Background The 'Timeline Constructor' is based on an Excel template as well as Visual Basic code. It can draw up timelines of varying proportions and date ranges incorporating personalities or events, categorised by colour cod Both AH and CE years may be specified in the 'Settings' Only AH years may be used in 'Birth' and 'Death' date columns in 'Data' worksheet However, you can use the following formulas to convert to AH from CE AH = 1.030684*(CE-621.5643) rounded with the INT() function Step by Step The Timeline Constructor comes with a sample data list of names and birth/death and other data Click on 'Data' tab to view the sample data It is also set up with default settings for the various parameters that can be specified Click on 'Settings' tab to review the settings Now press the 'Generate Timeline' button and watch as the data items are inserted in the correct places on the grid Information from the 'Other Information' column in 'Data' is inserted as a note. Hover over an entry with the mouse and see the pop up note. The Grid button toggles the grid on 'Timeline' sheet To enter your own data, delete or overwrite the sample entries (though leave the headings intact) on 'Data' You are free to choose different, or no, colours for category You are free to specify any font, size and colour for 'Name' Choose the appropriate View magnitude from the toolbar
Ideas You can freely change the data for any group of individuals as well as events, some possibilities include: Chronology of wars in Islam Muslim Caliphs and Kings juxtaposed with Imams [a] Et cetera, et cetera. Allow for unknown birth dates by using an average age such as 75 This is a spreadsheet, feel free to use formulas in the 'Data' worksheet Use different fonts, sizes, and colours in 'Data' for the Names Use the 'category' colours imaginatively for meaningful timelines Sort the data items in any order, using standard Excel functionality, before generating timeline Once you create a timeline that you want to keep, you can copy it using standard Excel functionality You can then create a different one while keeping the other perfectly safe Please Note! There is no extensive error checking built in. The timeline generation routine will fail if: Birth Years are later than death years Any birth or death years fall outside the Start and End years in 'Settings' (Ensure you have checked or unchecked the box as appropriate) The number of columns needed exceed around 255 Try increasing the Interval If a name is so long that it overflows its box, try increasing the Column Width parameter or decreasing the Interval years If you see '###' in any column, increase the Column Width parameter in 'Settings'
