Gr.1 Derby Italiano winner Osorio has had the first mare that he covered successfully scanned in foal. She is the Gr.2 Canadian Handicap winner Skytrial, an eleven-year-old daughter of Sky Classic, who comes from the family of the Champion racemare and Gr.1 Irish Oaks winner Swiftfoot (Run The Gantlet). Bred by Gestut Fahrhof, the son of Surumu was retained for DM26,000 at the 2001 BBAG Jahrlings

The series continues with Coolmore’s 2,000 Guineas and Gr.1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Golan, who is featured on pages 2-4 & 10-11. Further sires will appear in future issues.

The first Italian breeze-up sale takes place today at Pisa racecourse. After the latest withdrawals, 77 of the 91 lots catalogued will be sold this afternoon and the SGA has high expectations for this “premiere”. “We are entering new territory. Italian trainers are used to buying horses in the breeze-ups all over Europe, at cheap prices, but this sale is completely different. We are hopeful about this sale and its future.” said Arturo Brambilla, vice president of SGA. Some of the most influential trainers in Italy will consign horses, such as Bruno Grizzetti who has no less than 13 lots for sale. “I’m a big supporter of the breezeup sale. A trainer can make a good profit and keeps his business going during the winter, when the racing is less important in Italy. If I sell ten of my juveniles with a profit of €5,000 each, I’ll earn more than winning a Group race! By the way, I’ll also play two positions, as both vendor and purchaser.” said Grizzetti. The Irish pinhooker Con Marnane will sell six lots, under the banner of Bansha House Stables. Four of them were bought at the SGA Selected Sale for a total of €38,000. The 77 juveniles will breeze in the morning at 9.30am and the sale will start at 2pm (local time). The breezeup will be show, on line at the website of Pisa racetrack: EYECATCHERS Lot 17 b c by Xaar out of Kauris (Acatenango), from Azienda Agricola La Vigna. The second foal out of a

b.c ex Alpine Symphony (Northern Dancer) Bred by Barronstown Stud and Orpendale €55,000 Goffs Million Yearling Sale by BBA (Ireland)

This March-foaled bay is a son of the unraced Northern Dancer mare Alpine Symphony, whose 12 previous foals have yielded three winners headed by the Gr.3 Chester Vase victor High Baroque (High Estate). The second dam, Aliceva (Alcide), bred eight winners including the Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Nikoli, the Gr.2 winners Captain James and Sutton Place (dam of a Gr.3 winner) and the Gr.3 victor Good as Diamonds. The third dam, the 1951-foaled Feevagh (Solar Slipper), won the Yorkshire Oaks and is the grandam of Levmoss, Le Moss and Sweet Mimosa. the race. This horse has been in Germany with Russianborn trainer Wilhelm Giedt over the winter and has had two starts on the sand. Though running over a half a furlong shorter trip, this has resulted in two victories, so he may be interesting on the turf as well.

Healthy competition from buyers on the second day of the 2006 William Inglis March Thoroughbred Sale at Oaklands yesterday helped achieve an excellent clearance rate of 92% and a new record aggregate of A$2,004,100 for a total of 330 lots sold. The mare category provided the sale with its top lot of A$90,000 on Thursday for the mare New Groove (Perugino), offered on account of Three Bridges Thoroughbreds. The filly and mare racehorse category again proved very popular with bidders on day two resulting in Lot 234 Croisette (Canny Lad) out of Cheval Place going under the hammer to Belmont Bloodstock Agency of Victoria for A$55,000. Her half-sister Lot 239, Fine Arts (Quest for Fame) achieved A$26,000. Another dual purpose offering Lot 289, Run The Wind achieved A$31,000. “An all round extremely pleasing result” said Inglis Director, Peter Heagney. “The horses were very well presented and the buyers provided enthusiastic bidding which created a positive atmosphere in the ring in all categories. Additionally the small offering of yearlings at this sale met with strong bidding which augers well for our forthcoming Autumn Yearling Sale on 3rd and 4th April where 451 lots will go under the hammer.” RACING PREVIEW

