IINDEPENDENCE AVENUE 901 N E NDEPENDENCE AVENUE LEE’’S SUMMIIT,, MO 64086 LEE S SUMM T MO 64086 All proceeds benefit the Lee’s Summit D.A.R.E. Program Dear Community Business, The Lee’s Summit CARES is sponsoring the sixteenth annual Holly Festival this year. The Holly Festival is a fundraising craft show that supports Lee’s Summit’s D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. The program deals with not only the dangers of drugs, but also teaches our children safety skills, how to recognize situations that could pose potential danger, and how to avoid peer pressure temptations. The program also shows them how to resolve a conflicting situation without resorting to violence. The D.A.R.E. program is taught in the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 7th grades in Lee’s Summit. The older the children are the more in depth the lessons become. The Holly Festival began in 1994 and has raised close to $162,000 for the D.A.R.E program in the Lee’s Summit School system. These funds are used to purchase materials used by the D.A.R.E. officers in the education of our children. The money is raised through booth rental fees (close to 80 craft booths), concession stand and bake shop sales, door prize ticket sales and a gift basket auction. The Lee’s Summit Community is very supportive of the Holly Festival. The school district provides the use of Bernard Campbell Middle School and the support staff required to be present during the weekend. Local area businesses donate the majority of the supplies needed to run the Holly Festival yearly. The local businesses are also very generous in giving monetary donations or donating small items (tickets, gift cards, gift baskets, lamps, etc) for our door prize drawings. The bake shop income would not be possible if it were not for the parent and community member support. Many individuals bake items to be donated and sold throughout the weekend. The local PTA’s put together the gift baskets to be auctioned off and help with the organization and running of the festival. This does not include the many community members who volunteer their time to work a 2 hour shift throughout the weekend. The community’s support allows us to give 100% of the proceeds to the D.A.R.E. program. The Holly Festival is truly a community fundraiser and it really shows how dedicated Lee’s Summit is to ensuring the safety and education of our children. As mentioned above a large part of the funds the Holly Festival is able to give to the D.A.R.E. program is due to business donations. Companies and businesses in the community have been very generous over the years in giving monetary donations or donating small items (tickets, gift cards, gift baskets, lamps, etc) for our door prizes drawings. Each company donating is recognized on our donation board with the dollar value they have donated. These boards are displayed prominently for all to see as they walk in the front doors. We are also putting together a brochure this year to be handed out to all of our shoppers. Each contributor will be recognized within this brochure as well. The surrounding communities have come out each year by the thousands to make this a successful event. Over the course of the festival, 6,000 to 8,000 customers will come to shop, eat, win prizes and support a worthy cause, all at the same time. The Holly Festival this year will be held November 14th (10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) and November 15th (10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.) at Bernard Campbell Middle School. We would appreciate any tickets, gift certificates or small items you may be able to donate for the door prize area. Our supporters range from the very young to the mature adult and everyone enjoys purchasing door prize tickets to support the D.A.R.E. program. If you have any items that need to be picked up or any questions please contact Lisa Lambkin at 554-2537. If you are unable to donate items and would like to make a monetary donation that would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to mail any items, please send them to: Lee’s Summit CARES Attn: Holly Festival 901 N.E. Independence Avenue Lee’s Summit, MO 64086 Thank you for making the safety and education of our children your top priority.
