EndNote Applications · Organize and search citations and abstracts from any type of document (books, articles, etc.) · Import references directly from most eresources · Connect directly to many university and other library catalogs · Store text up to 64K (includes full text) · Manually create or edit any records · Work directly with Word for importing/creating bibliographies Where to Begin? Creating a New Library · File/New/Name · TIP: Always create a new library or open a previously saved library (File/Open) before starting your research The Basics · Open Main Window = Tools>Show Toolbar>Main · View/Hide Data Fields = Hide Preview/Show Preview (in lower right corner) · Search Endnote = References/Search References or click on Binoculars icon on toolbar · Show All Citations = References/Show All References · Show Selected Citations = Click to highlight citations (or CTRL­Click to highlight multiple citations) then References>Show Selected References (you can also Hide Selected References) · Removing Duplicates = References/Find Duplicates Customizing Brief Display Records · Resorting Citations = Click on Bar above references page or A­Z icon on toolbar · Customizing Display Fields = Edit>Preferences>Display Fields Manually Creating New Records or Editing Records · References>New Reference · Reference Type box = pull down to select document type (journal article, book, thesis, etc.) so that the appropriate data fields will display · To add more than one data line per field (e.g. more than 1 author), type first name, hit enter · Use tab to move to next field · Keywords and Notes field – will take up to 64K · Can use Notes field to add personal notes · Endnote does not care what text you enter here Editing References · Highlight reference · References/Edit References will display complete citation record Saving Data · Automatically saves each time you close a page

Connecting to Catalogs/Databases to Import Citations TIP: Recommended for searching other library catalogs; not recommended for searching databases as it dilutes he power of the search and may negatively impact returned results · Tools>Connect>Connect… · Select Database>Connect · Results o Click Copy All References To button § Use Control button to select; Copy References button will change to reflect number selected o Select library to copy into