Winter refuses to leave Germany so the turf races at Cologne on Sunday have been cancelled, though the Listed race, the Grand Prix Aufgalopp 2006 over 12 furlongs, has been transferred to the turf at Neuss, so the “Black Type” season will still get underway. There will be seven horses in the race and Grantley (Deploy) is in the line up. After an impressive performance in the Listed Neusser Sandbahn Grand Prix, he was last in the Gr.3 Winter Derby at Lingfield Park and he may also find this distance a bit far. Gandolfino (Alwuhush) will have plenty of fans and he will enjoy the extra five furlongs. He was second last time out to Grantley. South African Racing and Bloodstock News

In the Listed R125,000 Drum Star Handicap over nine furlongs at Turffontein last Saturday, rank outsider The Badger from the all conquering Charles Laird stable, made full use of his recent drop in the merit rating and charged through from last to win by a neck. The rain stayed away but there was still cut in the ground and this probably effected the chances of Fork Lightening (Rambo Dancer), who finished unplaced. The gelding, Zamburak, now a very cheap looking R50,000 National Yearling Sales purchase by Model Man out of a Dancing Champ mare, is still improving as, despite being raised six points for a win and a second in his last two starts, he ran a fine race and finished fastest of all to claim second ahead of the game and ever consistent seven-year-old, Cup of Grace (Royal Chalice). The favourite, Pavlovich (Soviet Star), from the Geoff Woodruff stable could only manage fourth. The Badger is by Badger Land out of the Wicked Will mare, Fast Faith, was bred by T D Andrews and is owned by Messrs Marcus Jooste and W D Jackson. He was a R30,000 purchase and has now taken his earnings up to R833,310. This was Charles Laird’s sixth feature race win this month. There is night racing at Newmarket racecourse on Saturday, programmed to co-incide with the Dubai World Cup meeting. The Gr.2 Senor Santa Handicap (MR) over six furlongs has attracted a competitive field of sixteen runners with four horses under sufferance. Top weight Nhlavini, the evergreen and versatile Charles Laird-trained National Emblem eight-year-old gelding, ran below his best in the seven furlong Hawaii Stakes at Turffontein on his last start, but before that won two feature races over six and five furlongs

respectively at Kenilworth. In his last start over this course and distance, he finished three parts of a length behind the four-year-old gelding, Vega (Jallad), and now meets that one on four pounds better terms. The three-year-old colt, Let’s Rock’n Roll (Muhtafal), touched off Vega over five furlongs in the soft at this course in early February to register his third win in succession but Vega now has a three pound pull in the weights. Of the others, the four-year-old Stirling Bridge (Western Winter) needs to improve but is capable and the three-year-old colt, Tiza (Goldkeeper), was near the top of his year as a twoyear-old. JUVENILE WINNERS OF THE WEEK It is no secret that the Neil Bruss-trained juvenile colt, Buscador, who made his debut at Scottsville on Sunday, is highly-regarded. This Ambiance Stud-bred Western Winter colt out of the Del Sarto mare, Bacio, was knocked down to Bloodstock Agent, Robin Bruss, acting on behalf of Australian interests for R700,000 at last year’s Bloodstock South Africa’s National Yearling Sales and certainly looked the part, but on the day he had to settle for second as he was worn down late by the Muhtafal colt, Infinite Spirit, trained by Mike Miller. Infinite Spirit is out of the Fort Wood mare Miss Rosewood and was bred by Kwa-Zulu Natal-based Avalon Stud and, encouragingly, the field finished fairly strung out behind him. Sheikh Hamdam Al Maktoum’s South African-based sires enjoyed a winning run this week and Albarahin (Silver Hawk) recorded his first juvenile winner when the Cyril Naidoo-trained, Mystic, ran out a comfortable winner at the Vaal racecourse yesterday. Heavy rain forced the turf races to be switched to the dirt surface, but this did not stop the chesnut colt from striding away from his field to win by five lengths. Mystic was a R90,000 purchase from Summerhill Stud’s “Born To

Run” draft at last year’s Bloodstock South Africa Ready To Run Sale and looks to have inherited at least some of his Gr.1 winning half-brother’s Disappear (Muhtalfal), ability. MAIDEN WINNER OF THE WEEK Trainer, Alec Laird’s three-year-old colt, The Seals, was backed into long odds-on for his debut at Turffontein racecourse on Saturday over five furlongs. He missed the break and still had plenty of ground to make up in the final two furlongs. However, the Graeme Beckowned and bred colt showed a fine turn of foot and mowed them all down, winning comfortably by a length and three quarters with the third a further three and a quarter lengths back. The pedigree of The Seals is stamped with class and speed. He is by top sire and sire of sires, National Assembly, whilst his dam, Heat Seal, is by Harry Hotspur out of a Royal Prerogative mare. Royal Prerogative was a former Champion Sire whilst Harry Hotspur was a most successful sire by one of the most influential sprinting sires to ever land in South Africa, the top sire and sire of sires, Mexico II. Mexico II was a top-class five furlong sprinter in England and was by a son of one of Europe’s fastest ever horses, Gold Bridge, out of a mare by the famous sprinter miler, Tudor Minstrel. The Seals looks to have an exciting career ahead of him. INDUSTRY NEWS The first horseracing convention in two decades has resolved to develop a blueprint to map out the future of racing in South Africa. This crucial decision was taken shortly before the curtain came down on the Racing South Africa National Convention held over two days at the Emperors Palace Convention Centre in Johannesburg. The convention was the first of its kind in over twenty years and held tremendous significance in terms of providing the various industry role players with an opportunity to exchange views, encourage debate and with a view to formulating a path forward to plot its’ future. The general consensus of those present was that the convention had been an unqualified success and calls went out for it to henceforth become a regular feature on the racing calendar. In his closing address, Master of Ceremonies, Mike Meehan drew attention to the wonderful spirit of cooperation that was prevalent amongst all the industry participants. The convention resolved: Resolution 1: Racing SA is commended for convening this convention and is urged to build on the benefits derived by reconvening the participants on a regular but economical basis. Resolution 2: Racing SA should convene within the next six months for a strategic planning conference of the industry players to develop a blueprint which maps out the future for racing in South Africa with particular emphasis on:– q the optimum number of owners, horses, races, tracks, training facilities etc that the industry requires

Summerhill Stud’s Gr.2 Prix Dollar and multiple Listed winner Albarahin (Silver Hawk), who celebrated his first juvenile winner at Vaal this week.

q the appropriate remuneration or reward that each party should receive q the setting of objectives to achieve the above q the establishment of an agreed plan of implementation Peter Gibson, CEO of Racing SA said that the contribution made by the Speakers reflected the energy and enthusiasm for the Convention. He said it had to be regarded as a great success and that the process that followed would confirm the desire for meaningful investigation and possible future change. Michel Nairac, CEO of Gold Circle said that he was thoroughly pleased with the excellent turnout of 142 delegates and particularly the diversity and calibre of those who had attended. He said it could largely be summarized as two very productive days and time well spent and he looked forward to horseracing benefiting materially in the short term and felt that the future held some exciting prospects for the sport, both nationally and internationally. Graeme Hawkins, Racing Executive of Phumelela Gaming and Leisure said that the positive outcome and excellent spirit which had prevailed had shown that the convention had been long overdue and that they were looking forward to tackling some of the many very relevant issues raised in a constructive and meaningful fashion. A detailed summary of the various topics discussed will be forwarded in due course to every Delegate and will also be available on the Racing SA website, David Thiselton For archive articles, see or for further information contact: Peter Gibson CEO RACING SOUTH AFRICA Email:
